The Desert Mountain Invitational is very excited to field 20 teams in 2017 including one team from Hawaii. The tournament format will be the same as last year. All teams will play four pool games over the first three days. After the pool games, a seeding order will determine bracket play. Bracket play starts Friday March 17. There will be a Gold bracket with seeds 1-8, a Silver bracket with seeds 9-16, and a Bronze bracket with seeds 17-20. Teams will be seeded using a power point system based on the first four games play on Tuesday-Thursday. The power point system will work as follows: · ·
4 points per win 1 additional point for every win by a team you play Example – Team A finished with a record of 2-2 (2x4=8) · Team A’s first opponent’s record was 1-3 · Team A’s second opponent’s record was 2-2 · Team A’s third opponent’s record was 4-0 · Team A’s forth opponent’s record was 3-1 · Add the # of wins by each opponent and multiply by 1=(10x1=10) · Team A’s power points would be 10+8=18
·
Any team that finishes 4-0 during Tuesday-Thursday will automatically qualify for the championship bracket. In the event a team finishes 4-0 but does not finish in the top 8 power point total after Thursday’s play, the team will move up to the number 8 seed and move the number 8 seed down to the number 9 seed and so forth (similar to the existing state tournament process where a region champion automatically qualifies even if they finished out of the top 16 teams). ·
Tie-Breaking procedure for teams that are tied in power points: 1. Head to Head 2. Least runs allowed 3. Most runs scored 4. Coin flip
Dugout determined by first arrival preference. If team on field in prior game plays back to back games, they would just stay in same dugout. Home teams chosen by coin flip before game with umpires. Time limit in pool play, and bracket play (except for championship game and third place game) is 1.5 hours (or 7 innings, whatever occurs first), complete the inning; home team bats last, if needed. The ten run rule is in effect after five innings. If tied after seven innings played (or 1.5 hours), play one extra inning, If still tied go to the international tie-breaker. Only the Gold bracket championship game and third place game may be played to completion (without international tiebreakers).
