First 1,000 Words

TONY WELLINGS – 1,000 WORDS Chapter 2 How Do We Start to plan? If you were one of my clients and I asked you what is the most important consideration financially about retirement the answer you would probably give if you are like my others clients is that you do not want to run out of money! In this chapter I will explain how you should calculate how much money you will need to have a successful retirement. "It’s all about budgeting, we didn’t do it so much when we were working, but now we realise how important it is"- Carol Weston. You now have a limited income, you may have income from various sources. You may have an Occupational Pension, one or more Personal Pensions from different pension companies for different periods of your working life taken out at times when you did not have access to an employer’s scheme. In the UK we have the government’s Old Age Pension. You may also have a graduated pension, State Earnings Related Pension Scheme and possibly the State Second Pension. You may also have income from Buy to Let Properties, perhaps some kind of residual income from a business. You may also have income from the savings you squirreled away over the years in the form of interest payments from your bank or building society. Do you have shares in a public company that pays a dividend income every six months? If you were smart you would have started early, perhaps in your twenties rather than leaving it until later in life. The sum of money and the income that it generates for you will ultimately determine the quality of life you will experience in retirement. Therefore, the first thing we need to do is to work out your expenditure. The starting points of a successful retirement financially is to work out exactly how much you will need each month and limit your spending to that figure. When I first meet a new client who wishes to plan their retirement, the first thing I do is ask them to go through their bank statements, so that we can identify exactly where their money goes. You could find yourself surprised how small amounts of spending add up every month especially if you are one of those who must have their fix of gourmet coffees each day or perhaps you enjoy the £3 daily meal deal, this is £15 per week or £60 per month. It might not seem much on a daily basis but it can add up to quite a lot of money over the course of the month. You could find that for a retired person on a limited budget this could be unaffordable. We therefore, need to take into account each item of expenditure. In retirement, some of your outgoings will increase, others will be less and some items of expenditure will disappear altogether and some new items will appear.

Some of your expenditure which would previously have been quite expensive and will stop, Such as the monthly or annual train ticket for your commute to the city centre, or the tank of petrol you put into your car at the beginning of the week, your pension contributions of course will be no more, You will no longer be required to pay any further National Insurance Contributions, as these will come to an end when you reach state (cont’d)

TONY WELLINGS – 1,000 WORDS (CONT’D) pension age. You will no longer have to replace that suit that you wear to work each day, your clothing costs should reduce and in turn your dry cleaning costs. Buying clothes for work will be a thing of the past. Do you have a "swift half pint of beer " with work colleagues, or a coffee with the girls at lunchtime? These items of expenditure will represent a significant saving to your monthly outgoings. On the other hand there will be costs that will increase, for example your utility costs are likely to be more expensive, you will notice it more in the winter when the gas central heating or electric fire is on constantly to keep you warm from the winter snow because of course you will be at home more often. When you were working all day the burden of these costs were covered by your employer who had a responsibility to ensure that you were warm whilst you were in the workplace. You might see the cost of your trip down to the local supermarket increase as you might be tempted to eat those biscuits or that piece of cake every time you pass by the food cupboard. Other considerations to take into account will be the benefits you left behind with your job. Did you have a company car? Were you lucky enough to drive the latest BMW or perhaps it was a white van that you used to travel from meeting to meeting or job to job to generate business for your employer. If this is the case, on your last day at work you will have to hand in the keys to the vehicle on your last day at work. Will you buy a little run-around for yourself or will you be happy with public transport. After all you will probably qualify for a travel pass in the UK courtesy of your local council. Whatever your preferred mode of transport in retirement there will probably be some kind of cost involved which will need to be included in your retirement expenditure calculations. As well as the cost of buying the car, you will have to take into account the cost of running your vehicle. There will of course be the cost of the petrol or diesel fuel to consider, this could be anything from a few pounds per month to quite a bit of money depending of course on how often you will use it and how much running around you will have to do for the grandchildren. Then there is the Road Tax the licence duty for running your car on the roads. Again, depending on the efficiency and size of your car this can run from zero pounds to £500 or more. Then of course you have the upkeep of the car, the servicing and break down costs, which can run from a couple of hundred pounds each year to thousands. All of these costs have to be taken into consideration.

The world’s bestselling travel book is #1 New York Times bestseller

“When the book began, we were calling it 100 Drop-Dead Places, but that would have just covered all the basics,” she says. “So we added the extra zero, and immediately I had a panic-attack. But soon it was a challenge to cut the list down to just 1000 places. The title was considered really alarming in 2003 when the first book came out. People told me, the book will never sell, you’re crazy, you can’t say ‘die’ in the title. It was so close to 9/11 then, and people were more fearful.”
