No Sophomore Slump -Brian Adkins has held down UCF’s top midweek starter spot on the pitching staff throughout the year, and currently ranks sixth in C-USA with a 1.59 ERA and first by allowing just one walk. -Adkins has allowed two runs or less in all four starts, and has lasted at least 6.0 innings in his last three outings. A Solid Improvement -As a junior, Nick Cicio made nine starts in 18 appearances, posting a 4-3 record with no saves and a 5.64 ERA. He also walked 31 in 59.0 innings. -The southpaw has greatly improved those numbers as a senior. In 2011, Cicio has a 1-0 record with three saves and a 0.60 ERA, issuing just three walks in 15.0 innings. The Baltimore native also has 23 strikeouts with only one run and eight hits allowed. -All six of Cicio’s appearances have come from the pen. What a Start -Freshman Ben Lively has produced a 4-0 record with a 1.00 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 27.0 innings in his first five-collegiate appearances (four starts). -The last Knight to start a season 4-0 on the mound was closer Justin Weiss in 2007. -The last UCF starter to hold a 4-0 record was when Ray Rodriguez and Darren Newlin each opened 2005 at 5-0 (Rodriguez eventually went to 6-0 before his first loss). -Lively is third in C-USA in ERA and first by holding opponents to a .152 average.
-Taking down Alabama Feb. 27, Lively has since produced a 4-0 record with a 1.00 ERA. -Lively became the first Knight since Mitch Herold in 2008 to toss a nine-inning complete game and the first freshman since Mitch Houck in 2006 to record a complete game when he took down Wagner, 5-1, March 12. UCF Power Play -The Knights have hit 15 home runs this year, and nine of them have come from D.J. Hicks (five) and Jonathan Griffin (four). -Hicks currently leads the Knights with a .677 slugging percentage and is second with a .468 OBP (Ronnie Richardson sits at .474). Hicks also has 12 walks compared to just nine strikeouts. Changing it Up -Through 17 games, head coach Terry Rooney did not make a change to the top five batters in his lineup. -However in the first game of the series with Columbia March 18, most of the lineup was rearranged. After Travis Shreve led off, Darnell Sweeney batted second followed by Chris Taladay, Ronnie Richardson and Beau Taylor. -And the quintet produced in a big way in the 9-8 win. Shreve went 3-for-5, Sweeney was 2-for-4, Taladay scored a run and was hit twice with a walk, Richardson drove in three and Taylor broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run single in the fifth.

Relief Ap p ea ra n ces
Shifting Momentum -Reliever Bryan Brown entered with UCF trailing Columbia March 18 4-2 in the third inning, and he proceeded to toss a career-high 5.0 innings to grab the win. -Brown struck out a personal-best seven batters and did not walk one as the Knights eventually took the lead for good with a five-run fifth inning.
Overcoming a Slow Start -Junior Ray Hanson went 4.2 innings with four runs against in his UCF debut vs. Siena Feb. 20. -But since then he has found his rhythm, highlighted by a week where he started twice from March 8-13, and put together two impressive outings. -The righty went a combined 1-0 with a 0.56 ERA against Mount St. Mary’s and Wagner, totaling 16.0 innings, eight strikeouts, one run, one walk and nine hits against. -In the complete-game win over Wagner, Hanson didn’t let a runner reach second base in the final eight innings. -Holding down the Sunday starting role, Hanson went seven more innings in a victory over Columbia March 20, solidifying the sweep against the Lions.
Going Deep Into Games -UCF starting pitchers have lasted at least 6.0 innings in eight out of the last nine outings, and in 11 of the last 13. -Overall, the starters are 12-0 this year with a 2.26 ERA and two complete games.

2011 UCF Baseball Game Notes
Game #21 UCF vs. Miami The 2011 Coaching Staff Ter r y R o o ney
Head Coach - Third Season P Postseason experience can mean everything in college baseball. Helping guide a program to Omaha takes a special coach and H aan emotional voice. As UCF desires to return to the postseason, hhead coach Terry Rooney knows how to get there. In his career, hhe has helped lead four different universities to the NCAA Reggionals, while bringing in nationally-ranked recruiting classes tto six different schools. Speaking of the recruiting trail, Rooney and his staffed have hauled in consecutive top-20 classes since their arrival to Orlando in the summer of 2008. His first class was No. 4 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and No. 10 by Baseball America, both of which were the highest rankings by those publications in UCF history. The Knights also have set numerous records under Rooney, including academic and attendance marks. In 2010, UCF won its most Conference USA games since joining the league in 2006, while it also broke the school and league records with a .343 team batting average and a .435 on-base percentage. That was accomplished even though the Knights were the only team in the country to have five freshmen make at least 35 starts.
The Rooney File Born: Nov. 29, 1973, in Quincy, Mass. High School: Robinson Secondary School, Fairfax, Va. The Godwin File
A veteran when it comes to success at the highest level of college baseball, associate head coach Cliff Godwin is in charge of the UCF offense as well as the catchers. A native of Snow Hill, N.C., he also serves as the recruiting coordinator for the Knights’ program after spending two years at LSU.
Born: Feb. 2, 1978, in Snow Hill, N.C. High School: Greene Central High School, Snow Hill, N.C. College Education: East Carolina, 2000; bachelor’s degree in management information systems master’s degree in business administration from ECU, 2002 Playing Career: Catcher - East Carolina, 1997-01 Catcher - Gateway Grizzlies (Frontier League), 2001-02 Coaching Career: Assistant coach - Kinston (N.C.) High School, 2003 Volunteer assistant coach - UNC Wilmington, 2003-04 Director of baseball operations - Vanderbilt, 2004-05 Assistant coach - Notre Dame, 2006 Assistant coach - LSU, 2007-08 Assistant coach - UCF, 2008-09 Associate head coach - UCF, 2009-Present
Associate Head Coach - Third Season
And already Godwin has brought in two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20, including this year’s class which was No. r 20 in the country by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. In his second year in 2010, Godwin directed a UCF offense that put up dizzying numbers, as he would go on to earn C-USA Assistant Coach of the Year honors from SEBaseball.com. The Knights’ .343 team batting average not only set a school record, but was the best by a Conference USA program in league history. They smashed the program’s single-season home run mark by sending 78 over the wall, and also broke the UCF record with a .538 slugging percentage.

The Palumbo File
One of the top young coaches on the East Coast, Jeff Palumbo is in his third season with the UCF baseball program. He provides his skills primarily with the UCF defense, but also assists with the hitters and the program’s recruiting efforts.
Born: March 6, 1982, in Cheverly, Md. High School: St. John’s College High School, Washington, D.C. College Education: George Mason, 2004; bachelor’s degree in administration of justice Playing Career: Infielder - George Mason, 2001-04 Infielder - Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, 2004 Coaching Career: Assistant coach - George Mason, 2006-08 Assistant coach - UCF, 2008-Present
Assistant Coach - Third Season
Palumbo’s recruiting efforts played a major factor in guiding UCF to a 33-22 record in 2010. The Knights were the only team in the country to have five freshmen make at least 35 starts in the batting order, and Palumbo faced the challenge of having three of them on the infield. But under his tutelage, the Black and Gold put together a .963 fielding percentage, the second-highest by a UCF defense in the last five years. It also turned a school-record 61 double plays in the regular season, which placed UCF among the top-10 clubs in the country for turning two.
Br ando n R o m ans
Volunteer Assistant Coach - Second Season After a stellar playing career at UCF, Brandon Romans joined the staff as the volunteer assistant coach in the spring of 2010. A native of Cocoa, Fla., Romans played three seasons with the Black and Gold, hitting .314 for his career with 17 home rruns and 77 RBI. In year one with Romans assisting the outfield and the catchers, the Knights’ offense ranked as one of the best in the country in 2010. Outfielders Chris Duffy (.447) and Shane Brown (.428) would become the first duo in C-USA history to hit .400 in the same season as they went on to earn spots on the All-C-USA First Team. And freshman center fielder Ronnie Richardson shined as well, leading all C-USA freshmen with a .448 on-base percentage.
