2017 Dunlap Eagles Varsity Baseball Tryouts -Tryouts will be held from Monday, February 27 thru Wednesday, March 1 at the DAC. Unless you have a family emergency, are ill, or are still involved in a winter sport, you are expected to attend all tryout sessions. Players involved in a winter sport will have 3 days of tryouts once their winter sport is concluded. They are expected to attend practice the day following the end of their winter season. See the attached schedule for the first few weeks of tryouts/practices. All Gold Cards distributed by the athletic department must be turned in to Coach Hatch or Coach Olson prior to tryouts, No exceptions will be made! Please be aware that players that will best contribute to the overall success of the program will make the team, and earn the most playing time. Some players, i.e. pitchers and catchers, may make the team to fulfill a particular role, but may only play when that role is needed. Aside from talent and ability, a player's summer ball involvement, Volt athletic workouts commitment, pre-season workouts/conditioning attendance, and in and out of school behavior will be considered when making cuts. During the tryout period, players will be evaluated using a point system, in the areas of pre-season workout participation, hitting, throwing, fielding, and base running. Once players have made the team, they will be required to pay the $100 athletic fee, if they have not done so for a prior sport this year. Physicals/Athletic Code Meeting -All players interested in trying out must have a current physical on file with the high school office. Physicals are valid for one calendar year from the date when the physical was given. No player can tryout or practice until providing proof of a physical. Athletes at Dunlap are expected to follow the Athletic Code established by the Dunlap High School Staff and approved by the District #323 Administration and Board of Education. He must also have attended an athletic code meeting before tryouts begin. Appearance and equipment -After the squad has been selected, all players must be neatly shaven and have hair trimmed to a length that doesn't affect their play. Players are expected to come prepared to all practices with adequate indoor and outdoor clothing, gloves and shoes/cleats. They must wear a Dunlap hat, and are required to wear long sleeves and sweat pants in all outdoor practices until otherwise told by the coaches. (This includes tryouts). Players that forget their gear or wear inappropriate gear will do extra conditioning. No jewelry should be worn at practice or at games. If a player is using his own bat, remember IHSA rules state the difference between the length of the bat and its weight cannot be more than 3 ounces. Example: if a bat is 32 inches long, it cannot weigh less than 29 ounces. All bats must be stamped with appropriate BBCOR seal of approval. Players are responsible for their own equipment, and are expected to take proper care of team equipment. Mistreatment of equipment shows a display of disrespect and poor sportsmanship. Throwing of bats, helmets, etc. during games and practices out of frustration, or for any reason is unacceptable behavior and will be penalized. Team uniforms are never to be worn in practice. Players are responsible for cleaning their own uniforms between games. Please wash these separately and line-dry them. The individual player is responsible for any damage to his uniform that results from improper care. Games, practices, and general behavior – Games are scheduled during the week and the weekends. Conference games are played on Mondays and Wednesdays. The make-up date for a conference game is Thursday. Games (including conference) are scheduled over the spring break. It is expected that any player trying out for the team knows he has an obligation to practice and play during spring break. Those that anticipate a conflict during that time are encouraged not to try out. Any player who misses a game over the spring break will miss 2 games for every game missed, once they return. An athlete must be in school at least 1/2 day preceding a scheduled event. Coaches will be checking the attendance sheets. If an athlete is suspended from school, he is also suspended from all practices and games during that time. These are considered unexcused absences.

Practices are extremely important to the success of our team. You will be expected to be dressed and ready to practice by the time specified by your coach. Repeated tardiness to practice (more than 2) will be counted as an unexcused absence. Each player is expected to come to each practice and game with an enthusiastic attitude and a willingness to hustle, work hard and be competitive. The only excused absence from practice is an excused absence from school. All after school appointments, except those with a signed doctor’s excuse, are considered unexcused. Please make appointments that don’t interfere with practice! Work conflicts and detentions are also considered unexcused absences. If you miss practice because of vacation or family outings which you consider to be more valuable, don’t question the coach’s decisions on playing time. If a player is going to miss a practice or game and knows ahead of time, please contact the coach. The player, not the parent, should contact the coach. All players must remember that playing baseball is a privilege, not a right. Therefore, players are expected to be good students first and good baseball players next. They are to display good citizenship in school and in the community, both on and off the field. Behavior that is not in accordance with school policy, local law or any other act deemed not acceptable as proper team conduct by the coach or staff, will not be tolerated. Respect for the coaches, and fellow team members, is expected at all times on and off the field. Negative and disrespectful attitudes take away from team trust and cohesiveness of the team, and will never be accepted. Foul language will not be allowed. During games, players that are not physically participating in the game are to remain in the dugout area, staying as active mentally and verbally as possible, aware of the present game situation. All players are to encourage their fellow teammates, not taunt opposing teams. Visitors to the dugout (including parents) are not welcome. Players confronted by outsiders during a game are to politely ask them to leave until the game is over. Team members need to remain focused on the game without unnecessary distractions from the crowd. Players that choose not to be focused on the game will lose playing privileges for future games. Bus Transportation -Every player will ride the bus to all away games. It is your responsibility to check the bus schedule for departure times. Players are expected to focus on the game ahead in route to games. Players may ride home from an away game with a parent or legal guardian, providing that the parent signs the official “sign-out” sheet. Players may ride home with an adult other than their parent or legal guardian if they have a note from their parent or legal guardian giving permission to do so. Summary of Consequences -Failure to follow the policies mentioned in this handbook, will result in disciplinary action. A first offense will result in a warning and a possible penalty workout. A second offense will result in suspension of playing time from games and a possible penalty workout. A third offense will result in an indefinite suspension from the team or possible removal from the team. Ultimately, it is at the coaches' discretion to decide what other behavior, not specifically mentioned in this handout, is inappropriate and is not in accordance with school or team policy. This behavior may also be punishable as previously stated. Earning a Varsity Letter - Players that have participated in at least one third of all varsity innings played, or players that have specifically contributed to the overall success of the varsity team shall receive their varsity letter in baseball. * PARENTS: We greatly appreciate you, and thank you in advance for your support on and off the field. We firmly believe that a trusting relationship between coaches and parents greatly adds to our overall success. We kindly ask that you please respect our practice times and refrain from observing them as you would with other sports. We have a lot to accomplish in practice without unnecessary distractions. If you feel the need to speak with a coach concerning your son or any other matter, please set up a time that is convenient and fair to both of us. It is not fair to discuss confrontational matters directly before or after a game or practice.
