Minutes of the USTA NorCal Junior Team Tennis Committee Meeting Friday, March 18th 2016
Mark Fairchilds, chair of the Junior Team Tennis Committee called the meeting to order at 12:40pm and roll call was conducted. Committee Members Present : Mark Fairchilds (chair), Tan Truong, Judy Newman, Bill Weber, Caryn Cranston USTA Staff Present: Darren Wenger, Summer Verhoeven, Beth Workeneh Guests Present: Margie Campbell Committee Members Absent: Tim Sunderland, Nathan Ganesh, Rosie Bareis, Cris Bacharach 1. UTR Benchmark – Committee discussed editing the current benchmark list to make it easier to find players by UTR level instead of just their name in alphabetical order. It was also requested to display a players zip code next to their name. USTA JTT staff confirmed that we are not able to add in a zip code to the list at this time. USTA JTT staff will publish a new benchmark list that is sorted by UTR rating level. a. Also, there were discussions about the level of play at the local level and the Section Championships regarding the current rule stating that even if you have one player on the advanced player benchmark list that it would make the whole team an “Advanced” team. USTA JTT staff will do more research regarding the level of teams competing in local leagues and come up with recommendations for future discussion. 2. Local League Concerns Brought up by Coaches – Committee discussed some of the concerns brought up by coaches in the spring season regarding teams that do not have home courts (travel teams only). Some of the concerns discussed were the cost of having to host more home matches due to other teams not having home courts. This does not seem to be a section wide issue at this time. Most of the concerns were submitted from one area. The discussion will continue on future calls. 3. Beginning yellow ball leagues - Geared Towards High School Players – Committee discussed ways to get more beginning level yellow ball leagues started that are geared towards high school players. Each committee member will be asked to brainstorm new ideas for future calls. 4. Diversity & Inclusion Grant – Margie Campbell joined the call to update the committee about the Provider Hispanic Outreach Grant that was available in our section.
