Battle for the Rail #2 New Palestine Dragons (3-0/1-0) at Mt. Vernon Marauders (1-2/1-0) 7:30 p.m., Mt. Vernon Stadium Broadcast: Dragon Radio Supremacy in Hancock County football is again up for grabs as New Palestine sets to do battle with its oldest rival in the annual Battle for the Boundary Rail. This is the 49th regular-season meeting, and 55th all-time, between the programs. The two teams have met annually since both began varsity football in 1968, and have been Hoosier Heritage Conference foes since 1994. The Dragons enter looking to extend a number of records, including tying the rivalry’s mark with their fifth consecutive win in the series. NP has also won an HHC-record 21 straight conference games, and has won 30 straight regular season games, both dating back to 2013. The Dragons enter after a convincing 55-7 victory over Yorktown last week. For the second straight game, NP gained more than 500 yards – tallying 365 on the ground and 155 through the air. Senior RB DuRon Ford tallied his second 200yard, four-touchdown game in three weeks with 240 yards and four scores. He leads the Dragons with 609 rushing yards and 11 TDs in three games. Senior QB Gunnar Large threw for 155 yards and tossed three TDs for the second straight week, hooking up with Brady Walden on an 85-yard screen pass. He also threw TD passes to Colby Jenkins and Brett Luker and ran for 81 yards. The offense is averaging 476 yards and 47 points per game. The Red Rage got in on the act last week, forcing five turnovers, with Josh Glover tallying a fumble recovery and an interception. NP is now plus-6, with 11 takeaways, in three weeks.
Tonight’s foe
The Marauders had a strong game in last week’s 27-10 victory over Greenfield-Central to open conference play with a victory, keyed by the defense and special teams. Alex Barnett had a kickoff return for a score, Logan Scrogham an INT return for a score and Trevor Bond kicked two field goals in the Week 3 victory. MV is led by former Dragon mentor Doug Armstrong. NP is 31-22-1 all-time in the series. The Dragons won last year’s meeting 59-7, the largest win margin in the series’ history.
Looking ahead
Next week, the Dragons travel to Pendleton Heights to face the Arabians. NP returns home Week 6 to meet Greenfield-Central.
Trophy history
The Boundary Rail was introduced in 2005 as a traveling trophy for the series. It is a piece of the interurban track that ran alongside U.S. 40, which runs near the school districts’ border. It was donated and painted half-black, half-red by MV graduate Josh Short. A tradition that has begun is the winner paints the rail in school colors. NP has won 10 of the 11 Boundary Rail matchups.
We love seconds
The Dragons have had a big second quarter in each game this season, with 17 points against Whiteland in the second frame. Against each Richmond and Yorktown, the Dragons had a 28-point second quarter, building leads of 3514 and 42-0. NP has outscored foes 73-19 in the 12 minutes before halftime.

Rail records
The series has a number of storied faces & players. From 1968-82, the game was a regular season tilt, and was the last game of the season from 1968-77. In 198384, it resumed the late-game feel as part of the “cluster system,” and New Palestine won both years to clinch playoff berths. The two teams met in the postseason for the first time in 1990, and have met six times in the playoffs. They were in opposite conferences for the first quarter-century of the rivalry, but since 1994, have both been in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. Kincaid also ran for 39 yards in the game. He was the first player to have an offensive and defensive TD in the same game since Logan Greene against New Castle in 2015. It was also the first two-INT game since Greene in Week 8 2015 vs. New Castle. Kincaid followed with an INT against Yorktown in Week 3, one of four picks in that game.

Success drives 5A move
New Palestine will compete in Class 5A through the 2018 season, due to the IHSAA Tournament Success Factor. The Dragons were successful in their first run through 5A, winning a semistate title and coming within three points of their second straight state title. Due to that run, the Dragons are slated to play in 5A in 2017-18, but will bump up to 6A for the next two years if they return to the State Finals this fall. NPHS competed in 3A from 1985 through 2006, and 4A from 2007-14.

Corey shatters state record
Dragon junior kicker Spencer Corey hit 113-of-114 PATs in the 2015 season, setting a state record for the most consecutive and total PATs hit in a year. He broke the previous records of 71 straight (Fort Wayne Dwenger’s Greg Black, 2010) and 79 total (Hobart’s Spiro Batistatos, 1996). He is 19-20 and has added a 20yard field goal this season. Corey is 14-17 on field goals in his career, and has made some of the biggest kicks in school history. In 2013, he made two field goals – including a 35-yarder – to break a 14-all tie in the Dragons 27-14 regional win at Chatard. In 2014, he kicked the game-winning field goal at the gun to give the Dragons a 30-28 semistate win over Columbus East. Corey is also a member of the Dragons’ soccer team. Meet Coach Ralph
Fourth-year NPHS head coach Kyle Ralph is the fifth head coach in the school’s history, the third to lead the team to an undefeated regular season, the second to lead the Dragons to the State Finals and the first to win a state championship. He came to NPHS in 2013 armed with an attacking style on both sides of the ball, which continues in the team’s commitment to conditioning in the weight room during the offseason, and it has paid off on the field, where the Dragons have won three HHC titles, three sectionals, three regionals, a semistate and the first state championship in school history in his three seasons, and rewritten the school record book in the process. They’ve also had three unbeaten regular seasons and gained 6,000-plus yards of offense each year. He has been named IFCA Region Coach of the Year twice, and was the head coach of the IFCA South All-Stars in 2014. Coach Ralph is a 2002 graduate of Cincinnati St. Xavier High School, where he was a standout lineman. He was a two-time First Team All-ACC lineman at North Carolina, playing for head coach John Bunting. He was the 2005 ACC Coastal Division Offensive Lineman of the Year. He has also participated in NFL training camps with the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers. Prior to coming to New Palestine, Ralph was an assistant coach at St. Xavier, Oak Hills and Withrow High Schools in the Cincinnati area from 2007-12. His New Palestine teams have rewritten the school’s record book, shattering state records for points and total offense in both the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The Dragons hold the top two scoring seasons in Indiana history – 854 points in 2015, 851 in 2014 – and the top total offense season, with 7,701 yards in 2015. Coach Ralph is also the Dragons’ track and field coach, leading NPHS to a county title last spring. He teaches physical education at NPHS. New Palestine’s head coaches Kyle Ralph (2013-) 44-2
