Flowing 13 miles through the heavily industrialized Northwest Indiana cities of Gary, East Chicago and Hammond, the Grand Calumet River enters into Lake Michigan via the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal. Once considered to be dead after decades of dumping, pollution and hydrologic modification, a collaborative effort is helping to bring the river back to life by removing the contaminated sediment.

A revitalized Grand Calumet River will help to support the rich aquatic life that it once contained. The River runs through communities of color that lack abundant recreational opportunities. Collaboration

Many different individuals and groups have been aiding in the revitalization of the Grand Calumet River. Some of these partners include the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes National Program Office, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Indiana Department of Environmental Management, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is working. It protects and revitalizes the world’s largest source of fresh surface water, and the region’s greatest economic and environmental resource. A Brookings Institution report shows that every $1 invested in Great Lakes restoration results in at least a $2 return in the form of increased fishing, tourism and home values.
