2017 Advanced Academics Summer Assignment AP Chemistry Dayton High School Bonnie Smith [email protected]

Due 08/18/17 – Lab Safety Contract Due 08/25/17 – Alice in Quantumland Summary Due 08/28/17 – Memorized Elements & Ions Welcome to AP Chemistry! You will quickly notice that things will be different than they were in Pre-AP Chemistry. For one, you must memorize a lot of the information that was given to you on the Chemistry Reference Tables. This assignment will help us gain an understanding of quantum theory (why atoms behave the way they do) and memorize that key information that you will need so that we can hit the ground running in August. A large part of AP Chemistry is constantly asking “why?” things happen. The structure of the course involves lots of examples together, textbook practice, labs that take multiple days to complete, quizzes, and exams. The AP Chemistry course is a 2nd year chemistry course that is designed to provide students with the equivalent of first year COLLEGE CHEMISTRY course. It is designed for college-bound students who either would like to earn college credit (by AP examination) or would like to prepare for college chemistry while in high school. This is accomplished through an intensive, in-depth approach. This course is structured around the six big ideas in the AP Chemistry curriculum framework provided by the College Board.   

Big Idea 1: Structure of matter Big Idea 2: Properties of matter Big Idea 3: Chemical reactions

  

Big Idea 4: Rates of chemical reactions Big Idea 5: Thermodynamics Big Idea 6: Equilibrium

It is highly recommended that the student take the College Board’s Advance Placement test in Chemistry, but the grade earned in the class is independent of the Advanced Placement test. •

What supplies will I need? • Large 3-ring Binder w/5 Dividers (Calendars, Notes, Bookwork, Lab Handouts, Exams) • Large Spiral Notebooks (Lab Reports) • Notebook Paper (Bookwork) • Scientific Calculator • TI-36X Pro is strongly recommended, but not required • Available from Amazon.com for about $18.85 • Alice in Quantumland novel • Amazon.com, Barnes & Nobles, etc. have it for about $15.00 • Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam AP Test prep book • Amazon.com, Barnes & Nobles, etc. have it for about $12.23 • Highly recommended by 2016-17 AP Chemistry Students

Assignment #1 Summer Reading: Alice in Quantumland (1st Test Grade) • Must be purchased on your own, but is available from the following online sources: • Amazon.com, Barnes & Nobles, etc. have it for about $15.00 About the book… “In this cleverly conceived book, physicist Robert Gilmore makes accessible some complex concepts in quantum mechanics by sending Alice to Quantumland-a whole new Wonderland, smaller than an atom, where each attraction demonstrates a different aspect of quantum theory. Alice unusual encounters, enhanced by illustrations by Gilmore himself, make the Uncertainty Principle, wave functions, the Pauli Principle, and other elusive concepts easier to grasp.” – Amazon.com summary

Reflective Summary Paper • Write a reflective summary of the concepts of quantum mechanics discussed in the book. Summarize each chapter using 2-5 sentences each and write a conclusion that answers the noted questions. • Chapter Summaries (2-5 sentences each)  Into Quantumland  The Heisenberg Bank  The Mechanic’s Institute  The Copenhagen School  The Fermi-Bose Academy  Virtual Reality  Atoms in the Void  Castle Rutherford  The Particle MASSquerade  The Experimental Physics Phun Phair • Conclusion  How is human behavior like electron behavior?  How did reading Alice in Quantumland change your ideas about the behavior of matter, especially atoms?  What was your favorite chapter, scientist, or concept? Why? • Paper must be single spaced with 12 point times new roman font and use proper grammar and punctuation. • Email completed paper to [email protected] by August 25, 2017. • Students will also be assigned chapters during the 3rd week of school to be presented in class using mosaics (picture summaries.)

Assignment #2 Memorization: Elements & Ions • Many of these you will already know, but making flashcards is helpful! • There will be a quiz during the 3rd week of school (8/28-9/1). • Element Names and their corresponding symbols •

Ionic charges of the basic ions • •

Memorize the element symbols and names (with correct spelling) for elements #1-86 (exclude elements #58-71). Periodic Group charges – Think about the valance electrons! Transition Metal charges: • Zn = +2, Ag = +1, Cu = +1 or +2, Fe = +2 or +3, Sn = +2 or +4, Pb = +2 or +4

Polyatomic Ion Names and Charges •

Pay attention to prefixes, endings, etc.

Assignment #3 Read & Sign: Lab Safety Contract  Lab Safety Contract on DHS webpage. • Read the Flinn Scientific’s Student Lab Safety Contract. You will always be expected to follow all safety rules in the science laboratory. • Print your name at the top of the front side of the contract. • Answer the 3 Questions on the back about vision and allergies. • You and your parent must sign and date the back. • This must be turned in by the 2nd day of school – August 18, 2017 – if you plan to participate in the lab scheduled for that date.

You will turn in ONLY the Lab Safety Contract on the 2nd day of school – August 18, 2017. The book summary needs to be emailed to me by August 25, 2017. The element symbols, names, and ions quiz will be given during the 3rd week of school. Be sure to complete all of this work BEFORE school starts. Make sure you read and understand the expectations. If you have any questions, feel free to come see me before school is out or email me over the summer. I look forward to meeting you in the fall, Mrs. Bonnie Smith Pre-AP & AP Chemistry Science National Honor Society Sponsor

Polyatomic Ions A mastery of the common ions, their formulas and their charges, is essential to success in AP Chemistry. You are expected to know all of these ions. You will always be allowed a periodic table, which makes identifying the ions on the left “automatic.” There will be a quiz on these and the element names during the 3rd week of school.
