2014 Golden Hurricane Men’s Tennis
UP NEXT: The Golden Hurricane takes a week off before heading to Indian Wells, Calif., for a match against California on Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. LAST TIME OUT: The Golden Hurricane went 1-1 last weekend at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center as Tulsa fell to No. 8 Texas A&M 6-1 on Friday and defeated an undefeated No. 25 Oklahoma State 4-3 on Sunday to give TU head coach Vince Westbrook his 350th career win at Tulsa. Junior Alejandro Espejo’s 7-6 (4), 6-3 win at the No. 3 singles position was the only match that TU won against the Aggies. Espejo paired with senior Japie De Klerk to win the only doubles match for Tulsa at the No. 2 position. The Golden Hurricane bounced back against Oklahoma State winning all three doubles matches. OSU won the next two matches at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles position to take a 2-1 lead, but No. 107 De Klerk’s 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 70 Jakob Sude tied the match at two. Senior Clifford Marsland’s 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 2 singles position gave TU a 3-2 lead and Espejo’s 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 3 singles position clinched the match for Tulsa. WESTBROOK RECORDS HIS 350TH WIN: Tulsa men’s tennis head coach Vince Westbrook, who is in his 23rd season, earned his 350th win at Tulsa after a 4-3 win against an undefeated No. 25 Oklahoma State on Sunday, Feb. 23. His 350 wins is the most wins in school history. MARSLAND ENTERS TOP-10 IN SINGLES WINS: Senior Clifford Marsland picked up a win last weekend giving him 80 career singles wins, which is the ninth most in school history. Marsland needs two wins to move into eight place, which is being held by Gareth Williams, who recorded 81 wins from 1996-99.

Espejo went 2-0 at the No. 3 singles position and 2-0 with senior Japie De Klerk at the No. 2 doubles position. The Granada, Spain native won the only singles match against No. 8 Texas A&M as he defeated No. 25 Jeremy Efferding 7-6 (4), 6-3 and defeated Arjun Kadhe of Oklahoma State 6-4, 6-4.
