VIKINGS READY FOR STEP UP IN COMPETITION AT SUNDODGER INVITATIONAL SATURDAY PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State cross country program races against the big dogs – or Dawgs – Saturday, as the Vikings head up north for the Sundodger Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington at Lincoln Park in Seattle, Wash. The Vikings will race against the other Division I teams in the invitational sections of the women’s 6,000- and men’s 8,000-meter races. The women will race in the 6k invitational at 11 a.m. (PT), while the men will race the 8k invitational at 11:35 a.m. (PT). The race will be a step up in competition from the Vikings’ season opener at the John Frank Oregon State Invitational on Sept. 3. The University of Washington men enter their first home meet of the season ranked eighth nationally, while the UW women enter the meet ranked 11th nationally. The Vikings enter the meet on the back of a strong meet for the Vikings’ young runners at the OSU meet in Corvallis. Only one of the Viking women’s top seven runners at the OSU meet had more than a letter of experience within the Viking program. Sophomore Kaila Ann Gibson – one of those seven runners – led the Viking women with a 14th-place overall finish, with fellow sophomore Nevina De Luca right behind her at 15th overall. Freshman Demi Marine followed as the Viking women’s third runner, as she placed 22nd overall in her first race as a Viking. Freshman Michael Biedebach led the youthful Viking men’s team, which features seven freshmen among the team’s 11 runners. Biedebach placed fifth overall in his first collegiate race, finishing the 6,000-meter men’s race in 18:47.8 – just eight seconds behind Zach Carpenter’s school record of 18:39.45 from 2011. The young Viking men will have a tougher time Saturday, however, as the distance kicks up to 8,000 meters, much longer than the 6,000-meter race they ran at the OSU meet, and longer still than the standard boys high school distance of 5,000 meters. Junior Alex Cisneros will help the young Viking men at Saturday’s meet, as he races in his first meet of the season after missing the OSU meet due to a hand injury. Cisneros will be the Vikings’ top returning finisher from last year’s Sundodger Invitational, when he placed as the Viking men’s second runner at 29th overall. Cisneros has been near the top of the Vikings’ lineup throughout his Portland State career, and has led the Viking men at five of the 11 meets he’s run in as a Viking. MEET NOTES
HEAD COACH BRENT ERICKSEN Brent Ericksen assumed the leadership of the Portland State track & field and cross country programs on Aug. 10, 2015, and will enter his second year at the helm for the 2016-17 season. Ericksen led the Vikings to several individual successes in his first year at the helm in 2015-16, including multiple historic accomplishments. The Vikings won five Big Sky titles between the indoor and outdoor seasons, while the Vikings earned 19 All-Big Sky honors (1 cross country; 9 indoor; 9 outdoor), broke four school records, tied a Big Sky Championship meet record and had five athletes qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in 2015-16. Genna Settle qualified for the NCAA West prelims in the 100 and 200 meters, becoming just the fifth athlete to qualify for both events in the same season. Additionally, Settle nearly pulled out the 100-200 title sweep at the Big Sky outdoor meet, as she won the 100 and came within a hundredth of a second of winning the 200 as well. Settle won the 100 in 11.46 seconds, tying the Big Sky Championship meet record in the event and moving her up to third all-time at Portland State. Settle then broke the school record with her second-place finish in the 200 meters, finishing in 23.42 seconds to break the record former world outdoor qualifier Karene King set at 23.46 seconds in 2011. ChaQuinn Cook, meanwhile, became just the second Viking ever to sweep the Big Sky indoor and outdoor titles in the triple jump, as well as the first freshman ever to do so, and qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in the triple jump. Cook also hit the USATF Junior Outdoor Championship qualifying mark in the triple jump on the back of her Big Sky-winning mark of 4102.50 (12.56m). Amanda Boman also had a banner year in the distances, qualifying for the NCAA West prelims in the 10,000 meters, while also earning All-Big Sky honors in cross country and in the outdoor 5,000 meters. Boman’s All-Big Sky honors in cross country made her just the second Viking to earn All-Big Sky honors in cross country since 1999, joining Sarah Dean in 2013. Boman’s all-conference honors in the 5,000 meters also marked the longest distance at which any Viking had earned All-Big Sky honors, as she placed second in the event.

PSU’S HISTORY AT SUNDODGER INVITATIONAL: The Viking men and women competed in the Sundodger Invitational last season, which was the first time the Vikings had competed at the meet since 2012. The Vikings have competed at the Sundodger Invitational 10 times overall – all at Lincoln Park – including four straight seasons from 2003-06. The Viking men have twice finished third at the Sundodger Invitational, which stands as the team’s best finish ever. The Vikings placed third out of seven teams in 2003, and then followed it up with another third place finish out of 10 teams in 2004. Individually, Michael Devenport had the best finish by a Viking men’s runner in 2004, when he finished the 8,000-meter course 10th overall in 24:36.08, which also stands as the best time ever at by a Viking men’s runner at the meet. Alex Cisneros will be the Vikings’ top returning runner from last season, when he placed as the Vikings’ second runner at 29th overall – behind departed senior John Talik – in 25:33.25. The Viking women, meanwhile, had their best finish at the Sundodger come last season, when they placed in the top half of the team standings for the first time ever. The Viking women placed fourth out of nine teams at the meet, as All-Big Sky runner Amanda Boman led them with a 22nd-place overall finish in 21:39.11. Amber Rozcicha had the best individual finish by a Viking woman in 2012, when she placed 10th out of 67 runners in 21:20.24 – also the best time ever by a Viking women’s runner. Kaila Ann Gibson will be the Vikings’ top returning runner in the 2016 field, after placing as the team’s third runner in 2015 at 31st overall in 22:08.31. THE COURSE: The Sundodger Invitational will be contested at Lincoln Park once again, as it has every year the Vikings have competed at the meet. The 6,000-meter women’s course will make two loops over the course before an extended finishing loop. The 8,000-meter men’s course, meanwhile, will make three loops over the course before finishing with the same extended loop. The start and finish to the course will be on a grass playing field, while the rest of the course will be a mixture of grass, dirt, light gravel and bark chips. LOOKING AHEAD: The Vikings take another week off before competing in the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational, Oct. 1. The Viking men will run in the Cardinal 8k at 9:30 a.m. (PT), while the Viking women will run in the Cardinal 5k at 10:20 a.m. (PT).
