The 1 Awards is an awards ceremony honoring area scholastic athletics from the previous year, by recognizing the best Southwest Missouri area athlete, teams and specialty awards (or the “1”) in various categories.
Frequently Asked Questions 1. Who is hosting the 1 Awards? a. Springfield Sports Commission and Ozarks Sports Zone (KY3, Inc.) are hosting the 1 Awards. Elliott Lodging is a major sponsor. OzarksSportsZone.com is where voting will take place and is part of KY3, Inc. 2. Who can win the 1 Awards? a. High school athletes within the KY3 Springfield area DMA (designated market area) are eligible for nomination and selection as the 1. i. Specialty categories include: 1. Small team of the year (Class 1-3 or class 1 in specialty sports) 2. Large team of the year (Class 4-5 or class 2 in specialty sports) 3. Male athlete of the year 4. Female athlete of the year 5. Other specialty categories may include: Cheer, Dance, Fans, Pep Band ii. Sports categories include: 1. 1 Athlete in: a. Baseball b. Boys Basketball c. Boys Cross Country d. Boys Golf e. Boys Soccer f. Boys Swimming & Diving g. Boys Tennis h. Boys Track Athlete i. Football j. Girls Basketball k. Girls Cross Country l. Girls Golf m. Girls Soccer n. Girls Swimming & Diving o. 3. How are the winners chosen? a. Nomination process: Four athletes from the Springfield area DMA are selected in each sports category. These categories are shown in FAQ 2. There will be specialty award categories, too. The 11 person Ozarks Sports Zone staff and Springfield Sports Commission representatives will compile the candidates based on a combination of honors, statistics, team success, individual performance and citizenship. Nominees will be selected following each of the fall, winter and spring seasons and will be contacted of their selection throughout the year – all nominees will be made public in early June. b. Voting process: Fans may vote for their choice at OzarksSportsZone.com. Voting begins approximately June 8 and runs through July 21. Fans will be allowed to vote one time per day. A bio of each athlete will be provided. A new voting method will be instituted this year that will help determine the winner in the fairest way possible. The previous poll only allowed a vote for the winner. This system will ask voters to rank the athletes from 1 to 4. The total points are added up to determine the most deserving 1 Award recipient. The online results of the contest are 100% decided on fan voting. Winners will be announced at the event on the night of July 28. 4. How will I know who has been nominated for the 1 Awards? a. Nominees will be notified before the voting process by their school’s athletic director. After the nominees have been notified, nominees will be posted on the Springfield Sports Commission (SpringfieldMOsports.org) website and O-Zone website (OzarksSportsZone.com). Voting will ensue June 8. 5. When are tables and tickets available? a. Tables of ten seats are on sale until July 9 at www.the1Awards.com. b. Individual Tickets to the 1 Awards are available until July 20 at www.the1Awards.com. c. Purchases made by July 20 will be mailed out. After July 20, ticket purchases will be held at will call at the event. 6. I’m a business or organization and want to be involved. How can I do this? a. Sponsorships are in the form of traditional sponsorship, table sponsorship or program advertisements. Inquiries can be sent to
[email protected] 7. Where and when is the 1 Awards? a. The ceremony is at the Ramada Oasis Convention Center, July 28, 2015. b. A social hour, including food and soft drink, begins 6:00 p.m. Ceremony will start at 7:00 p.m. 8. Since this is an evening event, will there be food and beverage? a. There will be food stations featuring taste creations from the Ramada Oasis Hotel and Convention Center. Water and tea will also be available. Ozarks Coca-Cola and Dr. Pepper Bottling Company will provide soft drinks for the night. The food and drink is included with ticket purchase. 9. Rules and Regulations a. All athletes must come from high schools in the designated market area of KY3, Inc. b. Voting will only take place from June 8-July 21. Votes will not be accepted outside of this time frame or through any other medium than the proper online polling. c. Fans will be allowed to vote one time per day. d. The online results of the contest are 100% decided on fan voting. e. 1 Awards committee has the authority to remove an athlete from the contest in cases such as school official’s request, criminal activity, etc. f. Springfield Sports Commission, KY3, Inc. and all associated parties are not liable for internet/voting issues. g. Results and decisions by 1 Awards selection committee are final.
