2017 SUMMER ASSIGNMENT FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN Welcome incoming freshmen! Your acceptance to Art & Design could hold the key to your professional future, and it all begins with the work that you will produce over your summer vacation for your Design Foundation class. Design Foundation is a fundamental course that will strengthen your technical skills and visual acuity through your understanding of the principles and elements of art and design. This is best accomplished through observational drawing. “The better you see the better you draw. The more you draw, the better you see.” So, with the above adage in mind, your summer task will be to do the following:  Draw from observation twenty (20) objects of your choice that see in your home or outdoors. These drawings should be done in your sketchbook and the sizes can be about 2-3 inches in height, so you should be able to get about three to five objects on a page. Objects should be drawn as realistically as possible, showing your ability to shade using graphite (pencil). (Pace yourself and do not do all twenty drawing just before starting school!)  Develop a sustained drawing of a still-life set up in your home that you can leave in place and revisit to work on over time. Choose a medium that you are comfortable working with such as ink, watercolor, graphite, acrylic, etc. Try not to work larger than 11x14. Your support can be drawing paper, watercolor paper or canvas paper.  Write a short paragraph describing the best thing you did over the summer and support it with an illustration of that activity. Also, write a short paragraph describing the worst thing that occurred over the summer and support the occurrence with an illustration.  Visit a museum and write a short paragraph describing your experience and one piece of art that you discovered. Also share a bit of information about the artist. Have a wonderful summer vacation and we look forward to seeing you in September.
