ACADEMICS: • Academics are our student-athletes’ first priority. Do the best you can in the classroom so you have the opportunity to be the best you can be on the field. • To be eligible to play, you must be passing a minimum of 25 credit hours. • If any student-athlete is in need of extra classroom assistance after school, please make sure this is communicated to your coach. He/she will be supportive of your efforts to improve academically. The student-athlete will be required however to submit a pass from the tutor that day to verify her attendance.
2.)
ATTITUDE: • We will play as One. With One dream to be the best we can be. With One mission to support each other and to work together as One to reach our goals. We will succeed One game at a time when we follow these concepts. Supporting and respecting your teammates and coaching staff is an expectation. We are not individuals but a team. • There will be no talking down to or about a player or coach. This team succeeds only if we can play as a team. No one individual wins or loses games it is a cumulative effort. A warning will be issued by the coaches in the first violation of this rule. Repeat offenders will be issued a demerit for each subsequent violation of this rule and playing time may be limited for those who do not support their teammates as well as consequences of accumulated demerits outlined in Section 6. • No profanity will be tolerated. First violation will be a warning. Repeat offenders will be issued a demerit for each subsequent violation of this rule. Remember you represent your school, the team as well as yourself and your family.
3.)
ATTENDANCE POLICY: • If student-athlete is sick and will miss practice or a game, the student or parent must contact the coach via email or phone. • Please try to schedule all doctors’ appointments around games and practices. • If a practice or game is missed for an unexcused reason, the player will be suspended for 2 games and a coach/player/parent meeting will be held. A second unexcused absence will result in dismissal from the team. • All softball players should be present during spring break as we have games and practices scheduled. Players who are present get valuable playing time and exposure. We have games on Monday and Thursday during the break and we will consider not
practicing Tuesday, Friday and Saturday of the Spring Break week. Any absence for family trips etc, must be communicated to the coaching staff during tryouts so we can plan for game line-ups and practices. Remember you are competing for a position on each level of the program and the more you participate the better you get. 4.)
PRACTICE: • 100% effort is expected at each practice. • Be on time to practice each day. Being there 15 minutes early is being there on time! • All student-athletes are expected to help set up and put away equipment as scheduled. If you do not do your part in returning the equipment to the cage players will be issued a one-time warning and thereafter assessed a demerit that will be used in player evaluations by the coaches as well as the team discipline shown in section 6. • Players should dress appropriately and should have appropriate clothing for both indoor and outdoor practices. We very well may practice outside even if it is cold! Also, ALWAYS have a pair of sweatpants packed in the event we work on sliding or diving in practice. See our UNIFORM/EQUIPMENT SUGGESTED/REQUIRED PURCHASES 2016 document for other equipment needs. Players should always have all their equipment with them if they don’t have their gloves or shoes they will sit out the practice and receive a warning for the first violation and thereafter receive a demerit for not being prepared. This includes all approved medications such as inhalers, if they don’t have them then they will sit and receive a warning and thereafter a demerit for not being prepared. No student shall use another’s medications in line with policy and violators will be referred to the Athletic Director for further action. • We expect players to participate in off season strength and conditioning if not in another sport or activity to reduce injuries and increase their performance. We also expect players to participate in our Monday Night Summer League to increase their skill levels. Preparation for participating in a sport starts before the season begins and helps prepare the athlete for the season and for college level sports programs which run year round if that is their goal for the future.
5.)
GAMES: • Buses will transport players to and from away games during the season. Players will need to be dressed and ready with their equipment bags to leave at the assigned time. It is expected that all players travel to and from the games on the bus with their teammates. If a player needs to be taken home by a PARENT/GUARDIAN (only) for whatever reason, the player must submit a signed note from the parent/guardian to the Athletic Office 48 hrs in advance. Permission will be given on a case by case basis. • Uniforms are only to be worn during competition. Please take good care of them. • Uniform shirts must be tucked into jersey pants on the field. • Dress for the weather. Always have a black turtle-neck or Under Armor, North sweatshirt, knit hat and/or a jacket packed in your equipment bag. Also small blankets and gloves for the bench are suggested. • It is expected that all softball players represent Woodstock North High School with dignity and class on and off of the field. Profanity, taunting opponents, yelling at umpires, and throwing equipment is not permitted and will result in consequences under IHSA rules and in further team and/ or school discipline. • Always hustle on and off the field - Bench personnel run the sidelines between innings. • IHSA rules prohibit anyone except team personnel from being in the dugout (bench area). Please respect this rule and if parents need to communicate or pass equipment to a player please do it through the coaching staff between innings from outside the fence.
6.)
• • •
Violations will be reported the Athletic Director for further handling under School and IHSA rules • While it is paramount to support your child during games we ask that you refrain from the temptation of coaching them on the field. The team has set plays for situations or techniques we want used and may have positioned a player a certain way to execute them. Your coaching from outside the fence only causes distractions for the players as they must choose who to listen to. In the end the coaches have responsibility for the players on the field and if you impact coaching decisions we have to evaluate the players playing time based on how they execute their coach’s instructions. PLAYING TIME: There is no guaranteed playing time. We will make an effort to get each student-athlete into every game, but our focus is to be competitive and to prepare the JV and freshman players for the varsity level. Playing time will be determined by the three A’s- attitude, attendance, and ability as well as by the number of demerits the player has accumulated Any playing time concerns should be discussed with the head coach and done so in the following manner 1) player should meet with the coach(s) after a practice . If they are not satisfied with this meeting they should 2) schedule a meeting with their parents and the coach(s) to be held before or after a practice and 3) if this does not answer the question they should arrange through the coach for a meeting of all parties with the Athletic Director. All discussions must be had in a civilized manner and only concerning the player not other players and no discussions will be had before or after any game. . Demerits will be discussed with players as they are issued, parents will be advised of demerits after two are issued to a player. 4 demerits will result in a one game suspension, 6 demerits will result in dismissal from the team. Starting line-ups are discussed and set for each level by the TEAM of coaches. There is never just one coach responsible for a line up. Players may be asked to move up or down a level at any given time due to injuries, absences, to work on specific skill sets or due to their outstanding play/ or if they are in need of improvement. We are looking for players that are flexible and willing to do what is in the best interest of the program and their own play.
Athlete and Parent/Guardian signature is required for participation. Please read over the contract, sign, and submit to your coach by Monday, March 7th. I have read, understand, and accept the School District 200 Athletic Code and the 2016 WNHS Softball Team Expectations.
