Key Things about March • Provides estimates of U.S. farmers’ planting intentions for the new year, offering a glimpse of the upcoming growing season. Grains stored on & off farm (elevators) will show our State & US old crop carry over. • Samples for: • Ag Yield - May through August • Wheat Objective Yield

11

CAPI/MOST Overview • Section 2: Crops

• Don’t Knows/Refusals NOT valid for acres planted or harvested • If can give acres for most commodities, OK to DK/Refuse a crop but leave notes.

• Winter Wheat Harvested

• Leave note if not harvested for grain or seed (grain hay, winter kill, drowned out, etc.)

• Hay acres harvested

• Count the acres once

• Acres Double Cropped? • Helpful comment when crops total more than cropland 12

CAPI/MOST Overview • Section 3: Storage Capacity & Crops Stored • Total On Farm Storage capacity: bushels • On-farm stocks on the 1st • • • •

Regardless of ownership if stored on this operation Stored in temporary or permanent facilities Do NOT include grains stored in OFF Farm Facilities Don’t Know/Refusal valid - for specific crops

13

CAPI/MOST Overview • Section 3: Storage Capacity & Crops Stored (cont.) • A few scenarios we have seen

• This section is blank (even the yes/no boxes are blank) and enumerator comment “NONE”. • Not sure if no Capacity or no Grains stored or BOTH are zero?

On March 1,

On March 1, 2017

Mar 1 from 2017

• With MOST you can put comments on specific questions, by clicking on the item code in the GREEN BOX. This bring up the calculator then you can click on the “Add Comment” button. 14

CAPI/MOST Overview • Section 3: Storage

Capacity & Crops Stored (cont.) • A few scenarios we have seen

On March 1, 2017

Mar 1 from 2017

• DK (-1) in EVERY commodity stored question. • Did they have every commodity stored? • Has grains stored but would tell us which?

15

CAPI/MOST Overview • Section 3: Storage Capacity & Crops Stored (cont.) • Keep in mind • Use the yes/no boxes • An Example: Grains stored are blank & NO comments • If the NO boxes are all checked, we know none on hand • If the YES/NO boxes are NOT check, it makes it hard to decipher.

• Short comments are great, but be specific. • “Refused capacity” / “No capacity” • “Refused grain stored” / “No grains stored” / “None Stored”

16

Monthly Cattle on Feed Report Quentin Wearne Email: [email protected] Phone: 402-470-8771

Project Code 154

27

Survey Purpose • Measure the number of cattle on feed for all known feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head • Producers use the information to refine their production and marketing strategies • Processors, warehouses, storage companies, and the transportation sector rely on the reports to anticipate future volume

28

Survey Overview • Cattle and Calves on Feed • Include: • Cattle being fed to go directly to slaughter • Cattle being fed by you for others(regardless of ownership)

• Exclude: • • • •

Cattle owned but not on this operation Cattle being backgrounded Will be shipped to anywhere other than slaughter Cows and Bulls as they will not grade select or better

29

Terms and Definitions • Cattle on feed are steers and heifers being fed a ration of grain, silage, hay and/or protein supplement for slaughter market that are expected to produce a carcass that will grade select or better. It excludes cattle being "backgrounded only" for later sale as feeders or later placement in another feedlot. • Placements are steers and heifers put into a feedlot, fed a ration which will produce a carcass that will grade select or better, and are intended for the slaughter market. • Marketings are steers and heifers shipped out of feedlots to a slaughter market. • Other disappearance includes death loss, movement from feedlots to pasture, and shipments to other feedlots for further feeding. 30

Survey Information • NPR Sample Size approximately 1100 • Kansas, Nebraska & South Dakota

• Questionnaires: • Typically mail out 3-5 days before the 1st of the survey month • EDR option also available

Survey Purpose To collect data on the loss and health of managed honey bee colonies.

34

Sample Size *Only includes operations with 5 or more colonies. Northern Plains Region • • • •

Kansas Nebraska South Dakota North Dakota

35

Questionnaire • Total colonies owned on January 1st. • Total colonies owned on March 31st. • The state the colonies were located in between January 1st and March 31st. • Total colonies in this state on January 1st or first moved into the state. • Located in this state on January 1st? • Lost/deadout colonies (failure of colony) • Requeened colonies • Received Nucs or packages • New colonies added (splits new created, and replacements) 36

Questionnaire • Total colonies sold • Amount of colonies that experienced CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder) • Colony Health (by state) • • • • • •

Varroa Mites Other Pests and Parasites Diseases Pesticides Other Unknown

37

Data Relationships • Colonies Owned • Should not have large drop/adds between beginning colonies (Jan. 1) and ending colonies (March 31) • Starting colonies should match (or be close) to last quarters ending colonies • Starting colonies - Lost + Added - Sold = Ending Colonies

• Colonies by State • Double counting between colonies requeened, received nucs/packages, and adds (remember exclude any lost/died out colonies)

38

Bee Migration Colonies often move between states – so state totals will not necessarily equal overall total.

39

Data Relationships • Colony Health • Colony health includes colonies that were affected, but not lost, and colonies that were lost/died out • If colonies reported lost/died out – stressors should be present

Good notes are always helpful and appreciated!

• Reference Weeks: • April 9th – 15th • January 8th – 14th

• Box 599 (4 & 1) represent the month collected. 50

Misreporting Type of Workers • We have had issues in the past with misreporting type of workers. • In the NPR farmer workers usually fall into the “Equipment Operators” category and not the “Farmworkers” category. • They are likely operating a tractor or some other large piece of equipment and not manually planting or harvesting by hand. • Please ask follow-up questions to verify this information once the respondent answers the question or to assist them in categorizing the type of workers they have on the farm. Doing so will help increase the accuracy of our data.
