The Anteaters continued their unbeaten run against a pair of high-quality opponents starting off with a draw at LMU. The Lions had been on a tear themselves, and opened up the scoring in the 11th minute. Kiana Palacios tied things in the 60th minute, and despite a 22-10 shot advantage for the ‘Eaters, no other shots found the back of the net and the match would remain tied for a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes.

Sunday was a game added to the ledger just two weeks ago after Oregon had a match at Texas A&M canceled from Hurricane Harvey. Sunday also saw the return of Grayson Galbraith to the starting lineup, and she paid dividends heading home a Reema Bzeih cross in the 37th minute. The 1-0 lead would hold up behind the team’s fifth shutout of the season and three Maddie Newsom saves pushing the record to 3-1-3 and getting career win No. 114 for head coach Scott Juniper now the most wins by a coach in program history. SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS The Anteaters return to their run of WCC opponents as they will finish off non-conference play with four straight matches against them starting with San Diego and Pepperdine.
USD has a new head coach this season in well-decorated Louise Lieberman from UCLA. It’s been tough sledding to a 1-5 record scoring once in the five defeats while taking a win from Denver, 3-1. Last week, LBSU scored a 3-0 victory on the Toreros who have mustered up just over five shots a match and no second half goals. Summer Mason is the cog in the offense with nearly half the team’s shots and shots on goal. Amber Michel has been tested in net stopping 28 shots. The week closes out in Anteater Stadium as UCI and Pepperdine square off for the first time since 2012 when the Waves crushing UCI, 4-0, in a neutral site match at UCLA. Pepperdine and UCLA will face each other Friday before they head to Irvine. The Waves are 4-2-1 so far with decisive wins over Texas Tech and Northwestern while drawing with Virginia Tech and taking Texas A&M to overtime. Pepperdine has been less successful on the road with just one win away from home in four matches. The defense carries the torch mirroring UCI with three goals allowed in seven matches led by Hailey Harbison and Jaime Van Horn in front of junior keeper Brielle Preece. Freshman Devyn Gilfoy has burst onto the scene with four goals and two game-winners early in her career helped by turning 12 of her 15 shots on frame. Sunday’s win propelled head coach Scott Juniper into the program’s top spot all-time in wins with 114. He surpassed Marine Cano who won 113 over 12 seasons with the program. Scott’s Sunday win over Oregon was his eighth over a Pac-12 program to add to other premier wins over Texas A&M, Auburn, Oklahoma, BYU, Wake Forest, and Portland and five wins over ranked squads his teams have accomplished. "Goes without saying that there's just tons and tons of people, players, coaches, administrators that have all done their part in those wins so its a nice milestone for a lot of different people who are involved. I like to think that milestones are like seeing a bear on a hike: pretty cool for a moment, but you better keep moving because there's something a lot cooler around the corner or over the next peak so we'll enjoy it for the moment, but will move on pretty quick."
USD and Pep is the 3rd and 4th of 6 WCC schools on the Anteater docket. This will be the 100th meeting between UCI and the WCC on Friday which has resulted in a 30-58-11 record in those matches. Their opponent this week, Pepperdine, has received votes in multiple rankings throughout this season UCI and USD first met in 1992 playing twice with the ‘Eaters taking both matches - 1-0 at home and 2-0 at USD UCI and USD have one draw which came in their only postseason meeting in 2011 at UC Irvine. The teams drew, 2-2, with USD advancing on a PK tiebreaker, 5-3 UCI is 2-0-1 in their last three vs. San Diego, and have not lost in regulation to the Toreros since 2005 UCI and Pepperdine first met in 1993, a 1-0 Pepperdine victory This is Pepperdine’s first visit to UCI since 2008 where UCI won, 2-1. In nine seasons at the helm, Juniper put the Anteaters on the national map, leading the program to a historic 19-3-2 season and reaching NCAA Tournament for the first time in history in 2010 and returning for a second straight year in 2011 after a 16-win season. Coach Juniper has built the Anteater program into an annual contender that has taken out top-tier programs in the process such as Texas A&M, Auburn, Oregon State, Portland, and Long Beach State. He has led the program to winning seasons and Big West Tournament berths in six of his eight campaigns drawing Big West and NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year honors following the 2010 season. Juniper guided UCI to the Sweet Sixteen with victories over Arizona State and Wake Forest, before losing 1-0 in double overtime to the University of Washington at Anteater Stadium. The 2010 team also captured the Big West regular-season title with a record of 8-0-0, the first time that a team has ever been unbeaten and untied in Big West Conference play. The women's soccer team concluded the season ranked No. 14 in the nation and second in California (NSCAA). For his efforts, Juniper was recognized as the 2010 Big West Coach of the Year and NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year. The 2010 season saw four players named to the Big West first team and the Anteaters came away the majority of conference's awards. Danielle de Seriere was named the Big West Goalkeeper of the Year, Coco Goodson garnered Defender of the Year recognition and Tanya Taylor was voted the Offensive Player of the Year. UCI also had four all-region honorees, two of whom were also named All-Americans, three Academic All-Americans and the program's first ever Women's Professional Soccer league draft pick as Tanya Taylor was selected by the Boston Breakers. Following Taylor has been CoCo Goodson, a 2012 draft pick, who has built a solid professional career with Sky Blue FC along with Rachel Wood (Boston Breakers) and Cami Privett (Houston Dash) sending Anteaters to professional leagues in the Netherlands, Norway, and Iceland in the process. In 2009, Juniper's Anteaters reached the Big West Tournament going 12-7-2 overall and 4-3-1 in Big West play finishing in a tie for fourth place. In Juniper's first season, he led UCI to an 11-7-2 record overall and a 5-2-1 record in the Big West. That season the 'Eaters finished third in the Big West to qualify for the Big West Conference Tournament. In 2006, Juniper was hired as an assistant coach at UCI under April Heinrichs. Prior to joining the Anteater program, Juniper was an assistant coach for the UC Riverside men's soccer program for three seasons from 2003-05 and an assistant coach at the University of Bristol (England) from 1998 - 2002. Juniper earned his Bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Bristol (England) in 1998 and went on to receive his Master's in sport and exercise science from the University of Bath (England) in 2002. His Master's thesis investigated group dynamics of elite soccer. Juniper's research was published by the English F.A. Coaches Association Journal in 2003 and "The Sport Psychologist" in 2006. His research, which was based on work with collegiate soccer programs in the U.S. and professional soccer academies in England, highlighted key elements of effective teams. Coach Juniper has delivered presentations on building effective teams to a number of organizations. As a collegiate soccer player in England at the University of Bristol, Juniper was named both Freshman and Player of the Year in 1996 and was the leading scorer in 1996 and 1998. During that time, Juniper represented England Universities at the regional level. In 1995, he captained the Colchester Sixth Form College to a high school national title and in 2001 he was part of the National Championship winning team at the University of Bath. He also played for a number of semi-professional teams in England. Juniper holds the U.S. Soccer Federation "A" coaching license, UEFA "B" license, USSF National Youth License, NSCAA Goalkeeper license, and a Speed, Agility and Quickness trainer accreditation. He is also on the Cal South coach education staff, coaches with the Cal South and Region IV Olympic Development programs in addition to local clubs and community programs.
