CHERRY TREE PRIMARY SCHOOL AND NURSERY
SPORTS NEWS In association with Sainsbury’s School Games Change4Life Event On Tuesday, 6th December, we were lucky enough to attend the James Hornsby School for a Change4Life event run by Chelsea Football Club! We were all so excited to get there and see what we were going to be doing. First of all, we learnt about different healthy and unhealthy foods and what these do to our bodies including different fruits and vegetables. We then went on a tour of the P.E department before going to the sports hall to learn about how our heart rate works and where to find our pulse in both our wrists and neck. The children played a few games that quickened their heart rate and even took their own pulse which they managed to do so well! After lunch, we were lucky enough to go into the fitness suite and test some equipment including the running machine, rowing machine, exercise bikes and even the new kayak machine! We finished the day with a basketball tournament in which we scored a few baskets which was fantastic! The children, Miss Hyde and Mrs. Summers had a great day and all learnt something new!
Well done to: Harvey Anwer, Scarlett Ward, Ronnie Poolaw, Yordan Tsvetanov, Frankie Whelan, Mandy Bendano, Oscar Crawford, Elaleigh Johnson, David Onamadu and Joshua Wahinya.
Year 5 and 6 District Basketball Success Our biggest event so far was the Basildon District Basketball Tournament which took place at James Hornsby School on Friday, 9th December. Cherry Tree had thirty players from Year 5 and 6 all eager to show their fantastic basketball skills learnt in lessons, lunchtime practice and after school club! This is one of the most popular sports in the District and we had tough competition from over twelve schools! All teams had some tough matches, particularly against Lee Chapel who were our main rivals! Our A team had a fantastic start and had to play Lee Chapel in their first match. The scores were close and we gave a good fight, but narrowly lost out. This set the standard for exceptional teamwork and tactics and Cherry Tree won the rest of their matches against Maple Grove, Phoenix and Ryedene to go through to the semi-finals. We were against Vange in the next stage, competing for the chance to play Lee Chapel again for the gold position. It was point for point during the most intense game of the tournament, with grit, desire and determination oozing from both sides!! Full time was extremely tense and finished with an equaliser from Vange to make it 4-4. The game was extended to “golden point” meaning the next team to score would win the game and a lucky break from Vange meant our chance for gold was over. Our players, full of sweat and adrenaline, found it hard to hide their disappointment …….as did we all. However, in true Cherry Tree spirit, they went straight out to play the next match and beat Fairhouse comfortably to secure 3rd place overall and a well–deserved bronze medal!!
Congratulations and well done to: Billy Harrington, Chioma Ogodi, Riley Winn, Kimberley Worsley, Ellis Faulkner, Sonny Winn, Morgan Parr, Shea Lewis, Gafar Awesu and Don Hermas.
Our fantastic C team had the toughest competition, as they had to play against all the tougher B teams, because we were the only school to enter a third team! Despite tough competition, they played exceptionally well to be placed 4th Overall!
Congratulations and well done to: Shayne Goodwin, Elizabeth Makinzi, Emily King, Samuel Thompson, Olu Owenseni, Alice Rider, Helen Wade, Antonio Englezu, Rebecca Harris and Jamie Wood.
Our B Team were outstanding and had won every match leading up to their final one against Lee Chapel B! It was down to this match to decide between the Silver and the Gold position!! By the end of the first match, Cherry Tree was in the lead and hopes were high. Lee Chapel fought back and scored one more basket in the final minute to secure their first place, but a welldeserved 2nd place for our team after an extremely close play-off!!
Congratulations to Kacie Howsam, Flori Akinola, Kelci Griffith, Leo Allen, Kenneth Onumado, Jeremiah Dapo-Ejirinde, Molly Marsh, George Burnside, Lewis Ryan and David Awobadeju.
All players gave 110% effort in their games, and had given up their lunchtimes all week to train and practice. They made Miss Edmunds extremely proud to be their PE teacher and were a real credit to Cherry Tree, well done!
