July 2017 Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians, Greetings from Palmyra High School, it has been a busy summer here and I hope this letter finds you and your family enjoying your summer! The maintenance staff and student workers have been doing a phenomenal job getting the building ready, and it looks great. Below you can find important dates and information, please take the time to read all the information enclosed. Additional information will be discussed during the first day of school. PARKING LOTS As a reminder, before school drop-off and after school pick-up by parents is to be done on the south side of the building. The north lot by the tennis courts is exclusively for school buses before and after school. Also, when departing the parking lot after picking up your child during dismissal time, if you are going toward town, please use the north exit of the lot and if you are heading south in the direction of the Hannibal Clinic, then please use the south exit of the parking lot. REGISTRATION Online registration will be available starting July 19. Please make sure your student has completed all forms online before their registration day in August to receive their locker assignment and/or parking permit. Please enter the school on the south side of the building using the high school office door. Any student may pick up a school lock for their locker in the office. FRESHMAN AND NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION Freshman and new student registration/orientation will be held on Tuesday, August 8th in the high school gym. Registration/Orientation will begin at 5:30pm. After a brief introduction from Mrs. Tiemann and myself, students will be divided up in to groups and go around the building visiting with the freshman teachers. Locker assignments will be issued at orientation, if you want a locker next to a friend you must sign-up together at registration. Lockers cannot be held. DRIVERS AND PARKING PERMITS Drivers that have their online registration complete can purchase a parking tag in the high school office. Permit cost is $3 and permit must be placed on the lower left driver’s side windshield. Students must park in student designated parking areas and spots will be on a first come basis each morning. Students are prohibited from parking in staff, visitor, or no parking areas. Students should only apply for a permit once they have their license and will be driving to school. CELL PHONES and OTHER TECHNOLOGICAL DEVICES Cell Phones and other technological devices will be allowed for use only during passing periods in the hallway or during student’s designated lunch shift in the lunchroom. Students must obtain permission from teachers or administration for use during non-designated times and locations.

TECHNOLOGY This year we will be increasing our movement towards the use of technology. Every student district wide will be issued their own iPad for school use. The increase in technology is viewed by the school board, administrators, and teachers as a way to increase learning for our students. It is also a way to allow our students to remain competitive with students from all over the state and country. The use of these new technology devices will not be the only teaching strategies our teaching staff will use throughout the course of the year. The iPads are going to be used where they may enhance a lesson or concept that is being taught. If you are interested in more information, feel free to contact the high school office or come to our informational night August 17th at 5:30pm. Also updated for this school year is the school website. If you have not looked at it yet check it out with the enhanced features (www.palmyra.k12.mo.us). We also have a school app available to download from the App Store or Play Store, just search Palmyra R1 to find the application. SCHOOL CLOTHING As students are browsing the new styles for their back-to-school wardrobe, they are reminded to make modest choices. The dress code for the 2017-2018 school year is essentially the same as in years past. The biggest issues with dress code in the recent past are yoga/exercise pants and short shorts for girls and cutoff shirts and hats for boys. Please dress appropriately according to the student handbook. LUNCH The cost of lunch at the high school this year is $2.25, breakfast $1.50. Please note that students are able to purchase extras from the lunchroom that will be an additional charge to their account. Please note: A negative lunch balance is a violation of Palmyra Student Citizenship Standards and may prevent your student from attending extracurricular activities, including but not limited to, school sporting events, field trips, dances, etc... Please contact the high school office at 573-769-2067 if you have any questions or if you would like to inquire about the "Free and Reduced" lunch program. Every student will be issued a student ID that is also to be used for their lunch card. They must use this card to get their lunch every day. Lost cards can be replaced for a cost of $5.00. Student ID’s for the 2017-2018 school year will not be issued until August 23rd. If you have your lunch card from last year, please bring that to school to be used until the new ID’s can be issued. School starts Wednesday, August 16th. The tardy bell will ring at 8:11am. The first day of school will be a regular scheduled day with dismissal at 2:59pm. Let’s have a great year. Please contact me at your convenience if you have any questions or comments. Sincerely,

Jared Pontius Palmyra High School Principal
