PRESENTED AT THE LUNCH CEREMONY

DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR: JAY O’NEIL How long have you been involved in youth hockey as a volunteer? I have been involved in youth hockey for 15 years What is the highlight of your career as a volunteer so far? The biggest highlight of volunteering is when I’ve read in the newspaper or hear about about a kid I had at Learn to Skate making a name for themselves on their high school or college hockey team. Tell us why you enjoy volunteering your time in youth hockey… Volunteering is my way to give back to a sport that has been a part of my life since I was a kid. My father was my coach and I have been my daughter’s coach. I enjoy knowing that the time I give enables young people that chance to play hockey.

COACH OF THE YEAR: JIM MAIMONE How long have you been involved in youth hockey as a volunteer? I have been involved in youth hockey for over 17 years starting in 1996 with Everett Youth Hockey. What is the highlight of your career as a volunteer so far? In addition to my daughter Sarah’s first goal in her first season, being able to create a program that changed the focus from “teaching kids to skate” to allowing players to “learn to skate” is a major highlight of my career so far. To be able to work with the youngest kids and provide them with an entry point to the game that is enjoyable is one of the greatest joys in coaching. The kids are having fun and learning at the same time…not every program for entry level players can say that! Tell us why you enjoy volunteering your time in youth hockey… In today’s world, where 60% of America’s children between the ages of 6 and 13 are considered obese, volunteering is my way of contributing to helping young children enjoy sports and appreciate the benefits of physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle. It is an obligation that I take very seriously- while having fun, of course!
