“Love Your Enemies… HOW? WHY?!” Luke 6:36-49 – Part 2 SERMON-BASED STUDY GUIDE ** Take time to review the message from last week. Especially focus on the ‘flow’ of the passage and why PTK sees this passage as one unit and NOT an unrelated collection of comments and teachings by our Lord. **In addition to that review, spend some time reviewing the larger context of Luke 6. When is this taking place in Jesus’ earthly ministry? What has occurred already? To whom is the Sermon on the Mount/Plain addressed? At what level is the ‘resistance’ to Jesus among the Scribes and Pharisees? Etc. **In additions to “review” make sure everyone understands how the Sermon on the Mount/Plain relates to US TODAY. How are we to understand it? Are the principles Jesus taught here relevant and binding on us today or are they sort of irrelevant to us since they are standards of life in the Kingdom? Remind everyone that while we will be in ‘resurrected’ bodies in the Millennial Kingdom, there will still be an entire population of people who will be in ‘unresurrected’ bodies in the age of the Millennial Kingdom. Also, remind everyone that Jesus was giving this “sermon” to His disciples who were also in ‘unresurrected’ bodies at the time. Even though the Kingdom was postponed and not ‘ushered in’ at the time of Christ’s first coming, it remains His STANDARD and His EXPECTATION for His Disciples – something that remains the same in any age. In some ways it will be easier to live a godly and pure life in the Kingdom Age since Satan will be bound and the “world” system will not be present. BUT, the ‘flesh’ (fallen nature) will still be in every human heart. That is evident by the massive number of people Satan is able to ‘collect’ at the end of the Millennial Age to rebel against God. Introduction 1. A Praxis – 3 Do’s & 2 Do Not’s - Lk. 6:36-38 -DO – Be Merciful -DO NOT - Judge -DO NOT - Condemn -Do - Forgive -Do - Give **Review the Five ‘Do’s & Do Not’s’ that Jesus commanded for His Disciples (of course, that includes us now. 2. A Progression - Lk 6:39-49 -A Parable (V. 39) - The Blind cannot lead the Blind -A Pupil (V. 40) - The Pupil is not above the Teacher -A Plank (Vv. 41-42) – The Plank in one’s own eye hides the speck in another’s eye -A Plant (Vv. 43-45) – The Plant produces its own kind of fruit **A PROFOUND PRINCIPLE & PRIORITY (Vv. 46-49) - Disciples of Jesus, The Christ, MUST OBEY HIS WORD(S) & thereby build their life on the SURE FOUNDATION **Have you been able to follow the ‘progression’ of thought in this section? Try to think of it as JESUS bringing His disciples/us through a series of ideas/thoughts that lead to the last 1

PRINICIPLE and PRIORITY of life. There is NOTHING on earth more important than HUMBLY OBEYING CHRIST!! **Do you follow where the “HUMBLE” part comes from? That is from the ‘pupil is not greater than the teacher’ and ‘the plank in the eye’ parts of the passage. HUMILITY makes the pupil recognize that he is not greater than his teacher. HUMILITY searches out the sins in one’s own life BEFORE even thinking about the sins in other peoples’ lives. The opposite of humility is the utter arrogance and hypocrisy of the person in Christ’s illustration who has a plank in his own eye but he is foolishly focused on the speck in someone else’s eye. Humility is a very big part of the passage. **OBEDIENCE is absolutely FOUNDATIONAL to being a follower of Jesus, The Christ. Jesus did not speak softly or lightly about the issue of obedience. He unequivocally calls us to complete obedience. There are no shams or cover-ups that work with Him. He knows all and even if we are self-deceived, He knows the truth about out life. That is where the Humility comes into play along with the REGULAR SELF-EXAMINATION. BOTH are so important! Spend time discussing these things. Be honest about your struggles and covenant to pray together for one another in the in the ongoing challenge to be “OVERCOMERS” in the war against the “WORLD, the FLESH and the DEVIL”! TIMELESS TRUTH: Jesus, The Christ, COMMANDS and EXPECTS HIS DISCIPLES to live a life of CAREFUL, HUMBLE OBEDIENCE TO HIS WORD. So doing; so living; ASSURES US that we are building our life on a SOLID FOUNDATION on this earth and FITS US for life in His Kingdom. LIVING LESSON: Carefully, humbly EXAMINE your life. Ask yourself REGULARLY and HUMBLY and SINCERELY: “Am I LIVING my life in HUMBLE OBEDIENCE to the WORD OF GOD? What are the sins in my life of which I need to REPENT? …behaviors and attitudes I need to FORSAKE? Am I BUILDING MY LIFE ON THE SOLID FOUNDATION of EVERYDAY, HUMBLE OBEDIENCE TO CHRIST and TO HIS WORD?” **Discuss this Living Lesson – have each person share their own ‘process’ and ‘strategy’ for regular self-examination and repentance. Don’t take this challenge lightly. Jesus was not joking around when He said these things and we DARE NOT DISCOUNT the significance of this section of SCRIPTURE.
