CLS Dalian Topical Course China’s Environmental Issues This course, conducted entirely in Chinese, is a research-based course that aims to improve student understanding of the environmental issues faced by modern China, their effects on local residents, and efforts made by the Chinese government and local NGOs to improve the status quo. Students will be divided into groups and asked to discuss environmental issues in class, collect information through authentic news sources and field interviews and surveys, and complete a project report in Chinese with guidance from the instructor. The curriculum also includes a visit to a local environmental protection enterprise and meetings with the Dalian University of Technology Student Environmental League. This course is not required, and students will not receive academic credit for participation. Students who choose to opt-in to this course can expect a time commitment of 1.5 hours per week in class in addition to homework. Homework may include assignments such as reading articles to prepare for an in-class discussion, doing online research or field interviews, collaborate with group members on the final project report, or other tasks as assigned by the instructor.
