UC Irvine started their run of WCC opponents travelling to USD on Friday. In a perfect copy of UCI’s game-winning goal against Oregon, Reema Bzeih whipped a corner kick into the box that would be headed home by Grayson Galbraith for the lead in the 16th minute. USD did save a PK to keep the match within reach, but the Anteaters defense allowed the Toreros just two shots and none on goal for its sixth shutout of the year.

UCI returned home Sunday to host Pepperdine, and again took the lead in the 16th minute as Noel Baham’s cross found Shelby Lee to head home the opening strike. Pepperdine would take advantage of penalty kick opportunities in the 22nd and 39th minutes to take a 2-1 lead into the half, and would hold the UCI attack down before adding to their total with goals in the 76th and 81st minute to complete a 4-1 victory for the Waves. SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS In the final week of non-conference play, the Anteaters face off with their fifth and sixth WCC opponents on the season beginning with a Thursday trip to Santa Clara. The Broncos have fought through a brutal schedule to a 3-5-1 mark. SCU has battled with five ranked opponents drawing with No. 23 Michigan while falling to No. 2 Stanford, No. 7 USC, No. 7 UCLA, and No. 24 Cal in addition to squaring off with perennial winning programs Notre Dame and Washington State. Neither Santa Clara nor its opponents have registered a shutout in any game this season either. The Broncos are coming off a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2016, and looking to maintain a spotless 13-0-1 mark all-time against the Anteaters including a 1-0 victory last year. Sophomore Maddy Gonzalez’s four goals pace the attack while Maria Sanchez (3 G, 3 A) and Julie Doyle (3 G) show up as formidable compliments. Courtney Ogren and Melissa Lowder have each seen considerable time in net with Lowder making six starts and stopping 28 shots. UCI comes back home Sunday to start off a doubleheader in which the men and women each host San Francisco. The Dons have had a wild ride to reach 3-4-2 this season. USF shutout a ranked Cal squad, but then handed UC Davis its only win of the season. Then after an 8-0 drubbing to No. 2 Stanford, came back with a draw vs. No. 14 Oklahoma State and win over Oklahoma. The Dons were seventh in the WCC last year, and the last meeting with UCI was 2010 when the ‘Eaters won, 2-0. Sonja Giraud runs the show with six of the team’s 10 goals. She and Samantha Jehnings each have put up at least 20 shots. The Anteaters are nine matches into their season, but its never too late to have firsts which the team experienced a lot over the weekend. Friday’s win at USD was the team’s first road win of the year while the Sunday result was UCI’s first home loss. That came in a match where UCI trailed at the half for the first time this year. It was also the first match UCI lost after scoring first. UCI drew with LMU after allowing the Lions to score first. One Anteater made their debut on Sunday as Elizabeth Rivera played in her first career match as a forward the final seven minutes. A few seconds happened following firsts, namely Grayson Galbraith and Shelby Lee each scoring their second goal of the season. The second Big West team beat a Pac-12 opponent last week joining the Anteaters who were the first when they dropped Oregon at home earlier. THROW-INS

Scott Juniper has been the women's soccer head coach at UC Irvine since January 2006. In nine seasons at the helm, Juniper put the Anteaters on the national map, leading the program to a historic 19-3-2 season and reaching NCAA Tournament for the first time in history in 2010 and returning for a second straight year in 2011 after a 16-win season. Coach Juniper has built the Anteater program into an annual contender that has taken out top-tier programs in the process such as Texas A&M, Auburn, Oregon State, Portland, and Long Beach State. He has led the program to winning seasons and Big West Tournament berths in six of his eight campaigns drawing Big West and NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year honors following the 2010 season. Juniper guided UCI to the Sweet Sixteen with victories over Arizona State and Wake Forest, before losing 1-0 in double overtime to the University of Washington at Anteater Stadium. The 2010 team also captured the Big West regular-season title with a record of 8-0-0, the first time that a team has ever been unbeaten and untied in Big West Conference play. The women's soccer team concluded the season ranked No. 14 in the nation and second in California (NSCAA). For his efforts, Juniper was recognized as the 2010 Big West Coach of the Year and NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year. The 2010 season saw four players named to the Big West first team and the Anteaters came away the majority of conference's awards. Danielle de Seriere was named the Big West Goalkeeper of the Year, Coco Goodson garnered Defender of the Year recognition and Tanya Taylor was voted the Offensive Player of the Year. UCI also had four all-region honorees, two of whom were also named All-Americans, three Academic All-Americans and the program's first ever Women's Professional Soccer league draft pick as Tanya Taylor was selected by the Boston Breakers. Following Taylor has been CoCo Goodson, a 2012 draft pick, who has built a solid professional career with Sky Blue FC along with Rachel Wood (Boston Breakers) and Cami Privett (Houston Dash) sending Anteaters to professional leagues in the Netherlands, Norway, and Iceland in the process. In 2009, Juniper's Anteaters reached the Big West Tournament going 12-7-2 overall and 4-3-1 in Big West play finishing in a tie for fourth place. In Juniper's first season, he led UCI to an 11-7-2 record overall and a 5-2-1 record in the Big West. That season the 'Eaters finished third in the Big West to qualify for the Big West Conference Tournament. In 2006, Juniper was hired as an assistant coach at UCI under April Heinrichs. Prior to joining the Anteater program, Juniper was an assistant coach for the UC Riverside men's soccer program for three seasons from 2003-05 and an assistant coach at the University of Bristol (England) from 1998 - 2002. Juniper earned his Bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Bristol (England) in 1998 and went on to receive his Master's in sport and exercise science from the University of Bath (England) in 2002. His Master's thesis investigated group dynamics of elite soccer. Juniper's research was published by the English F.A. Coaches Association Journal in 2003 and "The Sport Psychologist" in 2006. His research, which was based on work with collegiate soccer programs in the U.S. and professional soccer academies in England, highlighted key elements of effective teams. Coach Juniper has delivered presentations on building effective teams to a number of organizations. As a collegiate soccer player in England at the University of Bristol, Juniper was named both Freshman and Player of the Year in 1996 and was the leading scorer in 1996 and 1998. During that time, Juniper represented England Universities at the regional level. In 1995, he captained the Colchester Sixth Form College to a high school national title and in 2001 he was part of the National Championship winning team at the University of Bath. He also played for a number of semi-professional teams in England. Juniper holds the U.S. Soccer Federation "A" coaching license, UEFA "B" license, USSF National Youth License, NSCAA Goalkeeper license, and a Speed, Agility and Quickness trainer accreditation. He is also on the Cal South coach education staff, coaches with the Cal South and Region IV Olympic Development programs in addition to local clubs and community programs.
