WELCOME ON BACK The Bulls return their entire coaching staff from the 2016 season, including head coach Mark Kingston, assistant coaches Mike Current, Billy Mohl, and Chris Cates. This is the third consecutive season where there have been no changes to the coaching staff of the USF baseball program. 500-500 The USF baseball pitching staff has recorded 500 or more strikeouts in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history. The team’s 517 strikeouts in 2016 were the second most, trailing just the 546 strikeouts

the Bulls accomplished in the 1995 season. USF has only achieved 500 or more strikeouts four times in the program’s 51 year history. KEEPING IT LOCAL The USF baseball team boasts 34 players this season, 32 of which are from the state of Florida. Over the past two years, 66 of the 68 roster spots have been filled with Florida natives. BAY AREA BOYS The Bulls are proud to call the Bay Area their home and the majority of the baseball team hails from the surrounding area (within 30 minutes of the USF campus or Tampa Bay). Eight Bulls are from Hillsborough County (Garrett Bye, Nick Cerelli, Chris Chatfield, Michael Farley, Anthony Gonnella, Andres Leal, Jordan Santos, Ryan Valdes), two are from Polk County (Levi Borders, Luke Borders) and Pasco County (Kevin Merrell, Carson Ragsdale) and one from Sarasota County (Joe Cavallaro). The team has no representation from Pinellas County this year. TAMPA ROOTS The Bulls have four players that call Tampa home (Nick Cerelli, Andres Leal, Jordan Santos, and Ryan Valdes). PLAYER OF THE YEAR Sophomore catcher/first baseman Joe Genord was named the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League Player of the Year in 2016 (.296, seven HR, league record 45 RBIs). KEVIN MERRELL KUDOS Shortstop Kevin Merrell was named preseason all-conference by the American Athletic Conference this season. The junior from Odessa, Fla. has led USF in batting average each of the last two seasons (.346 in 2015, .320 in 2016). Merrell also posted a team-high .418 on-base percentage in 2016 and his 16 stolen bases ranked eighth in The American. This is the first preseason all-conference recognition for Merrell. He was selected to the 2016 American

Athletic Conference First Team last season. FRESHMEN TO SOPHOMORES USF’s top 10 national signing class, which debuted in 2016, gained a lot of experience last season. A year ago, the Bulls found themselves fielding seven freshmen in the lineup at times. Freshman outfielder Chris Chatfield (Riverview, Fla.) led the team in home runs (seven) as freshman catcher Joe Genord (Lake Worth, Fla.) was named the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League Player of the Year. This season, those freshmen have progressed into sophomores and look to build upon their inaugural collegiate debuts with another step forward in 2017. HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE The Bulls are set to begin their seventh season at USF Baseball Stadium. Following its opening in 2011, the ballpark has been a big home field advantage for the Bulls, who have won 62 percent of their games at USF Baseball Stadium. THE BORDERS BROTHERS Brothers Levi and Luke Borders are both back for another season with the Bulls in 2016. Levi is a three-year member of the team, dating back to 2013. He has played in 160 games, making 153 starts for USF, compiling a .264 batting average with 10 home runs and 79 RBIs. Luke has been with the Bulls since 2014. Like his brother, Luke has been an everyday player for USF, playing in 108 games while making 103 starts. Luke is hitting .268 with the Bulls with three home runs and 68 RBIs.
THE AMERICAN
match-up will take possession of a large trophy shaped like the iconic I-4 road sign, which will be displayed on their campus for the following year. There will also be a similar plaque bestowed to the overall winning school each year. USF and UCF will score head-to-head in 14 sports programs represented at both universities. Nine of those programs will compete head-tohead during the regular season. The programs that don’t compete directly against each other will determine a winner based on the best overall conference post-season performance of each team. Winning teams can accrue up to six points toward the overall yearlong, school total. The performances of both athletic programs in the annual NCAA Graduation Success Rate will be used as a tie-breaker, if necessary. Total points will be tallied and announced throughout the year with progress available for viewing on the “War on I-4” website (www.War-On-I4. com). The overall winning school will be presented the “War On I-4” trophy following completion of the last scored competition in the spring semester. The score is currently 18-15 UCF. The two teams will meet again on March 2 at USF. For more information on the rivalry, please visit: War-on-I4.com .
WAR ON I-4 USF and the University of Central Florida announced the official recognition of the “War On I-4” rivalry series in September.
BULLS ON NATIONAL TV The May 20 game at UCF has been picked up by CBS Sports Network and will air to a national audience. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Orlando, Fla.
The Green & Gold and the Black & Gold will compete for year-long bragging rights with the winners in each of 14 sports scoring toward a final tally for each program. The winning university of the football
