Head Coach Tracy Smith Tracy Smith, who was hired as the fifth head baseball coach in program history on June 24, 2014, led the Sun Devils to a postseason berth, a third-place finish in the Pac12 and 30-plus wins in his first season at ASU. He became one of five active coaches, and one of eight all-time, to bring three different Div. I schools to NCAA Regional play as he guided the Sun Devils to a No. 2 seed in the Fullerton Regional in 2015. His 639 victories rank in the top 50 among active coaches in the NCAA, and his 19 seasons represent the fourth-shortest number of years on the list. Smith instituted a change in culture at Arizona State and his demand for excellence both on and off the field was represented as the Devils led the Pac-12 in both allconference and all-academic honorees. His emphasis on defense became evident right away as ASU vastly improved its fielding percentage and lowered its number of errors committed in Smith’s first season. The Devils finished fourth in the Pac-12 in both categories in 2015 after ranking near the bottom of the conference from 2010-14. Smith earned National Coach of the Year honors and was a unanimous choice for Big Ten Coach of the Year after he led IU to the school’s only College World Series appearance in 2013. The following season in 2014, Smith led the Hoosiers to the No. 4 national seed in the NCAA Tournament, the first national seed in Big Ten baseball history. He tallied more than 40 wins in each of the past two seasons at IU and led the Hoosiers to consecutive Big Ten Conference Championships for the first time in school history. IU won the Big Ten regular season and B1G Tournament title in 2013, marking the school’s first regular season conference championship since 1949 and the first outright crown since 1932, and advanced to the 2013 College World Series, which ended the Big Ten’s 29-year CWS absence. Smith has established a reputation of evaluating and developing talent as more than 50 student-athletes since 2000 improved their stock in the Major League Baseball Draft under Smith’s tutelage, including four who became first-round draft picks after going undrafted out of high school. In 19 total years as a head coach, Smith has seen 63 of his players selected in the MLB Draft, including 56 draftees since 2000 and 27 in the first 10 rounds. He has mentored 31 Major League Baseball draft picks over the past seven seasons, including the fourth overall pick in the 2014 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft (Kyle Schwarber) and three first-round selections in the 2009 MLB June Draft (Eric Arnett, Josh Phegley, Matt Bashore). In nine years at the helm of Miami (Ohio) baseball program, Smith compiled eight straight 30-win seasons, two NCAA Regional appearances and advanced to the Mid-American Conference Tournament finals six times. He began his coaching career as head coach at Miami University-Middletown in 1990, served as an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) from 1993-94 and was the pitching coach at IU from 1995-96. A four-year letterwinner at Miami (Ohio), Smith was a pitcher and an infielder for the RedHawks, and played three minor league seasons in the Chicago Cubs organization.

Consistent Martinez Junior right-hander Seth Martinez is 4-2 on the year with seven quality starts in seven starts, and has allowed just eight earned runs as a starter in 49.2 innings this season after he began the season with a streak of 14 consecutive innings without giving up an earned run. He has a .204 opposing batting average with 46 strikeouts and a 1.05 WHIP, and has twice taken no-hitters into the fifth inning (at LBSU on Feb. 26, vs. UC Davis March 12). He made his debut as the team’s Saturday starter on Feb. 20, but assumed the Friday night role the following weekend against Long Beach due to Hever Bueno’s injury. He made two consecutive Friday starts before he moved to Saturday against UC Davis March 12 after earning the save in the 14th inning at Cal State Fullerton March 9, but moved back to the Friday role at Oregon State March 18. After making one relief appearance and a pair of midweek starts in the first three weeks of the 2015 season, he moved to the Friday night role March 6 against Long Beach State and started nine games before he moved to Sunday’s for the final series of the regular season. A Lion’s Share of the Offense Shortstop Colby Woodmansee and first baseman David Greer have accounted for at least 30 percent of the team’s offense this season, including 30 percent of hits, 32 percent of total bases, RBI, and runs, and 40 percent of extra-base hits. The duo is responsible for more than 52 combined runs created (26.21 for Greer, 26.88 for Woodmansee), including more than 10 each per nine innings. Additionally, the pair lead the team in OPS (on-base plus slugging) at a .966 clip for Greer and a 1.024 clip for Woodmansee. From the Back to the Front Right-handed pitcher Eder Erives, who leads the team with three saves and has 48 career relief apperances, including 10 this season, moved into the starting role for the first time in his career on April 2 at Washington State and struck out a career-best 11 in a career-long seven innings to earn the win. Finding A Left Fielder, Replacing a Leadoff Hitter The Devils lost all three starting outfielders to the 2015 MLB Draft and have used six players this season to try to fill the void in left field, including catcher Brian Serven and infielder David Greer, as well as four different outfielders. The Devils also lost their leadoff hitter, Johnny Sewald, to the 2015 draft, and have used six different players this season at that spot in the lineup. Freshman In The Outfield Freshman outfielder Gage Canning has started 22 games this season, including 21 in right field and one in center field, and is on pace to be the fifth ASU freshmen in the past 15 years to start the majority of the season in the outfield, joining Matt Newman (39 games in 2008), JJ Sferra (56 games in 2005), Colin Curtis (57 games in 2004), and Travis Buck (64 games in 2003). Shaps Finds A Spot Sophomore Andrew Shaps entered the 2016 season with six total at-bats, one run scored and zero hits in zero starts. He has started all 26 games this year and ranks third on the team with 30 hits, including a teamhigh three triples, and ranks third with 18 runs scored and fourth with a .286 batting average. Utility Greer David Greer, who became a regular fixture in the lineup at third base when then-starting third baseman Dalton DiNatale was injured March 3, 2015, has started at three different positions in 2016 and made three appearances at pitcher. He has started 23 games at first base, two at third base and one in left field. Tied for the team lead with 37 hits, he has notched a hit in 57 of the past 72 games he has started, including 21 of 26 games this season. He is 1-1 on the mound this season (he made his first career appearace on the mound on March 6 in an 8-1 win against Eastern Michigan on March 6 and recorded the final out of the game on one pitch, threw two scoreless innings in a win at Cal State Fullerton March 9, and allowed three runs on two hits vs. Utah March 26 in a loss). Snow Building On Freshman Campaign Andrew Snow is third on the team in both hits with 30 and batting average at .319, and leads the team with four three-hit games, including three consecutive games (2/21-2/26). He hit .300 in 140 at-bats in his freshman season to become the 10th Sun Devil freshman in the past 10 years to finish the season with a .300 or higher batting average (min. 100 at-bats), joining current teammate RJ Ybarra, as well as former greats such as Ike Davis, Brett Wallace and Deven Marrero. Snow earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention honors and drove in the game-winning run on three seperate occasions, all in the seventh inning or later. #Woody Colby Woodmansee, who in 2015 became the first shortstop to lead the team in RBI since Jerry Maddox in 1975, and just the sixth ever (Maddox, 1975; Alan Bannister, 1972; Lenny Randle, 1968; Luis Lagunas, 1963; Roger Tomlinson, 1961), has picked up where he left off in 2016 as he leads the team with 22 RBI and 57 total bases. Also the team leader with 24 multi-hit games and 12 multi-RBI games in 2015, the first Sun Devil since Zack MacPhee in 2010 to do so, Woodmansee leads the team with seven multi-RBI games and 12 multi-hit games. He started all 58 games at shortstop in 2015, the first Sun Devil to start every regularseason game since James McDonald at second base in 2013, and has a hit in 66 of ASU’s past 84 games, including 21 of 26 games in 2016, and has reached base in 75 of them, including a streak of 20 straight to start 2016, dating back to the start of the 2015 season.
