PLYMOUTH PRIMARY HOCKEY FESTIVAL PROGRAMME Welcome to the 14th edition of the PSHA Primary Hockey Festival!
This years festival welcomes several new schools to the event who have never entered before. We think this is a great sign of many schools taking on hockey on a more regular basis which will only help us to grow the amount of opportunities available in future. Alongside the new attendees we have many returning schools who we would like to thank for their continued efforts and commitment to hockey.

*Please note this is not the award
During the day of competition all participants will also be involved in a set of skills challenges. Each will generate their own score and as a group have a final average score to determine the winning team of the skills challenge.
A new award this year is the GOLDEN STICK!
This award will be presented to 1 boy and 1 girl at the end of the festival for all round performance both in there own game and supporting others around them. This should certainly be a great honour as there will only be 2 out of more than 500 participants!
These skills are to be completed during the teams pool allocation which will be an hour long for each. Please make sure these scores are returned to HQ as soon as they have been completed to ensure we can locate the winning team promptly.
The skill challenges are;
As much as we would like to award everyone participants great achievements, its just not possible, however we do have further opportunities for those who demonstrate great skills and understanding of the game.
1) 2) 3) 4) 5)
Throughout the 2 days we have Talent Spotters who will be making note of those who they think should be offered a place on the Excellence Centre programme.
Juggling Target Flicking Passing Lifting Hurdles Jab Tackle Joust
Please ensure you have read the instruction cards prior to the event if you would like to do any practice at school.
Each team will be allocated an assistant from our group of young leaders to help recording scores but this will primarily be the responsibility of the team manger. @hockey_dynamics
This is a 4 week course which follows the festival in the final term of school where they are given a chance to have extra sessions of practice on the pitch. From this group we look to choose a group to represent Plymouth Schools in further competition.

Ball
-
The ball used will be a Mini, which will be provided by festival HQ.
Pitch
-
1/4 of a full hockey pitch (23 metres x 55 metres) Shooting circles are D shaped across the full width of the pitch and arc out to 13 metres.
Players
-
There must be 3 boys and 3 girls on the field of play for each team. There are NO goalkeepers.
Starting the game
The game is started with a push forward or backwards from the centre spot or a self pass. Both teams start inside their defending half of the pitch.
Self Pass
A self pass means you can pass to yourself as long as there are 2 distinctive and separate actions.
-
Ball outside of play The ball has to be completely over the side line to be out of play
Sideline ball -
When the balls exits the pitch on the sideline, play is restarted from the point where it left and by the other team. If the ball goes out between the baseline and the long corner mark the free hit will be taken from the long corner mark.
Long corner -
A long corner is taken is the ball exits the pitch off the baseline when the last touch was from a defending player. Self start can be used but a pass must be made before scoring a goal.

Defender Restart
When the ball exits the baseline off an attacker player, the game is restarted from the top of the defending D by the defending team.

-
Shooting circles (D’s) cross the edge of the pitch. This cross point is also where long corners are taken from and are located 3 metres up from the baseline.
To score
-
For a team to score the whole ball has to be over the line. If lifted must not be directed towards or through players. If a goal is scored the game is re-started from the centre of the pitch.

Uses of stick -
Players are only allowed to use the flat side or inner edge of the stick and must not swing the stick dangerously.

GOAL OR NO GOAL
At the end of the pool stages everyone will need to gather on the pitch. This is so all can be involved in the lunch time feature of the GOAL or NO GOAL competition. Participants will be asked to make a choice of whether they think a striker will score past a goalkeeper of not. If they guess correctly they stay in the game until we have 1 eventually winner by repeating the process. That individual will win themselves a prize courtesy of Gryphon hockey.
GUIDANCE NOTES -
Timings -Timing will be done centrally and must start and stop on the sounds of the air horn. Games will be 10 minutes
