The Double Entry Journal assignment is intended to do two things: help you develop your active reading skills, and show that you are noticing more about the text than the simple plot line. As you read, focus on the themes of the novel. THERE MUST BE AN ENTRY FROM EACH SECTION OF THE NOVEL: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3! In Drive, click Create (red button). Select “Document” to begin. After typing the MLA heading and citation, click Table and select 2 X 1. These will be for your passage and analysis.

[email protected] if you have any questions about the format. DO NOT be afraid to ask questions!!! Format: Top MLA Heading MLA Works Cited Entry for the novel (You may use easybib.com.) Left side: QUOTE the passage you will address in the entry; cite the page number in parenthesis Right side: Compose YOUR 150-200-word response (see below for guidelines). Post a word count for your response. THE WORD COUNT OF THE QUOTE SHOULD NOT BE INCLUDED. Your grade will be adversely affected if you do not meet this requirement. AVOID PLOT SUMMARY! Be certain that you analyze and dissect rhetorical and literary devices providing the AIM (Author’s Intended Meaning) behind the device, the EFFECT (feeling or emotion established by the device), and the HOW (how is the device used/or how does it work). Then, connect that device found within the quote to the overall theme/themes of the novel. You must include two or more supporting details.

PART TWO: You have to act quickly because your tribute (your mentee) is running out of supplies and food! (S)he is the only tribute you have left, and you really cannot stand to see them die in front of you. You need to make a political poster (letter or legal size) to let the people of Panem know that your tribute is most worthy! Remember, if the people of Panem like your tribute, they will send a small parachute of medicine, food, or whatever your tribute needs. Think about the following: Who is your tribute? What district is he/she from? What is his/her distinguishing feature? What is his/her special skill? What makes your tribute worthy of other people’s sponsorship? **Treat this as a campaign even if your chosen tribute perished in the text. Remember the ways to persuade. Think about if you want to make them feel sorry for your tribute or maybe just make a sponsor jump on the “bandwagon.” Include SEVERAL reasons why your tribute should be saved. Prepare the poster using the “Google Drawings” feature found under NEW in Google Drive using color, graphics, and information to win the people of Panem to your cause. Share through Google Drive with
