GOD His Attributes & Characteristics

2017 THEOLOGICAL STUDY Rev. Sam Letson, III

January-December

GOD In our world we hear His name spoken often, though seldom said with respect or awe. You may even say His name yourself, calling out to Him regularly. But what, or how much, do you really know about God? And other than some basic facts, is it really important for you to know much more about Him? The answer is: Yes...to live faithfully and obediently as a disciple of Jesus, it is critically important that you learn all you can about God! To help you, one Sunday morning each month throughout 2017, we will learn about some of God’s attributes and characteristics. You’ve heard His name. You’ve even spoken His name. Now come and learn more about our God! Do so, and be blessed.

Pastor Sam

“Make Your ways known to me, Lord; teach me Your paths. Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation...” Psalm 25:4-5a

Approaching God How do you enter God’s presence? The right way is to come before Him in an attitude of awe and reverence, while offering Him thanksgiving and praise, with joy and singing in your heart. These are some of the words the psalmists used when instructing us on how we are to approach God... “You are resplendent and majestic...And You - You are to be feared. When You are angry, who can stand before You?...let all who are around Him bring tribute to the awe-inspiring One. (Psalm 76:4,7,11b) “It is good to praise the Lord, to sing praise to Your name...” (Psalm 92:1a) “The Lord reigns! He is robed in majesty…” (Psalm 93:1a) “Come, let us shout joyfully to the Lord, shout triumphantly to the rock of our salvation! Let us enter His presence with thanksgiving; let us shout triumphantly to Him in song.” (Psalm 95:1-2) “Come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, the sheep under His care.” (Psalm 95:6-7) “Shout triumphantly to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs...Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise His name.” (Psalm 100:1-2,4; HCSB)

Many other passages communicate these same truths. Approaching God through a relationship with Jesus Christ is a privilege and joy for the believer. But it also is a humbling experience, as the prophets remind us…

...to give us your e-mail address and be added to our list.

“But the Lord is in His holy temple; let everyone on earth be silent in His presence.” (Habakkuk 2:20) “Then I said: Woe is me for I am ruined because I am a man of unclean lips and live among a people of unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts.” (Isaiah 6:5; HCSB)

Get connected.

Therefore, do not take too lightly approaching God. Never rush into His presence too flippantly, nor too quickly; but reverently and respectfully. He is still God.
