Avon Challenger Little League Baseball
Challenger Little League baseball is a program for girls and boys ages 5-18 years old that have physical, developmental or mental disabilities. No experience is required to play. A baseball glove and their selves is all the player needs to bring to have a great time. Uniforms, helmets, bats and baseballs are covered by the $60.00 registration fee. This fee can be reduced or waived for those who need financial assistance. Each player receives a participation trophy from the league at the end of the season and the player is eligible to play in the State Challenger Tournament later in the summer. All games are non-competitive, no scores or statistics are recorded. Every player on a team bats and plays in the field each inning with help from coaches and buddies (typical developing peers) as necessary. A typical game lasts two to three innings depending on the number of players and the weather. Players hit from the tee or are pitched to by the coaches, depending on the child’s skill level. A T-ball baseball is used for safety purposes. Our season will open early to mid-May and will run through July. All games will be played on Sunday afternoon at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Avon. There are no games on Mothers’ or Fathers’ Day. This is a great opportunity for a child with specials needs to play in sport, have fun and meet new friends. 2017 registration will open soon for children living in Lorain County and western Cuyahoga County. Wanted: Challenger Buddies Challenger Baseball is always looking for buddy volunteers. We need buddies (kids and young adults ages 10-20 who don’t have disabilities) to assist a special needs player. A buddy’s responsibility may be to push a wheelchair, hold a bat, help swing a bat, encourage their player to pick up the ball, to run the bases, etc. But the most important thing a buddy can do is talk to our players and make friends.
