2015-‐2016 OBSA Travel Baseball Manager
The philosophy of OBSA Travel Baseball is to provide a higher level of competition beyond its in-‐house recreational program for talented and motivated OBSA baseball players. Player development is the main priority of OBSA travel baseball. OBSA Travel is a feeder program for Oswego High School and Oswego East High School. If coaching a high school level team, the philosophy is to prepare the players for their high school season both physically and mentally. Below is a list to give you an idea of the expectations when becoming an OBSA Travel Manager: ● Be at Tryouts in July to create your team ● Parent communication ● Follow the OBSA Travel Guidelines (a copy can be given to you prior to your application if you desire) ● Organize practice plans, scrimmages, and tournament schedule ● Attend OBSA Travel meetings ● Be willing to serve on committees to make the organization stronger ● Ordering of Equipment through the VP of Baseball ● Possibly coach fall baseball ● Attend KCBL (or similar league) meetings A few other notes: ● Fall Baseball goes from Sept. 1st through October 15th (closest weekend to those dates) ● Speed and Agility will take place November/December ● Practices will begin in January and will consist of cage time @ ESP and OHS Field House time ● Teams 14u and under will participate in the KCBL baseball league (weeknight games) ● A minimum of 5 weekend tournaments ● Can have 2 “official” assistant coaches ● If there are not enough players to field a team at the tryouts, there will not be a team for that age All managerial candidates will go through an interview process. The Navy Managers will be chosen prior to tryouts. They will assist in the evaluation (tryouts) of their respective age levels to decide how many teams would be appropriate. Managerial candidates for additional teams per age level will be will be told so that if it is decided that another team is warranted they can be evaluating players for their prospective teams. OBSA Travel has a mentor program in place. So if this is your first time coaching travel you will have support. Selection Process & Application The following manager selection factors apply to each of the teams in the Travel Division of Oswego Baseball and Softball Association (OBSA). The Board of Directors determines all selection decisions. All candidates must first complete the Manager Volunteer Application form below and are subject to a criminal background check. The Board of Directors will consider this form as the entry point in this process. If approvals of the form are granted, then the following factors will apply in the selection process. Primary Factors: ~Will be given to a candidate who exhibits the spirit intended of OBSA (as a rewarding, fun, learning experience for the youth of School District #308 and the Oswegoland Park District). ~Preference may be given to a candidate if he/she has a child in the travel division of which he/she is applying for. ~Preference will be given to a candidate with prior coaching experience, knowledge of the game and teaching abilities. ~Preference will be given to a candidate if he/she has coached youth sports without incident. “Without Incident” is determined by the feedback received from Board Members, umpires, peer coaches and parents. Secondary Factors: ~Preference will be given to a candidate if he/she coached in the league during the last season. ~Preference will be given to a candidate if he/she coached in the immediate lower league during the last season, without incident and wishes to continue. ~ In the event of multiple candidate are applying for a position, preference will be given based upon experience & seniority level (i.e. number of years of coaching experience in the league or comparable out-‐of-‐town experience) of the candidate. ~In the event of multiple candidate applying for a manager position, attempts will be made to offer an assistant coaching assignment, should that be acceptable to the candidate(s) involved.
