Big West Regular Season Co-Champions Receive Major Awards
Big West Announces 2015 Men's Tennis All-Conference Team
IRVINE, CA – UC Irvine's Sebastian Heim highlighted the 2015 Big West Men's Tennis All-Conference Team with his
dual selection as the Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, while Eric Steidlmayer of UC Davis received Coach of the Year recognition. Heim became the first in Big West history to capture both marquee awards in the same season. A native of Speyer, Germany, Heim posted a 22-7 dual record in singles, including 18-6 at the No. 1 position. He helped the Anteaters to an overall record of 20-13 and a share of the Big West regular season title. Heim defeated his opponent in 18 of his team's wins, as he helped UCI establish a conference record for most wins in a season. He also notched a 6-1 record against Big West opponents, including wins during the conference tournament against Cal Poly's Ben Donovan and UC Santa Barbara's Tobias Galskov, a pair of fellow first-team all-conference honorees. Heim led all conference players with three Big West Athlete of the Week citations, which is also a record number for a UCI freshman. Thirteen of his last 15 singles victories were in straight sets. Steidlmayer oversaw the continued turnaround of UC Davis as he became the program's first Big West Coach of the Year representative. The third-year mentor guided the Aggies to a 16-6 overall record, and a 4-1 conference mark as they shared their first Big West regular season title with UC Irvine. The 16 victories represent a school Division I record for wins in a season, surpassing the previous highwater mark of 14 from last season. Steidlmayer also returned the Aggies to the national rankings for the first time in seven seasons, reentering the ITA poll at No. 72 on Feb. 3, 2015. UC Davis climbed to a program-best No. 53 on April 14. Steidlmayer led his team four wins against nationally ranked foes this season – No. 52 Santa Clara, No. 75 Rice, No. 49 Cal Poly and No. 65 UC Santa Barbara.
