A NEW SEASON BEGINS The Southern Connecticut State University softball team begins the season in Clermont, Fla. where it plays 10 games in six days against Shippensburg University, Bloomsburg University, Wilmington University, Wayne State University, Hillsdale College, New York Institute of Technology, Philadelphia University, University of Minnesota Duluth and University of Sioux Falls (S.D.). ALL-TIME VS. SHIPPENSBURG This will be the first-ever meeting between the Owls and the Shippensburg Raiders. ALL-TIME VS. BLOOMSBURG This will be the first-ever meeting between the Owls and the Bloomsburg Huskies. ALL-TIME VS. WILMINGTON The Owls are 2-0 all-time against the Wilmington Wildcats, defeating them in a doubleheader last year. ALL-TIME VS. WAYNE STATE This will be the first-ever meeting between the Owls and the Wayne State Warriors. ALL-TIME VS. HILLSDALE The Owls are 2-6-1 all-time against the Hillsdale Chargers, the last game being played in 1999. ALL-TIME VS. NYIT The Owls are 2-1 against the NYIT Bears, with all three games coming in 2010. ALL-TIME VS. PHILADELPHIA The Owls are 5-0 against the Philadelphia Rams, with the last meeting coming in 2011. ALL-TIME VS. MINNESOTA DULUTH The Owls are 0-4-1 against the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. They last played each other in 1995. ALL-TIME VS. SIOUX FALLS This will be the first-ever meeting between the Owls and the Sioux Falls Cougars. NEW LEADER IN THE DUGOUT Jillian Ortega was named the head softball coach in the fall of 2014. NICE TO KNOW YOU Kaley Marden and Julie Muscarella both exhausted their eligibility at the conclusion of last year. Marden hit .353 as a senior and led the team among players with at least 50 at-bats with 14 doubles, two home runs, 36 RBI and a .543 OBP. Muscarella, an outfielder, hit .223 with nine doubles and 20 RBI.
THREE OWLS EARN NE-10 HONORS Shortstop Nicole Buch and centerfielder Sarah Koerner were named First-Team All-Conference, and first baseman and captain Kaley Marden was named Second-Team AllConference last year. KOERNER NAMED TO ALL-ECAC TEAM Sarah Koerner, the senior outfielder from Coventry, R.I. was named Second-Team All-ECAC. The ECAC is comprised of 33 schools on the east coast and includes 25 teams that are not in the NE-10. ALL-AMERICAN SCHOLAR ATHLETES Kaley Marden, Arianne Tedeschi and Kristie Vitulli were all recognized last year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as scholar-athletes. Student athletes must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in order
MARDEN’S MIND RECOGNIZED AGAIN Kaley Marden’s diligence in the classroom also earned her a spot on the Northeast-10 Conference Softball All-Academic Team last year.
A STRONG VETERAN PRESENCE Southern Connecticut has 21 student-athletes returning from last year’s team that finished with a 19-18 mark. Among those are Nicole Buch, Sarah Koerner, and Danielle Piazza, all of whom batted over .300 last year. CONFERENCE RANKINGS Buch, Koerner, and Marden finished last season among the conference and national leaders. Buch’s on-base percentage (0.528) was best in the conference and 27th in the nation, her batting average (0.402) was third in the conference, and her walks per game (0.73) were first in the conference and ninth in the nation. Koerner’s on-base percentage (0.471) was fifth in the conference, her stolen bases per game (0.47) were second in the conference, and her walks per game (0.67) were second in the conference and 17th in the nation. REPLACING MARDEN Kaley Marden’s doubles per game (0.39) were good for second in the conference – just 0.01 behind the first place finisher – and 20th in the nation, her runs batted in per game (1.00) were also second in the conference, she struck out once every 113 at bats, best in the conference and second best in the nation, and she was fifth in walks (0.53) in the conference. SOUTHERN AMONG NE-10’s BEST Southern Connecticut finished second in the conference in double plays per game (0.36) and first in the conference in on-base percentage (0.364)
