2 Fellow Producers, As I look back at how the last couple years have been, I can’t help but think the producers with the cows are in the drivers seat. The demand is strong with fewer calves each year to go into the feedlots. Drought over the last two years in the country has made for more heifers getting sold due to lack of feed, but just think about when it does rain and producers decide to retain some or all of their females. That is going to be even less marketable calves which means higher prices. The beef market looks like it is going to be good for the next few years at least with Red Angus sired feeders and bred females topping many of the sales I attended or watched this fall and winter. We encourage you to look over our offering and see the power these bulls have. We are very excited about the bulls we have raised this year. Many of our most powerful cows had bulls last spring which gave us a very stout lineup for this year. We also have very strict guidelines that we follow when deciding if a calf should be a bull or become a steer. We encourage you to read the short history of our herd that is included in the sale catalog. We may be the new kids on the block but the herd we have acquired was built off of Red Angus cornerstone genetics which we plan to keep using to become one of the premier breeders in the area. Our focus is on our customers success which in turn provides our success. Our goal is to bring the top genetics in the breed at a reasonable price for any size herd. We also would like to thank all of our customers over the past year who bought bulls or heifers from us and hope we can continue to serve you and your needs. The bulls are fed a ration of corn, dry distillers, grass hay, and protein after weaning. We start them out on a 48 meg ration for 30 days. This allows for their rumen to begin working correctly while they recover from the stresses of weaning. Then we work them up to a 55-58 meg ration until they are scanned for carcass data. This allows us to measure each bulls genetic growth potential. They are then backed down to the 48 meg ration until we deliver them. That allows for them to harden up and be ready to go to work. When you look at the bulls you will see that they are not fat. They are in good shape however which will allow them to go out and get to work for their new owners. We would love for you to call us to view the bulls or if you want to learn more about our program and vision. We enjoy talking about cattle and genetics so please consider us on your next bull purchase.

History of Mud Creek Reds

We started running commercial Red Angus cows in 2005. We had been trying to transition to an all red herd when we had the opportunity to purchase the Split Rock Red Angus herd in the fall of 2008 and 2009 when Tony Detoy dispersed his herd. This was a great opportunity to buy a well established seedstock operation that was built from top of the breed AI sires such as: Glacier Marias 548, Buffalo Creek Cherokee Canyon 4912, Leachman No-Equal 1174D, BJR Rambler 5162, BJR C-Chief 811, Schuler Iowa 527-615 along with others. We then spent the next few years using the best cows we had acquired to produce replacement females, and buying herd Sires that would propel our herd to where we wanted it to be. Spring 2012 we had our first private treaty offering of bulls. Cattlemen that came to look and bought liked the offering of bulls. We run our herd as close to a commercial herd as possible, our focus is on the commercial cattleman and making them the most profit possible. We have very strict culling criteria. Our motto “Save the Best, Cull the rest” is what we follow.

Here is a bull with a lot growth that doesn’t sacrifice calving ease. His dam sports a 104.6 MPPA with ratios of 106 for BW, 108 for WW, 102 for YW, 120 for IMF, and 103 for REA. Stack that performance with a sire that derives from breed greats like Trendsetter 6074, Make Mimi 7249, and Make My Day 981, and you have a nice herd sire prospect. Calving Ease Rating **

Breeding Philosophy

We focus on the traits that make the commercial rancher the most profit, Calving ease, growth, low maintenance energy, and maternal traits while trying to balance carcass values. CHAPA (Cow-calf Health and Productivity Audit) studies indicate that dystocia is responsible for 33 percent of all calf losses and 15.4 percent of beef cattle breeding losses. Dystocia is also the number one cause of calf mortality in the first 96 hours of life. (Patterson et al.) Pregnancy rates for the dam after losing a calf are lower than for dams that have not lost a calf. (Patterson et al.) Studies also indicate that animals experiencing dystocia while delivering a live calf may have decreased rebreeding rates. We can’t prevent all of the causes of calving difficulty, but why not minimize your risk as much as possible. Growth is one of the most important traits that impacts a cow calf operations bottom line. Wether you sell right of the cow, yearlings, or in the meat why not select bulls that are going to give you higher weaning weights, yearling weights, or get those cattle finished faster with less feed. Feed cost is the most expensive input to a cattle producer, that is why we watch the maintenance energy EPD of our entire herd very closely. Breeding low maintenance into your cattle saves you money by needing less feed for cows to maintain body condition and also allows for higher stocking rates in an average year. High maternal traits means that your females will stay in the herd longer, meaning not as many replacement heifers are needed to be retained or bought. If you keep your own replacements selecting a bull that excels in these traits also means his daughters will have higher conception rates and less calving difficulty at two years of age. That is a short overview of our thoughts and why we breed the kind of cattle that we do.
