A Proud People Read Genesis 11:1–9. The people who lived on the earth long ago had only one language. Everyone spoke alike. Everyone in the world could understand everyone else. The people were proud of what they could do. The people did not think about God very much. The people forgot that God gave them everything they had.

A Sad God God saw that the people were getting too proud. God was sad. God did not want the people to build the tower. He had a plan to stop them. One day, all the people were working on the tower. They had a surprise. The people could not tell what their friends were saying. God had made them talk strangely. The people could not understand each other. The tower was called “The Tower of Babel.” Babel means mixed up. The language was mixed up. People began to talk in different languages.
