TES Global supports the Campaign for Female Education

Why Girls' Education? In sub-Saharan Africa, 28 million girls can't afford to go to school. Poverty is the greatest barrier to accessing an education – girls are the first to be excluded, facing the risk of early marriage, early pregnancy and HIV/AIDS. Investing in girls and women is a matter of justice. It is also the most cost effective way to improve the health and economies of entire nations, combat climate change, and break the cycle of poverty for good. Educated girls will marry later, have a smaller, healthier family, and invest in their children’s education. They are more likely to resist genderbased violence and discrimination, and will change their communities from within.

Camfed is an international non-profit organisation tackling poverty and inequality by supporting girls to go to school and succeed, and empowering young women to step up as leaders of change.

Since 1993, Camfed has directly supported over 1.6 million children to go to school, and improved learning environments for nearly 4 million children through community-led education programmes in Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. We work in close partnership with local governments and community structures. Together with teachers, chiefs, parents and alumnae we are changing the context and the prospects for girls in rural Africa for good.

Young women graduates in CAMA are able to train as Learner Guides. They return to their local schools as role models and mentors, supporting vulnerable children in their studies, and delivering a uniquely tailored life skills and wellbeing programme called My Better World. Learner Guides work with teachers, parents and district officials to keep children in school, and to return those who have dropped out. Learner Guides can achieve a BTEC qualification to fast-track them into teacher training colleges, and qualify for interest-free loans to grow or start their own businesses.

Together we can send more girls to school Camfed supports the most vulnerable children, selected by community committees, at primary and secondary school, and in the critical transition period after school. As well as paying school fees and essentials like uniforms, books, and sanitary protection, your gift allows young women to access the training and resources they need to become economically independent leaders in their communities. Graduates join our unique alumnae network, CAMA. This movement of more than 55,000 mentors and entrepreneurs is growing rural economies and supporting many more girls to access education. In 2015 alone, CAMA’s philanthropists supported 123,379 children to go to school.

We recognise that access is the first step in supporting girls' education; providing quality and relevant learning which opens up pathways for transition post school is also vital. At every partner school, Camfed trains Teacher Mentors to look after the psycho-social wellbeing of vulnerable children, providing guidance and counselling, as well as contributing to programme monitoring and reporting. They work with community partners to ensure that students receive their entitlements, are attending class regularly, and are succeeding academically. Teacher Mentors coordinate professional and community assistance, such as home visits to child-headed households and help for children with disabilities.
