2016 Big South Football BACK-TO-BACK: CHARLESTON SOUTHERN RETURNS TO FCS PLAYOFFS The Charleston Southern Buccaneers wrapped up the Big South’s automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs with its 28-7 regular-season finale victory over Kennesaw State to claim the co-championship with Liberty at 4-1 in the conference. CSU earned the AQ based on its 48-26 win over the Flames on Nov. 12, and is just the second team in the Big South’s automatic bid history (since 2010) to earn the AQ in consecutive years. The Bucs are the third program in league annals to make back-to-back playoff appearances. BIG SOUTH HAS CO-CHAMPIONS FOR THE SIXTH TIME IN EIGHTYEARS Charleston Southern and Liberty shared the Big South football championship with 4-1 league records. It is the sixth time in eight seasons that the conference has co-champions in football. It is also the eighth time in the league’s 15-year football history that multiple champions were crowned in a season. CSU earned its third overall title (two shared), while Liberty took home its Big South-record eighth overall football trophy (six shared). SEVEN-ELEVEN This is the Big South’s seventh year with automatic representation to the FCS Playoffs, as CSU’s berth is the 11th overall appearance for the league. Charleston Southern will be playing in the first round for the first time, as the Bucs earned a bye into the second round in 2015. The Big South is 5-3 all-time in first round playoff games, including 2-1 in road contests. DEJA VU -- SECOND STRAIGHT MATCH-UP OF RANKED BIG SOUTH TEAMS For the second straight week and fourth time in league history, two Big South teams ranked in the major FCS polls went head-to-head, as No. 13/14 Charleston Southern defeated No. 22 Kennesaw State, 28-7 this past Saturday -- one week after the Buccaneers defeated the then-No. 24/25 Liberty Flames. Charleston Southern has been involved in all four such contests, and has been victorious each time. RANK AND FILE With Charleston Southern in the national polls this week, the Big South has had a football squad nationally-ranked for 77 consecutive weeks, dating back to Week 9 of the 2011 season (Oct. 24). The Buccaneers are ranked No. 10 in both the FCS Coaches and STATS ranking. With Liberty and Kennesaw State also appearing in the Top 25 during the season, it was the fourth consecutive campaign the Big South had three programs nationally-ranked at some point in the same year. BUCS TIE BIG SOUTH RECORD FOR CONSECUTIVE CONFERENCE ROAD WINS Charleston Southern’s 48-26 win at Liberty in Week 11 was its seventh consecutive Big South road win -- tying the league’s all-time record that was first accomplished by Liberty from Nov. 18, 2006 to Nov. 14, 2009. CSU’s next Big South road game will be in 2017.

CATCHING CHASTON Kennesaw State RB CHASTON BENNETT, who became just the second running back in Big South history with 100 receiving yards in a game with 110 at Gardner-Webb in Week 8, set the Big South singleseason record for most touchdown receptions by a running back with five in 2016, as well as the Big South career record for TD catches by a running back with seven. The previous season record was three, and he broke the league’s career mark of six in Week 11 against Presbyterian. Bennett’s 583 career receiving yards are third-most in the conference record book. CHASING CHASTON Kennesaw State RB CHASTON BENNETT tied the Big South record for most consecutive multi-TD games at six, as he shares the record that was first established by Stony Brook’s MIGUEL MAYSONET in 2012. Bennett scored 13 touchdowns during his streak (nine rushing, four receiving), and averaged 25.8 yards on his TD runs in the six-game span -- with three longer than 47 yards. His four TD catches went for 43, 61, 36 and 27 yards. KENNESAW STATE’S BRIAN BOHANNON A FINALIST FOR EDDIE ROBINSON AWARD Kennesaw State second-year head coach BRIAN BOHANNON is among the 15 finalists for the STATS Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award -- the ninth consecutive season the Big South has had a finalist for the honor. This season, Kennesaw State became the first team to score at least 45 points in three consecutive Big South games since Liberty in 2009, as the Owls averaged 47.0 points in their three conference wins. Bohannon’s 14 wins after two seasons are tied for the fifth-most by a coach in his first two years in the Big South, and the Owls earned their first-ever national ranking the week of Nov. 14, as KSU was ranked No. 22 in the FCS Coaches poll.

2016 Big South Football KICKING PROBE Liberty freshman kicker ALEX PROBERT tied the Big South single-season record for most 10-point kicking games with five, which included a span of four straight games with double-digits in points, He also led the league with 15 field goals this season -- tied for the second-most by a freshman in Big South annals and one shy of the record of 16. Meanwhile, Probert became the first kicker in Big South history to make three field goals from at least 45 yards in the same game in Week 7 at Kennesaw State. He was a perfect 3-of-3 for the day, hitting from 47, 50 and 47 yards in the Flames’ win over the Owls. Probert is the third kicker in the conference record book to convert three times from 40+ yards in a contest. In addition, he has two 50-yard field goals to his credit -- just the second Big South freshman to achieve this feat in a campaign. GEE-WIZ Gardner-Webb LB CHAD GETER, who opened the 2016 season as one of 34 FCS players named to the 2017 Reese’s Senior Bowl Watch List, ends his career as the third player in Big South history with 200 career solo tackles (third with 203), and tied for seventh with 345 total stops. He became the 14th player in Big South history with 300 career tackles when he eclipsed the milestone in Week 8 against Kennesaw State. Geter’s career also includes 35.5 TFL, tied for sixth in league history. REG-GIE, REG-GIE Monmouth sophomore WR REGGIE WHITE JR. posted four 10-reception games this season, the second-most in a campaign in Big South history. He finished as the league leader with 69 receptions, 6.3 per game and 934 receiving yards through 11 contests. Last season in 11 games as a freshman, White had 35 receptions for 432 yards. He recorded a career-high 11 receptions at Delaware State in Week 2, and tallied a career-high 167 receiving yards in Week 5 against Fordham. MOVING THE CHAINS Monmouth RB LAVON CHANEY departs as the Big South’s career leader for most receptions by a running back with 88, as he broke the old record of 77 that was held by DE’ANGELO HENDERSON during Week 6. Chaney’s 715 career receiving yards are second-most among Big South RBs and just shy of Henderson’s record of 731. Meanwhile, Chaney threw for three touchdowns during his time in the Big South, tied with former Liberty WR ADRIAN HALL for the most TD passes by a non-quarterback. EXCEPTIONAL ESTES Gardner-Webb TE MIKE ESTES ends his tenure as the Big South’s all-time leading receiver among tight ends. He holds the career records for receptions (122), receiving yards (1,533) and touchdowns (10). Estes is the only tight end in league annals with 100 career receptions and 1,000 career receiving yards. BLOCK PARTY Monmouth tied the Big South single-season record with a national-leading eight blocked kicks in 2016. The Hawks matched the mark first established by Presbyterian in 2009. MU blocked a kick in five of six games from Week 2-7, including a Big South single-game record four at Delaware State in Week 2, with MIKE BASILE recording two of the deflections. The Hawks blocked two punts, one field goal and one PAT attempt to break the old league record of three set by VMI in 2004 and matched by GardnerWebb in 2009. Basile was responsible for the FG and PAT blocks, and is the first Big South player with two blocked kicks in a game since Liberty’s FRANCIS BAH in 2012. SEA SHELLS Liberty WR DANTE’ SHELLS ends his career with 119 receptions for 2,061 career yards -- the 13th player in Big South history with 100 career receptions and 2,000 career receiving yards. He joined the Big South’s 100-reception club in Week 8 against Monmouth, and eclipsed the 2,000-yard receiving milestone in Week 11 against Charleston Southern. Earlier this season, Shells and Kennesaw State WR JUSTIN SUMPTER were the first players since Liberty’s DARRIN PETERSON in 2014 with touchdown receptions in four consecutive games. MAGIC MIKE Monmouth DB MIKE BASILE became the 15th Big South player with 300 career tackles when he eclipsed the milestone in the season finale at Gardner-Webb. With 307, he is 16 away from entering the league’s all-time Top 10. Basile is sixth all-time with 193 solo hits, and needs 51 to break the career record of 243 solo tackles that is held by Coastal Carolina’s QUINN BACKUS. Basile is also likely to become the fourth Big South player with 400 career stops next season. Meanwhile, Basile blocked three kicks this season and has four total in his career -- tied for third all-time in league annals. He is one away from moving into a tie for second. Former PC defensive standout and current Arizona Cardinal JUSTIN BETHEL is the Big South career leader with nine blocked kicks.

2016 Big South Football BOTH ENDS OF THE SPECTRUM Kennesaw State finished as the Big South leader in both scoring offense (38.9) and scoring defense (21.7). The Owls are the third consecutive Big South member to lead the league in both categories in a season, and the ninth time overall. The Owls’ 38.9 points per game are third-most in a season in league history. TEETER-TOTER Liberty freshman QB STEPHEN CALVERT and Charleston Southern freshman QB SHANE BUCENELL are the first freshmen quarterbacks in Big South history to throw at least 3 TDs in a game three times, and each eclipsed the Big South freshman record of 12 touchdown passes in a season. Calvert currently holds the new mark with 15, just ahead of Bucenell’s 14 scoring strikes. MAD MAX FURY ROAD Gardner-Webb QB TYRELL MAXWELL is looking to become the first quarterback in Big South history to finish as the league’s leading rusher. He is currently first with 965 yards -- the second-highest singleseason rushing total by a QB, and has a 105-yard advantage over FCS Playoff-bound RB MIKE HOLLOWAY, who is third in the conference with 860 rushing yards. Maxwell, who is the only quarterback in Big South history with two 700-yard rushing seasons, is currently the leading rusher among FCS quarterbacks this season. KHALIL’S GOT THE WILL Gardner-Webb RB KHALIL LEWIS finished as the Big South leader with 14 rushing touchdowns -- the first Runnin’ Bulldog EVER to lead the Big South in the category -- unless Charleston Southern’s MIKE HOLLOWAY (11) surpasses the total during the FCS Playoffs. It also broke SHED HARRIS’ single-season program record set in 1996. Lewis concluded the year with 952 rushing yards, and along with TYRELL MAXWELL’s 965 rushing yards, gave Gardner-Webb two 900-yard rushers in a season for the first time in the program’s senior college history. TREY QUATRO Kennesaw State QB TREY WHITE became the first quaterback in Big South history to score four rushing touchdowns in a game, as he tied the league’s single-game record in Week 9 at Monmouth. White ran in TDs in each quarter, running in from 3, 1, 4 and 1 yards against the Hawks. His career total stands at 17 -- tied for the third-most rushing touchdowns by a Big South QB. White is the league’s all-time leader among quarterbacks with three 3-TD rush games. POINT OF ORDER Liberty owns the Big South record for most consecutive games with a point scored at 133, while the second-longest active streak belongs to Charleston Southern at 56. Liberty’s Big South-record streak for most consecutive games scoring in double figures ended at 76, as the Flames managed just seven points in the season finale at Coastal Carolina. Monmouth and CSU take over the active streak at seven games. Meanwhile, Liberty has scored a point in all 73 of its Big South games, the longest such streak in league annals. Of those 73 games, the last 61 have been in double digits. Charleston Southern’s current streak of 47 conference games with a point scored is the third-longest all-time, and seven games away from second-place. BIG SOUTH POSTS ANOTHER SOLID CAMPAIGN AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE FCS FOES The Big South is 12-10 after 22 games against non-conference FCS opponents (11-6 when excluding FBS transitioning Coastal Carolina). Since the start of the 2013 campaign, the Big South is 64-32 ( =66.7 winning percentage) in regular-season competition and 69-37 ( =65.1) when including postseason games in that span. The Big South posted at least a 60.0 winning clip in 2013, 2014 and 2015. AMBUSH MARKETING Monmouth WR DARREN AMBUSH became the first Big South player since 2014 with 200 receiving yards in a game, as he totaled 210 on seven receptions at Liberty in Week 8. His total is tied for the sixth-highest single-game receiving output in league history, and it was his second game this season with more than 200 all-purpose yards. DAILY DOUBLE Charleston Southern held three of its five Big South opponents to less than 10 points, the second consecutive season the Bucs have achieved this feat. CSU held back-to-back league foes to less than 10 points (7 - Monmouth, 3 - Presbyterian), the seventh such occurrence in league history, and the fourth straight year it has been accomplished. The Bucs were the last Big South squad with this distinction, as CSU set the record of three consecutive games holding conference foes to under 10 points in 2015.

2016 Big South Football BIG SOUTH SCORES MORE FOR VETERANS The Big South Conference teamed up with corporate partner Hardee’s® to administer a special football fundraiser and military appreciation initiative to celebrate and honor America’s veterans around this year’s Veteran’s Day holiday. Together, the Big South and Hardee’s will each donate $5 to the Patriot Foundation for every point scored by Big South football teams during six designated games from Oct. 22-Nov. 12. A total of $3,240 was raised. INSTANT CLASSIC - CHARLESTON SOUTHERN’S MEMORABLE OPENER Big South preseason favorite Charleston Southern was the first league member to appear in the third edition of the national season-opening FCS Kickoff, and the Buccaneers did not disappoint in their 24-17 overtime loss at #1/1 North Dakota State. CSU held the Bison scoreless in the first quarter and led 3-0 until NDSU tied it with a field goal to end the opening half. The Bucs led twice in the game, and rallied to tie the game at 17-17 with a chance to win in regulation. It was the first overtime game in the history of the Fargodome, and marked Charleston Southern’s second consecutive game against the nation’s No. 1-ranked FCS program and third in a seven-week span (dating back to last year). FANTASTIC FOSTER Gardner-Webb freshman DB JAYLAN FOSTER is second in the Big South with five interceptions -- the most-ever by a frosh in league history. Foster’s 111 yards on fumble returns are also a Big South singleseason record. He leads NCAA Division I FCS in defensive return yards (185) and is also among the national leaders with seven takeaways in 2016. RUSH WEEK For the third time in Big South history, three teams averaged 200 rushing yards a game. Kennesaw State was tops with 320.6, followed by Charleston Southern (273.7) and Gardner-Webb (229.0). The previous trifectas were in 2007 and 2008. This season was the first time the Runnin’ Bulldogs rushed for 200-plus yards per game as Big South members and set GWU’s Division I-era record for ground effectiveness. GWU’s previous Big South best was 192.9 in the league’s first season of 2002. HE’S PURPOSEFUL Kennesaw State RB CHASTON BENNETT posted a career-high 267 all-purpose yards in Week 10 against Clark Atlanta, his third game this year with more than 200 all-purpose yards. He is the seventh different player in league history with three such games in a season, and also moved into the conference’s all-time Top 10 for career 200-yard all-purpose games with three. LIBERTY FIRST TEAM WITH 50 BIG SOUTH VICTORIES Liberty’s 36-21 win at Kennesaw State in Week 8 was the Flames’ 50th Big South victory, becoming the first program in the league’s 15-year history to win 50 conference games. Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern are tied for third with 34 league victories (former member Coastal Carolina is second at 44). Liberty is 53-20 all-time in Big South contests ( =72.6 percent). IT’S ACADEMIC Liberty OL LUCAS HOLDER received CoSIDA Academic All-District honors Nov. 3. The Big South has had an Academic All-District honoree every year since the conference began football in 2002, and Holder advances to the Academic All-America ballot. The Big South has had a football Academic All-American four out of the last five seasons. MAD MAX Gardner-Webb QB TYRELL MAXWELL’s 87-yard touchdown run against Presbyterian in Week 6 was the longest rush from scrimmage by a quarterback in Big South history, bettering the old record of 77 yards. Maxwell’s rush is the second-longest in league annals, but the longest against a Division I opponent. Meanwhile, Maxwell had a 74-yard completion for a TD to KYLE HORTON against the Blue Hose to become the first quarterback in the Big South record book with an 80-yard TD rush and 70-yard TD pass in the same game. 2016 Big South Football #10/10 CHARLESTON SOUTHERN BUCCANEERS (7-3, 4-1 Big South) Head Coach: Jamey Chadwell (4th year) CSU Record: 35-13 (16-5 Big South) Overall Record: 60-35 * Charleston Southern meets Wofford for the 14th time on Saturday, but the first since 2010. The Bucs, who are winless against the Terriers, will play their sixth game this year against a ranked team. * CSU will open the FCS Playoffs for the second straight year against a SoCon opponent. Last season, the Bucs’ first postseason foe was The Citadel in the second round. * The Bucs’ 35 wins in four years under head coach JAMEY CHADWELL equals the program’s output from the seven years prior (2005-11). * CSU limited Kennesaw State’s triple option attack -- ranked third in the country in rushing entering play -- to 172 yards on 3.7 yards per carry.
* The Bucs have fared very well against triple option teams over the last two years. In four games against The Citadel and Kennesaw State (all wins), CSU has allowed just 40 total points and 665 yards rushing on 3.7 yards per carry. CSU has held the opposition to below 200 yards rushing in every game. * WR KAMERON BROWN leads the nation in yards per catch at 21.52 (23 for 495) -- the second-highest single-season average in Big South history. * With 26 career rushing touchdowns, RB MIKE HOLLOWAY needs one more to move into the Big South’s all-time Top 10 in the category.
