@USCWaterPolo THIS WEEK No. 2 USC women’s water polo has a busy week ahead, setting up for a midweek scrimmage against the Brazilian National Team before heading into its first tournament competition of the year at the Triton Invitational. First, USC will line up against current sophomore goalie Victória Chamorro’s own national team for a 5 p.m. scrimmage against Brazil on Wednesday (Feb. 10). Then, the Trojans (2-0) set up camp in La Jolla, Calif., as one of 16 teams engaged in action at the Triton Invitational. No. 2 USC is in a bracket with No. 17 Indiana, No. 19 UC San Diego and Santa Clara and will open up with an 8 a.m. matchup against the Broncos on Saturday (Feb. 13) morning. A win there would put USC up against the UCSD-Indiana winner at 2:40 p.m. that same afternoon. If the Trojans get through Saturday with a pair of wins, they’ll head into the semifinals on Sunday (Feb. 14) at 12:30 p.m. The tournament championship game is set for 5:50 p.m. that evening, preceded by the third-place game at 4:30 p.m. — all at UC San Diego’s Triton Pool USC IN THE RANKINGS USC opened 2016 ranked No. 3 in the national preseason poll and at No. 2 in the MPSF preseason poll. In this week’s poll, the Trojans have moved up to rank No. 2 in the nation. TRITON INVITATIONAL NOTES This year’s edition of the competitive Triton Invitational features 16 teams, including three MPSF teams in USC, UCLA and Arizona State. The teams will open up action playing through four-team brackets, designated as follows: Bracket A: #1 UCLA, #16 LMU, #18 San Diego State, Sonoma State Bracket B: #2 USC, #17 Indiana, #19 UC San Diego, Santa Clara Bracket C: #5 Arizona State, #11 UC Santa Barbara, #21 Marist, #25 Cal State East Bay Bracket D: #7 UC Davis, #9 UC Irvine, #22 Long Beach State, #25 Cal State Northridge On Sunday, semifinals and placement games will be held. Last year, the Trojans went undefeated at the 2015 Triton Invitational. USC beat Cal State East Bay 22-4 and Long Beach State 15-1 on the first day and then topped Cal State Northridge 19-3 in the semifinals and UC Irvine 10-5 in the title match. Follow along at the 2016 Triton Invitational page: www. ucsdtritons.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=5800&ATCLID=210685892 LAST WEEK USC picked up two big wins last week in its first official competition of the year. In the Trojans’ home opener on Friday night, they whipped up a 17-4 win over UC San Diego, shining in their home pool and getting three Trojans on the scoresheet with hat tricks to kick off the 2016 campaign. The Women of Troy peeled out to a 4-0 lead on goals from four different players. Stephania Haralabidis rang up the first official USC goal of the year on her way to an eventual hat trick. Hayley McKelvey punched one through next, followed by blasts from Nikki Stansfield and Annika Jensen in USC’s well-rounded offensive onslaught out of the gates. UC San Diego would get one to go on a power play, but the Trojans reloaded and regrouped from there. Goalie Victória Chamorro and her USC defense would shut out the Tritons for the next 10-plus minutes of action. Meanwhile, USC piled on five more goals to hold a 9-1 advantage at halftime. Freshman Amanda Longan stepped into the cage for the second half of action, and the USC offense would continue to click. Another four USC goals were pinned up on the board as Brigitta Games gathered in her second and third of an eventual four goals in the game. Stansfield and Haralabidis each tacked up another for

There, Avery Peterson would close out her hat trick on the day, as would Haralabidis, while the Trojans finished off a decisive 17-4 victory. The next night, USC surged to victory at Whittier, topping the Poets 28-2 to bump the Trojans’ record to 2-0 to start the year. Led by junior Avery Peterson’s six-goal game, USC registered six Trojans with three or more goals, while two Trojans tallied the first goals of their career. USC utilized a secondperiod shutout to help secure compete control of the game. After Whittier finished up the first with a score to make it 8-2, the Trojans rattled off eight unanswered goals in the next eight minutes. By halftime, three Trojans would weigh in with hat tricks, led by a four-goal effort by Avery Peterson in the first half of action. In building a 16-2 lead at the half, USC had gotten eight different Trojans in on the scoring, while freshman goalie Amanda Longan held court in the cage. Fellow freshman Mackenzie Flath would tally her first career goal during the first-half scoring frenzy as well. Longan would give way to senior Alegra Hueso in goal for the second half, and USC’s offense continued to click. In the third frame, Ioanna Haralabidis served three goals all her own as USC kept its foot on the gas. Brigitta Games tallied two more goals around a save from Hueso, and USC was rolling right along to a 22-2 advantage entering the fourth frame. There, Annika Jensen would complete the first hat trick of her young Trojan career, become the sixth USC player to hit three or more in tonight’s game. Peterson, meanwhile, would make it a career day for herself as well, rifling in her fifth goal of the night to build up a 24-2 USC lead. Soon after, freshman Courtney Fahey rang up her first goals as a Trojan with back-to-back strikes. Peterson would forge on in wrapping the game with one last goal for a 28-2 final. USC had scored 20 straight unanswered goals to finish out the win. BY THE NUMBERS Through the first two games of 2016, USC has outscoring opponents 45-6, leading the MPSF in offense (22.5 gpg) and in defense (3.0 gapg). Junior Avery Peterson is the top scorer to date with 9 goals — thanks to a career-high 6 scores tallied at Whittier to put her in reach of last season’s scoring total of 13 goals. Next in line in scoring this year is junior Brigitta Games with 7 goals, followed by Stephania Haralabidis with 6, Ioanna Haralabidis with 5 and Annika Jensen with 4. Stephania Haralabidis now ranks No. 15 all-time in career scoring at USC with 128 career goals. On the defensive end, freshman goalie Amanda Longan capped up for two periods in both games, making a total of 8 saves and allowing 5 goals. Returning All-American goalie Victória Chamorro played two frames, making 4 saves and allowing one goal, while senior Alegra Hueso stepped in for 5 saves and no goals allowed in her two periods vs. Whittier.
INTERNATIONAL INFLUENCES The overall young Trojans have garnered plenty of international experience on the way into this 2016 campaign for USC. Incoming freshman goalie Amanda Longan won gold with Team USA at the 2015 FINA Junior World Championships, where several other Trojans were competing with their respective countries. The Haralabidis sisters, Ioanna and Stephania were in action with Greece; goalie Victória Chamorro capped up for Brazil; and Hayley McKelvey was a high scorer for Canada. CAGE FIGHTERS USC’s goalkeeping corps this season is ferociously deep. Sophomore Victória Chamorro set a freshman goalie record last season in hauling in 207 saves in her first year as a Trojan. This year, she’s joined by freshman Amanda Longan, who was named Top Goalkeeper at the 2015 FINA Junior World Championships during the summer. Added veteran experience comes from senior captain Alegra Hueso, who has appeared in 27 games during her first three seasons as a Trojan. Even more depth between the pipes comes from junior Melanie Slater and sophomore Nicola Gonzales.

power Brigitta Games. The Haralabidis twins earned All-American status last season as well. OH CAPTAINS, MY CAPTAINS The most experienced player in the pool this In all, USC returns 11 members of last season’s season is junior Avery Peterson — one of three 16-player NCAA roster. • Trojan captains for 2016. Sophomore Brianna Daboub and senior Alegra Hueso also have been selected as team captains for the year. Peterson weighs in as the veteran of the group in that she has logged the most playing time of the bunch. With 20 goals to her name as a Trojan, the 2-meter power was in the water for USC’s last two NCAA Tournament runs. Daboub may just be a sophomore, but her savvy helps her stand out as another key leader for the Trojans this season. She scored 27 goals as a freshman and was named to the 2015 MPSF All-Newcomer Team. A senior, Hueso has been at Troy since her freshman season in 2013, when USC won its last NCAA Championship. 2016 TROJANS AT A GLANCE The Women of Troy take aim at their 2016 campaign under the direction of head coach Jovan Vavic for the 22nd season. The USC women are looking to extend a streak of 12 straight trips to the NCAA Tournament, and the talent is certainly there to make a strong run at a title. Picked No. 2 in the MPSF Preseason Coaches Poll, the Trojans weigh in just a point behind top-picked Stanford. Both the Trojans and the Cardinal each received three first-place votes, hinting at a heated race for the 2016 title to come. USC returns three of its top five scorers from 2015 — Stephania Haralabidis (64 goals), Ioanna Haralabidis (50 goals) and Melissa Bergesen (37 goals) — along with All-American goalie Victória Chamorro and All-American two-meter

Jovan Vavic, one of the most decorated water polo coaches in the country, serves a dual role as the head coach of both the USC men’s and women’s teams. He has been with the USC women’s program since its inception in 1995, and has led both teams to national championships three times in the same school year (1998-99, 2003-04 and 2009-10). A 12-time National Coach of the Year and 10-time MPSF Coach of the Year, Vavic boasts a grand total of 13 combined national titles — including a six-year run with the USC men — and has coached 10 Cutino Award winners. With 13 national championships (nine men’s and four women’s) won during his tenure at USC, Vavic has the most team titles of any USC head coach in history. Vavic’s 2015 women’s team reached the NCAA Tournament for the 12th straight season, taking third place for the second straight season and ending with a 24-6 overall record on the year. That mark improved Vavic’s overall career record on the women’s side to 490-142 (.775) as he now enters his 22nd season as the USC’s women’s head coach. In the calendar years of 2013 and 2010, Vavic swept both sides of the game, winning national championships with the women in the spring and following that with men’s titles in the fall of those years. In 2013, the Women of Troy won the longest NCAA women’s championship game in history, beating Stanford 10-9 in triple sudden death to claim USC’s fourth national championship on the women’s side, while finishing with a 27-1 overall record. The USC men would follow with a historic feat of their own, winning an unprecedented sixth straight national championship in claiming the 2013 crown. In 2010, the USC women and men went back-to-back as Vavic followed 2010 National and MPSF Coach of the Year awards on the women’s side with 2010 National and MPSF Coach of the Year with the men in leading the Trojan men to their third consecutive national championship. Following the USC men’s 2009 NCAA title and the USC women’s run to the 2010 national championship, Vavic saw two Trojans sweep the Cutino Awards for the third time in his career, as J.W. Krumpholz and Kami Craig went back-to-back as the 2009 and 2010 Cutino Award winners following the USC women’s run to the 2010 NCAA Championship. The first Trojan pair to sweep the awards was Juraj Zatovic and Lauren Wenger in 2006. Since 1999 when the program was fully funded, Vavic’s record is 401-69 (.853), including 11 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. Between 2003 and 2010, Vavic was named either MPSF or National Coach of the Year (or both) every year but one. His 2004 women’s team won the national championship and became the first team in NCAA Championship history to go undefeated (29-0). In 1999, 2004 and 2010, Vavic was named the women’s National and MPSF Coach of the Year. Vavic oversaw the team’s move from Division II in 1995 to Division I in 1996. He guided USC to its first-ever Division I National Collegiate Championships appearance in 1997 and a seventh-place national finish while the 1998 team took fifth nationally. In 1999, USC won the national championship, and Vavic was named the National Coach of the Year and the MPSF Coach of the Year. The 2000 squad added another strong showing, finishing second nationally. Vavic came to USC in 1992 as an assistant men’s water polo coach, joined John Williams as co-head coach in 1995 and took over the men’s program in 1999 after Williams retired. He and Williams were named National Coaches of the Year in 1998 after leading USC to its first-ever national championship. They were also named MPSF Co-Coaches of the Year in 1996 after leading USC to the conference title. In fact, in the 1998-99 season, Vavic did something no other coach has accomplished as his teams won three national championships. Besides capturing the 1998 men’s and 1999 women’s titles, his 1999 men’s club team won the Men’s Senior National Club Championship. In 21 seasons at the helm of the USC men’s program, Vavic has improved his career coaching record on the men’s side to 494-82 (.858) with national championships won in 1998, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Vavic, a native of Yugoslavia, spent the 1990 season as an assistant men’s coach at UCLA. Previously, he coached three seasons (1987-1990) at Palos Verdes (Calif.) High, where he led Palos Verdes to two undefeated league seasons (1987-89). Vavic also served as assistant coach to the U.S. team at the 1995 World University Games, and was the head coach of the team in 2003. In November 2012, Vavic was named interim head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team, and led Team USA to World Championship qualification with success at the 2013 UANA World Aquatic Championship Qualification Tournament in Canada. Vavic graduated from UCLA in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He and his wife, Lisa, have four children: Nikola, Monica, Marko and Stefan. Nikola and Monica both played water polo for their father at USC and both won national championships with their respective USC water polo teams.
