WEBER STATE FOOTBALL HISTORY Weber State began playing Division I football in 1962 and one year later, became a charter member of the Big Sky Conference. WSU has captured three Big Sky titles and advanced to the FCS Playoffs five times in school history, including last year. Weber State’s list of legendary head coaches includes Sark Arslanian, Mike Price, Dave Arslanian and Ron McBride. The ‘Cats have had 51 players earn All-American honors and have had 37 players drafted in the NFL. Former WSU quarterback Jamie Martin won the 1991 Walter Payton Trophy and then had a long career in the NFL. Several other Wildcats have also played in the NFL, including Paul McQuistan who won a Super Bowl ring in 2015 with the Seattle Seahawks.

WILDCATS COME UP SHORT IN 33-20 LOSS AT CALIFORNIA Weber State led the Pac-12 California Bears entering the fourth quarter before falling 33-20 Saturday afternoon in Berkeley. The Wildcats jumped out to a 10-7 lead after the first quarter, then led 20-7 at halftime and entering the fourth quarter before Cal scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to seal the win. The Wildcats totaled 571 yards of total offense in the game and held Cal to 431 yards. WSU also had 24 first downs, but the ‘Cats committed three turnovers. STEFAN CANTWELL SHINES AT CAL Weber State senior quarterback Stefan Cantwell had a record-setting performance in Saturday’s game with the Bears. He finished the game with 492 yards of total offense, which ranks as the seventh most in a game in Weber State history. It was also the most yards of total offense in a game against and FBS opponent. The South Jordan, Utah, native was 25-of-44 passing for 431 yards and one touchdown and had 20 carries for 61 yards rushing and one more touchdown. The 431 yards passing was the 12th most in a game in school history and was also the most ever against an FBS opponent. He had a nine-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, then found Rashid Shaheed for a 55-yard touchdown late in the second quarter. After two games this season, Cantwell is second in the Big Sky and seventh in the nation in total offense, averaging 333 yards per game. He is third in the Big Sky in passing at 297 yards per game. RASHID SHAHEED THIRD IN BIG SKY IN ALL PURPOSE YARDS Weber State red shirt freshman wide receiver Rashid Shaheed led all Wildcats in receiving in Saturday’s game. He had four receptions for 149 yards and one touchdown in just his second career game. He also had three kickoff returns for 79 yards, giving him 228 all purpose yards in the game. Shaheed, a native of San Diego, averaged 37.3 yards per catch, which included a 55-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter. After two games, Shaheed ranks third in the Big Sky in all purpose yards at 151.5 yards per game. He is also ninth in receiving yards per game at 77.0. He has five catches for 154 yards and one touchdown after two games to lead all WSU receivers. He is averaging over 30 yards per reception. WILDCATS IN NATIONAL POLLS Weber State is ranked 21st in the nation in this week’s FCS Coaches poll, dropping from 20th last week. The Wildcats are just outside the top 25 in the STATS FCS poll. STATISTICAL RANKINGS Weber State is third in the nation in third down conversion percentage. WSU has converted on 21 of 33 third down attempts for 63.6 percent. The Wildcats are also first in the Big Sky and seventh in the nation in red zone defense. WSU has allowed its opponent to score on two of four attempts in the red zone with one touchdown. The ‘Cats lead the conference and rank fifth in the country in total offense, averaging 528 yards per game and sixth in scoring offense. Individually, senior Xequille Harry leads the conference and is third in the nation in punt returns, averaging 24 yards per return. Senior McKay Murphy is first in the league and 13th in the country in tackles for loss with 4.5 for 12 yards. COACHING STAFF Jay Hill returns for his fourth season at the helm of the Wildcats. He has led WSU to a 16-20 overall record and a 13-11 record in Big Sky play. Hill will also serve as defensive coordinator for the Wildcats this season. Fesi Sitake is in his fourth year at Weber State and his second season as offensive coordinator for the Wildcats. Associate head coach Brent Myers returns for his fourth season at Weber State. Also returning are assistant coaches Kite Afeaki (defensive line), Kelly Bills (wide receivers), Quinton Ganther (running backs), Preston Hadley (secondary) and Colton Swan (special teams, outside linebackers). New assistant coaches this year are Grant Duff (inside linebackers) and former Wildcat All-American Al Pupunu (tight ends). Ryan Milus (cornerbacks) and Skyler Ridley (offense) are graduate assistants and Derrick Luken is the Director of Football Operations. WEBER STATE PICKED FIFTH IN BIG SKY PRESEASON POLLS This year Weber State was selected to finish fifth in the Big Sky preseason media and coaches polls. North Dakota was picked to finish first in both polls, followed by Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona and Cal Poly. The Wildcats were fifth with Montana sixth and Southern Utah seventh. TEAM CAPTAINS Coach Hill has named five captains for the Wildcats for this season, two on offense and three on defense. The two offensive captains are senior quarterback Stefan Cantwell and senior tight end Andrew Vollert. The three defensive captains are senior cornerback Taron Johnson, senior defensive tackle McKay Murphy and junior linebacker LeGrand Toia.

ABOUT SACRAMENTO STATE Sacramento State enters its final non-conference game with a 1-1 record. The Hornets opened the season with a 28-6 loss at Idaho but followed that up with a 56-22 home win over Incarnate Word last Saturday. In the win, Sacramento State totaled 535 yards of total offense with 377 yards passing. The Hornet defense also forced five turnovers, including four interceptions. After two games, Sacramento State has had one of the strongest defenses in the Big Sky. The Hornets are first in the nation in interceptions with six this season and rank second in the country in opponent third down conversions at 14.3 percent. They also lead the Big Sky and rank fifth in the country in turnover margin at +5 and lead the conference in sacks with six. Sacramento State is also second in the Big Sky in total defense, giving up 333 yards per game and rank third in rushing defense. Individually, junior quarterback Kevin Thompson leads the conference in pass efficiency and is ninth in passing yards per game and 10th in total offense. Freshman running back Elijah Dotson is ninth in the league in rushing at 60 yards per game and leads the conference in kick return average at 24.4 yards per return. Defensively, junior defensive back Dre Terrell was named the Big Sky and FCS National Player of the Week last week after his performance in the win over Incarnate Word. Terrell tied a school record with three interceptions in the game and led the team with six tackles. Sacramento State is coming off a 2-9 record last year in which they finished in a tie for ninth in the Big Sky at 2-6. The Hornets returned 18 starters off last year’s squad. They were picked to finish 12th in this season’s preseason polls. HEAD COACH JODY SEARS The Hornets are coached by former Weber State head coach Jody Sears who is in his third season as coach at Sacramento State. He enters Saturday’s game with a 16-42 overall record as a head coach and is 12-23 at Sacramento State. Sears was the head coach at Weber State from 2012-13, compiling a 4-19 overall record and a 3-13 record in Big Sky play. Sears then became the head coach at Sacramento State in 2014 and posted a 7-5 record his first season, then 2-9 in 2015 and 2016. SERIES HISTORY Weber State and Sacramento State have met every year since the Hornets joined the Big Sky in 1996. Weber State holds a 13-8 all-time series lead and the Wildcats have won the last two meetings. This is the fourth-straight year the two teams have met in a non-conference game. After the Hornets won three in a row from 2012-14, the Wildcats won the last two meetings in Ogden, including a 14-7 win last season. Sacramento State holds a 7-3 all-time series lead over Weber State in games in Sacramento and Weber State has not won in Hornet Stadium since 2008. The Hornets have won the last three games in Sacramento, including a 42-31 win in 2014 in Jay Hill’s first year as head coach at WSU. CALIFORNIA CONNECTIONS Weber State has 22 players on this year’s roster from the state of California. In addition, 12 players hail from northern California and are making a second-straight trip to the area this week. Wildcat senior All-Conference cornerback Taron Johnson is a Sacramento native and graduated from Sheldon High School. INJURY REPORT Weber State has played the first two games without junior linebacker Landon Stice, a preseason All-Big Sky selection. Stice has missed the first two games with a broken hand suffered during fall camp. Senior cornerback Arnold Lopez has also missed the first two games with an ACL injury. EXTRA POINTS Two Wildcat receivers are approaching milestones. WSU senior Drew Batchelor needs 10 more receiving yards to reach 1,000 yards for his career...Wildcat senior All-American tight end Andrew Vollert needs just 26 more receiving yards to reach 1,000 for his twoyear career...WSU red shirt freshman kicker Trey Tuttle has been perfect in two games this season. He is a 12-of-12 on extra point attempts and is 4-of-4 on field goals, including field goals of 37 and 45 yards in Saturday’s game. He leads the Big Sky in scoring with 24 points after two games. LOOKING AHEAD After Saturday’s game, the Wildcats will return home and will open Big Sky Conference play. WSU will host UC Davis on Saturday, Sept. 23 in a 5 p.m. kickoff at Stewart Stadium. It will be the Big Sky Conference opener and will also be the annual Homecoming game at Weber State.

Jay Hill is in his fourth season as the head coach at Weber State. In 2016, he led the Wildcats to a winning record, a third-place finish in the Big Sky, and a trip to the FCS Playoffs. Hill was named the 11th head coach in Weber State football history in December 2013. In four seasons at WSU, he has a career record of 16-20 overall and is 13-11 in Big Sky Conference games. He has coached 34 players to Big Sky All-Conference honors and two players have earned All-American honors. In 2016, Hill guided Weber State to a 7-5 record. The Wildcats finished 6-2 in Big Sky Conference play, finishing third in the conference standings, Weber State’s highest finish since 2009. Weber State also qualified for the FCS Playoffs for the first time since 2009. The Wildcats were also ranked nationally during the season for the first time in six years. Weber State’s defense led the Big Sky in passing defense. During the season the ‘Cats won five-straight games, including a dramatic comeback with at Southern Utah, where the Wildcats rallied for a 22-point deficit in the final eight minutes of the game. Weber State also posted backto-back winning seasons for the first time in six years. The Wildcats had 13 players earn Big Sky All-Conference honors, including Andrew Vollert and Tre’von Johnson and the first team. Vollert was also named an All-American at Weber State. In 2015, Hill guided the Wildcats to a 6-5 overall record and a 5-3 record in Big Sky play.
