PLAYERS OF THE WEEK - WEEK 2 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - PETE GUERRIERO, MONMOUTH, RB, R-FR (LYNDHURST, N.J.)

Guerriero rushed 25 times for 189 yards and two scores in leading the Hawks to a 46-27 win over nationally-ranked Lehigh. His opening kickoff return for 70 yards set up MU’s first score, and a short time later he put the Hawks ahead 14-0 with a 71-yard TD run. With the game tied at 27-27 late in the third quarter, Guerriero capped an 8-play, 80-yard drive with his second touchdown of the day to give Monmouth the lead for good. In addition, he set a school record with 263 all-purpose yards.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - DIEGO ZUBIETA, MONMOUTH, LB, JR (NEWTON SQUARE, PA.)

Zubieta finished with a career-high 10 tackles (five solo, five assisted) with a half tackle-for-loss, a pass break-up and quarterback hurry against Lehigh. He made two stops for no gain -- including his assisted TFL -- during Goal-to-go situations in the first quarter. In the third quarter, Zubieta was involved in all three tackles that forced a three-andout and punt (MU would tie the game on the ensuing possession). His pass break-up and quarterback hurry came on separate 2nd-and-Goal plays that resulted in incompletions.

Probert was again perfect on his placekicks as he went a combined 10-of-10 (3 FG, 7 PAT) for 16 points in the Flames’ victory over Morehead State. He converted field goals of 33, 37 and 38 yards and averaged 63.4 yards on his 11 kickoffs, with four touchbacks. Armstrong was the Owls’ second-leading tackler in KSU’s victory over Tennessee Tech with nine total stops (seven solo, two assisted). In the second quarter, he recorded an 11-yard sack that forced a 3rd-and-23 situation, and later recovered a fumble in Kennesaw State territory that the Owls converted into a touchdown to close out the first half.

2017 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL LOOK WHO’S 2-0! Monmouth is 2-0 for the third time in four seasons as Big South members, as well as the seventh time in the program’s 25-year history. The Hawks will seek their first 3-0 start this Saturday for the first time since 2006 and fifth time overall. Liberty is also 2-0 to start the season, the Flames’ first 2-0 opening since 2010. LU is looking for its first 3-0 start since 2008. This is the 14th consecutive year at least one Big South squad has opened a season 2-0, and the first with two teams since 2015. MONMOUTH DOWNS NATIONALLY-RANKED LEHIGH Monmouth knocked off then-No. 19/19 Lehigh this past Saturday, 46-27, for its second-ever win over a nationally-ranked opponent (No. 22 Liberty in 2015) and first over a ranked non-conference foe. The Hawks’ 19-point win over Lehigh was the league’s largest margin of victory over a ranked non-conference opponent since the 2014 FCS Playoffs (+21 points). It is the fifth consecutive year that a Big South member has defeated a nationally-ranked FCS opponent in the regular-season. CALL IN THE CALVERTY Liberty sophomore QB STEPHEN CALVERT tied the Big South single-game record with five touchdown passes this past Saturday against Morehead State, which marked the ninth such occurrence in league history. Meanwhile, Calvert has set Big South records for most passing yards and passing TDs through the first two games of a season with 728 and eight, respectively. The previous bests were 631 passing yards by Presbyterian’s TIM WEBB in 2008, and six touchdown passes by Gardner-Webb’s NICK ROBERTS in 2004, Charleston Southern’s COLLIN DRAFTS in 2006 and Liberty’s MIKE BROWN in 2010. BIG TIME RUSH Monmouth redshirt-freshman RB PETE GUERRIERO has set the Big South record for most rushing yards after two games with 328. He bested the previous mark of 321 set by Liberty’s RASHAD JENNINGS in 2006. Guerriero has gained 139 and 189 yards, respectively in his first two appearances to become the first Big South freshman with back-to-back 100-yard rushing games since Presbyterian’s LANCE BYRD in 2009 -- as well as the first to do so to start a season since Stony Brook’s EDWIN GOWINS in 2008. UNLIMITED LONG DISTANCE Kennesaw State junior RB DARNELL HOLLAND rushed 84 yards for a touchdown this past Saturday against Tennessee Tech, the longest play from scrimmage in KSU’s young history and tied for the fourth-longest rush in Big South annals. Meanwhile, Presbyterian College redshirt-freshman TORRANCE MARABLE scampered 76 yards for a score this past weekend against The Citadel -the second-longest TD rush ever by a Big South frosh. That record is 83 yards by VMI’s MICHAEL RAINEY-WILES in 2007. RANK AND FILE The Big South has had a football squad nationally-ranked for 81 consecutive weeks, dating back to Week 9 of the 2011 season (Oct. 24). The conference has had two teams nationally-ranked in the same week now 40 times overall. 30 FOR 30 What if I told you that Monmouth scored 30 points in back-to-back games to open the season for just the second time in the program’s 25-year history -- and the first since 2004? Meanwhile, the Hawks amassed 351 rushing yards against Lehigh this past Saturday, their most rushing yards in a game since joining the Big South in 2014. THREE-LEGGED RACE Kennesaw State is on the cusp of having three active players with 1,000 career rushing yards, as QB CHANDLER BURKS (930), DARNELL HOLLAND (917) and JAKE McKENZIE (851) are fast approaching the milestone. The Owls have two career 1,000-yard rushers in program history -- record holder CHASTON BENNETT (1,321) and former QB TREY WHITE (1,059). Burks would become the 10th quarterback in Big South history with 1,000 career rush yards. MAGIC MIKE Monmouth DB and Buck Buchanan Award candidate MIKE BASILE is now third all-time in Big South history with 209 career solo tackles, and 10 away from sole possession of second-place. He needs 35 to break the career record of 243 solo tackles that is held by Coastal Carolina’s QUINN BACKUS. Meanwhile, Basile’s 326 career total stops are ninth-most in the the Big South record book, and he is on pace to become just the fourth Big South player with 400 career tackles.

2017 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL HOMEWARD BOUND With last week’s move of the Presbyterian at The Citadel game to PC due to the threat of Hurricane Irma, the Blue Hose will now play SEVEN CONSECUTIVE home games in 2017 and eight overall -- the longest homestand in Big South history. PC will now host games each Saturday through Oct. 28, and the span includes a bye on Oct. 21. The Big South’s previous longest homestand was four games, which occurred six times and most recently by Gardner-Webb in 2016. BIG BROWN Charleston Southern junior LB SOLOMON BROWN has recorded 28.0 TFL and 11.5 sacks in his twoplus seasons in the Big South. He needs 2.5 sacks to equal the conference linebacker sack record of 14.0, which is held by MAURICE SIMPKINS (Coastal Carolina, 2003-05), and is 2.0 TFL shy of becoming the 18th player in league annals with 30. REG-GIE, REG-GIE Monmouth junior WR REGGIE WHITE JR. has 118 career receptions for 1,552 receiving yards with 13 TDs. Last season’s Big South leader in receptions, receptions per game and receiving yards, White is 448 receiving yards shy of becoming the 14th Big South player with 2,000 in a career, and 32 catches away from 150. MAXWELL HOUSE Gardner-Webb QB, Walter Payton Award candidate and Big South Preseason Offensive Player of the Year TYRELL MAXWELL, is the Big South’s all-time leading rusher among quarterbacks with 2,093 yards -- the only signal-caller above the 2,000-yard threshold. With 15 career rushing scores and 16 career scoring strikes, he is in position to become the first Big South QB with 20 career rushing and passing TDs. ELLIS ISLAND Charleston Southern DL, Buck Buchanan Award candidate and Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year ANTHONY ELLIS is tied for sixth all-time in Big South history in both TFL with 35.5 and sacks with 15.0. He is looking to become just the third player in the conference record book with 40 tackles-for-loss and 20 sacks. He would join Gardner-Webb’s BRIAN JOHNSTON (53.5 TFL, 20.5 SK) and Liberty’s CHIMA UZOWIHE (44.0 TFL, 25.0 SK) in this exclusive club. Ellis is one of two players in Big South history with two 7.0 sack seasons, as well as one of two to lead the conference in tackles-for-loss in consecutive years. 2,000-YARD RUSHING ODYSSEY Gardner-Webb QB TYRELL MAXWELL is the Big South’s active career rushing leader with 2,093 -- good for 21st all-time in league history. He needs 364 yards to enter the Top 10 and 907 rushing yards to become just the sixth player with 3,000 in a career. Maxwell led the Big South in rushing in 2016 with 965 yards. Meanwhile, Liberty RB TODD MACON is the next-highest active career rusher with 1,189 yards and is 811 rushing yards shy of becoming the 25th member of the Big South’s 2,000-yard rushing club.

POINT OF ORDER Liberty owns the Big South record for most consecutive games with a point scored at 135. Charleston’s streak of 57 games -- which was the second-longest active streak and tied for the fourthlongest overall -- was snapped in Week 1 at Mississippi State. Monmouth holds the secondlongest active streak at 27 games, just ahead of Kennesaw State’s streak of 24 games. SWEET SIXTEEN Liberty sophomore kicker ALEX PROBERT has tallied 16 points in each of the first two games this season, becoming the first Big South placekicker with back-to-back 16-point kicking efforts in league history. In Week 1, Probert tied the Big South single-game record with four field goals, as he was a perfect 4-of-4 at Baylor in becoming the 10th different Big South kicker to make four field goals in a contest. Probert now has seven career 10-point kicking game, the fourth-most such efforts in the Big South record book. 10-FOLD For the first time in Big South history, two teammates caught at least 10 passes in the same game as Liberty duo ANTONIO GANDY-GOLDEN and DAMIAN KING achieved the feat in Week 1 at Baylor. Gandy-Golden posted career-highs of 13 receptions for 192 yards, while King caught 10 balls for 66 yards. Entering the night, Gandy-Golden had 21 catches and 315 yards in his freshman year of 2016, while King owned 24 receptions and 206 receiving yards in his first two seasons on the Flames’ roster.

2017 BIG SOUTH FOOTBALL GOOD WORK YOUNG MEN The Big South Conference is once again represented among the national candidates for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, as Kennesaw State’s LUTHER JONES and Liberty’s TREY TURNER are among the 146 candidates from every subdivision and classification. The Big South has had one honoree named to the team -- Charleston Southern’s JORDAN LANCASTER in 2010. BIRDS OF PREY Monmouth is currently seventh in the nation in rushing defense with 53.5 yards allowed after two weeks. In Week 1, the Hawks held Lafayette to minus-1 yard rushing, tied for the fourth-fewest rushing yards allowed an FCS opponent in Big South history. In overall games, the Hawks’ effort ranks tied for eighth on the league’s all-time ledger. BIG SOUTH COLLECTS FIRST-EVER WIN OVER POWER 5 MEMBER The Big South scored its sixth win over an FBS opponent with Liberty’s 48-45 triumph over Big 12 member Baylor in Week 1. It was the conference’s first-ever win over a Power 5 member, as well as the league’s first FBS victory in a season-opener. The Big South’s six FBS wins have all come since 2010. CALVERT GETS BIG SOUTH PASSING RECORD TRIFECTA IN BAYLOR WIN Liberty sophomore QB STEPHEN CALVERT set three Big South single-game passing records during the Flames’ Week 1 win at Baylor. He established new marks for completions (44), attempts (60) and yardage (447) against the Bears. Calvert’s effort bested the previous records of 37 completions (Presbyterian’s TIM WEBB at Wofford in 2008), 57 attempts (Webb at Appalachian State in 2008) and 430 yards (Gardner-Webb’s LUCAS BEATTY at VMI in 2014). Calvert’s 447 yards of offense at Baylor is the fourth-most in a game in Big South history. TV GUIDE The Big South Conference’s 2017 television slate features 45 games spanning every week of the campaign -- nearly 90 percent of the entire schedule -- with 14 total games exclusively on ESPN3, STADIUM and 7COMM/PRINCETON MEDIA GROUP. ESPN3, ESPN’s live multi-screen sports network, will exclusively deliver seven games this year, including a “Wildcard” selection the final week of the regular-season. Coverage of that game will be determined 14-21 days in advance. Stadium will televise three exclusive contests, which will all be noon kickoffs. 7Comm/Princeton Media Group is a new television partner in 2017, and will produce and air four football broadcasts on a new regional network of broadcast TV stations named “College Football Down South.” The first exclusive broadcast date was this past Saturday’s Lafayette at Monmouth contest on ESPN3, and the package resumes Oct. 14 with the first weekend of Big South games on ESPN3 and Stadium.

HELLOS The Big South football membership will feature the addition of Campbell University in 2018, as the school announced on Nov. 14, 2016, that it will begin scholarship football that season, and make the subsequent move to the Big South. Campbell is already a full-time conference member, and is playing its final season of non-scholarship football in the Pioneer Football League. Meanwhile, the University of North Alabama will join Big South Football in 2019 as an associate member, a direct result of the Big South’s collaboration agreement with the ASUN Conference in which ASUN members playing scholarship football have an automatic home in the Big South.

GOOD-BYES Liberty University is playing its final football season in the Big South this fall, as the Flames received a waiver from the NCAA to transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision as an independent. With Liberty’s transition underway, the Flames are ineligible for the Big South championship and FCS Playoffs, and thus are not eligible for the conference’s preseason poll nor the FCS Coaches Top 25 poll. The Flames remain a part of the conference schedule this season and will be considered a league opponent, but will be listed at the bottom of the standings.
