SOFT HANDLING & PACKAGING
TRADITIONAL EXCELLENCE
At Polansky Seed we pride ourselves in being top stewards
The Polansky family tradition in the seed business is long and deep. In 1941, John Polansky grew,
sized and marketed certified hybrid seed corn. Real-world research testing has been a Polansky hallmark, starting with hand-planted hybrid corn tests in the 1940s, followed by wheat and sorghum testing beginning in the late 1950s. Our team has planted and harvested wheat variety trials for 57 consecutive years. Seeding rate trials and some of the first blends were evaluated and tested starting in the 1960s.
in the seed we process and ship. When seed is received, it is unloaded on a vibratory hopper, sending the seed to holding tanks sorted by variety, bin or the field they came from. In the fully-automated plant, computers control feeding the cleaner and other cleaning machines. With bin sensors and continuous cup elevators, each step of the process is automatically controlled to ensure the seed moves gently and efficiently. Continuous dust collection and separation recirculates clean air back into the facility.
Quality is something we do not take for granted. This is no exception when it comes to
seed wheat production. Every step in raising a pure seed crop at Polansky Seed is managed by professionals with a storied history of producing the highest quality seed wheat available. When Polansky Seed drills pull into each production field, they are cleaned and inspected. Crop and chemical rotations keep fields weed-free. Fields are monitored for weed and disease pressure throughout the growing season and fungicides are commonly used to protect plant health. Each acre of Polansky Seed production is walked, making certain the growing crop will meet and exceed state inspection standards. There is zero tolerance to any noxious, prohibited weeds or off-type plants.
Equipment and Technology in our Processing Plant
Before any harvest equipment enters a field, it is cleaned thoroughly. Combines are cleaned before leaving each field and flushed clean when entering. Trucks and grain carts are kernel free. All grain handling equipment is fitted with reverser kits to ensure 100% positive clean-out. Storage units are swept and vacuumed free of debris and sprayed inside and out to prevent stored grain insects. Extreme care in purity and quality of product is managed every step of the way. With the addition of our multi-million dollar seed cleaning facility in 2015, we installed the industry’s leading technologically advanced equipment, including color sorting technology. Polansky Seed will continue to offer the best quality products to customers today and in future generations.

FORAGE SORGHUM
FORAGE SORGHUM
Forage Sorghum Types
Key Terminology
Forage Sorghum Numbering System
Sorghum Sudangrass: Cross between Sudan and forage sorghum that can be used for pasture, hay or silage
Brown Midrib (BMR): Low lignin, highly digestible top quality sorghum
119
Photo-Period Sensitive (PPS): Plants remain in vegetative growth stage depending on day length and light
Forage Sorghum: High yielding sorghum used for silage and baling
Brachitic Dwarf (BY): Reduced internodes with very high leaf to stalk ratios, superior standability and great tonnage
Millet: Ideal grazing choice due to very low prussic acid levels
Male Sterile (MS): Produces no anthers and thus no pollen for grain production Prussic Acid: Form of hydrocyanic acid in the new re-growth of sorghum-type plants that can cause severe poisoning in livestock

Benefits of Cover Crops
• Superior, deep penetrating taproot • Reduces soil compaction • Builds organic matter • Improves nutrient recycling
3 Ways Key Ingredients are Lost from Soils: 1. Evaporation 2. Transpiration 3. Run-off
Nitrogen Management: Cover crops can enhance Nitrogen production and/or reduce leaching. Overseed legume cover into corn, frost-seed into wheat or late summer-seed, to provide Nitrogen for future crops. Grasses can be used to take up excess Nitrogen and reduce the potential for groundwater leaching.
3 Ways Cover Crops Save Key Ingredients: 1. Deep, wide roots help increase moisture penetration through otherwise compact soils. 2. Cover on the fields when there is usually no cover present will keep the soils cooler. 3. Moisture and soil holding capacity increase more with live plants than bare ground.
Erosion Control: Cover crops can be used to reduce wind and water erosion. Maintaining ground cover through fall, winter and early spring drastically reduce soil loss.
Hairy Vetch
Improve Soil Quality: Cover crops enhance soil structure while increasing soil biological activity. They reduce soil compaction while increasing water percolation and retention. Cover crops help soils maintain a higher organic matter level than continuous row cropping without cover. They also improve soil aggregation, infiltration and bulk density.
• Ability to fix large quantities of nitrogen • Produces high biomass • Winterhardy • Provides a weed suppressing mulch for no-till corn and other crops
More Than Just Soil Conditioning: 1. Reduced soil loss from erosion 2. Weed pressure suppression 3. More dollars per pound with return on grazing
Pastures: Cover crops can be used as a forage crop and feed source.

Weed Suppression: Cover crops can play a role in managing weeds by shading and interfering with weed germination and establishment. Insect Management: Cover crops will play an important role in future biological insect control. They increase activity in the soil by giving more matter for the biological activity.
Notes
