The Rice Thresher advertising space is sold by column inch, and the paper is 4 columns wide. For example, a 2-column wide x 4-inch tall ad would total 8 column inches, and cost $96.00 (8 column inches x $12). The minimum ad size is 4 column inches (2 columns x 2 inches or 1 column x 4 inches). Additionally, student groups receive 50 percent off, and on campus groups get 25 percent off.

Color Ads

Due to the popularity and effectiveness of color advertising, we have reduced our full-color cost to $100 for all ad sizes.

SIZES

The Rice Thresher sells ads per column inches, but to make life easier, below is a breakdown of our basic ad sizes with the base price. Your rep can answer any questions you may have.

Discounts

A 10 percent discount is offered when you prepay for your advertisement. This discount can be bundled with student groups and on campus discounts. A pickup rate of 10 percent off is offered when the same ad runs in consecutive issues. A 20 percent discount is offered when the same ad runs in every issue for an entire semester.

All discounts must be approved by the advertising manager and a contract must be signed before the discount is applicable.

Inserts Free-standing, preprinted inserts can be placed into the fold of the Thresher at a rate of $200 per 3,000. Inserts larger than 20 pages are not accepted. Inserts must be purchased in increments of 3,000. Inserts are not sent to Thresher subscribers and are not available in special issues. A sample of the insert must be provided at the time of space reservation and must conform to Thresher advertising policies. Inserts must be received by TriStar Graphics at least a week in advance of publication date and should clearly be labeled with “Rice Thresher,” the date of insertion and advertiser contact information. The Thresher is not responsible for inserts that are mislabeled, misdirected or delivered late. The advertiser will be billed in full for inserts not canceled by 5 p.m. on the Friday prior to publication. DESIGN SERVICES

The Rice Thresher offers ad design services free of charge, but the space must be reserved two weeks in advance. Ads would then need to be approved the Friday before publication. Please speak to your ad rep if you require these services.

SUBMISSION METHOD

The Rice Thresher prefers ads be submitted via email to [email protected], or on disk in one of the following formats; PDF, TIFF or JPG (minimum resolution 300 dpi). Color ads must be in CMYK format.

DEADLINES

The Rice Thresher is published every Wednesday during the academic year, except during final exams and holidays. Deadlines are as follows: Space reservation/Cancellation: 3 p.m. Wednesday prior to publication Ad materials: 3 p.m. Friday prior to publication Payments: 5 p.m. Monday prior to publication Advertisers may be charged for space reserved if they do not cancel their reservation before the Wednesday deadline or if they do not submit ad copy by the Friday deadline. Note: Special editions require additional time. Space should be reserved two weeks prior to publication.

FORMAT

Student Media reserves the right to refuse or edit customer provided ads which are not the right size, contain grammatical errors or are not formatted for newspaper reproduction. The Rice Thresher is not responsible for errors which are the result of customerprovided ads not adhering to The Rice Thresher file guidelines.

General Standards

Advertising is not acceptable if it intends, in the opinion of The Rice Thresher, to destroy the confidence of the consumer. This includes advertising that is misleading, inaccurate, fraudulent, deceptive or ambiguous. If the content of an ad is deemed to distract from the content of the page or spread, the ad may be rejected. The business staff or Editor in Chief reserve the right to reject advertising that makes misleading claims or uses art or words that impugn or degrade sex, sexual orientation, race, national origin, creed, color, disability or age. The Rice Thresher reserves the right to reject advertising that promotes illegal activity or activity detrimental or damaging to the University and its educational mission.

RESTRICTIONS

The advertiser is responsible for securing rights to any copyrighted material within their advertisement. Ads that resemble editorial content will be labeled “Paid Advertisement.” The Thresher may also add the name of the advertiser to any ad that does not contain that information. The Thresher reserves the right to refuse any advertisement for any reason, to restrict illustrations or copy, and to verify the legitimacy of any claim made in an advertisement.

POLITICAL ADVERTISEMENT

All ads considered political in nature by The Rice Thresher staff members must be pre-paid before publication and must include the line Paid Advertisement along with the advertisers name and contact information.

Indemnification

By placing an ad, advertisers agree to indemnify The Rice Thresher, Rice University, its students and staff, and to hold them harmless from any claim that may arise in connection with any advertisement placed, service offered or activities related to media operations.

Position Requests

The Rice Thresher will attempt to honor position requests dependent on space availability. To guarantee special placement, clients can pay an additional $50 charge, and will not be charged unless the placement request is honored. The Thresher does not place ads in the opinion section or on the first page.

PAYMENT & CREDIT POLICIES

All advertising must be prepaid unless credit has been established and approved from the business manager. Credit will be extended only to those with a good payment history and proper references. A credit application is available upon request. Payments may be made by check or credit card. American Express, Visa, MasterCard and Discover Card are accepted. Full payment for advertising on credit is due within 30 days of publication date. Accounts 30 days past due may be charged the greater of 1.5 percent of the amount due or $10 per month per invoice as a late fee. The Thresher reserves the right to refuse or revoke credit at any time. Accounts 60 days past due or with a poor payment history will be refused advertising. Advertisers will be charged for space reserved if they do not cancel their reservation by 3 p.m. on the Monday prior to publication.

TEARSHEETS & BILLING

One PDF tearsheet is emailed along with an invoice within two business days after publication for all display advertising. No tearsheets are provided for classified advertising. Payment is expected within 30 days, unless you have agreed to prepay and receive a 10 percent discount. A $25 service fee will be assessed on all returned checks. Customers who receive a discount for bulk space purchases, and who do not fulfill their commitment will be subject to and liable for backbilling (a recalculation of their account less unearned discount). Additionally, any client who reserves space, but fails to cancel it by the Friday deadline, may be billed the entire amount of the original order. Statement of Operations

The Rice Thresher, the official student newspaper of Rice University, is owned and operated by the students using facilities provided by the university. The paper was founded in 1916 and is a not-for-profit publication supported, in part, by the Blanket Tax, voted on by the student population. Advertising sales are provided as a subsidiary of The Rice Thresher and are a service to the community and aid to help student activities at Rice University.

CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING

Classified ads are available for $20 per block of 40 words per edition. Copy and prepayment must be received by 5 p.m. Friday prior to publication. Classifieds appear on the Backpage. The Rice Thresher recently revamped its website, and with that can offer online advertising for very reasonable rates. When you purchase a print ad, you can bundle online advertising for a small monthly fee. Reader demographics

The Rice Thresher has been serving the Rice community since 1916. The student managed publication is a not-for-profit organization, so while your advertisement helps you reach the students and friends of Rice University, your advertising dollars directly help students learn valuable skills. And money spent on campus stays on campus. The Rice Thresher serves a campus with more than 5,000 students and 2,000 faculty and staff. The paper distributes 3,500 copies on and off campus every Wednesday. On average 3.2 people read each copy of the paper.

ERRORS

The Thresher accepts no responsibility for errors beyond the cost of the first insertion. It is the advertiser’s responsibility to verify the accuracy of ad copy. Prepress proofs of ads will be furnished upon request.
