Yukon Public Schools Superintendent Bill Denton Announces Retirement
Yukon, Okla. – Yukon Public Schools Superintendent Bill Denton announced plans today to retire from the district, effective June 30, 2014. Denton made the announcement at the district’s monthly school board meeting, one week after YPS board members extended his contract for another year. “This is a bittersweet day for me,” said Denton, who has served as superintendent of Yukon Public Schools for six years. “I’m proud of what we have accomplished during my tenure. I will miss serving alongside our great teachers, students and parents. However, it’s time for me to begin planning the next stage of my career and family life, all the while, giving the district ample time to find a new leader who is a good match for this community.” Denton, a career educator, previously served as superintendent of Woodard Public Schools and held administrative roles in Bartlesville, Fairview and Vici Public Schools. He has been named District Administrator of the Year five times by the Oklahoma Association of Secondary School Principals and the Oklahoma Association of School Administrators. In addition to his Yukon school involvement, Denton is active in the Yukon community serving on boards for the Yukon United Way, the Yukon Chamber of Commerce and Youth and Family Services, Inc. “Yukon has been fortunate to benefit from Bill’s steady leadership,” said John Nail, YPS Board President. “The district has experienced tremendous growing pains in recent years. Bill has kept us moving in the right direction, always focused on quality education for every student.” Under his leadership, Denton was successful in passing a $92.4 million bond issue to build a world-‐class high school campus and athletic facilities. He was instrumental in adding technological and curriculum advancements to foster collaborative learning environments, in addition to accelerating reading and math achievement programs to prepare students for college. Denton said he has much to accomplish in the next 17 months, including finishing the build out of the state-‐of-‐the-‐art high school athletic facilities. He also wants to focus on providing teachers more professional development to help with added responsibilities in the classroom. The Yukon School Board will be working with a yet-‐to-‐be-‐determined education search firm to help recruit and interview potential superintendent candidates. They plan to hold a series of community meetings to get feedback from citizens about qualities they desire in a new superintendent. -‐end-‐
