TRACK & FIELD (GIRLS) – Owosso 68, Kearsley 69 - The KO clash between Owosso and
Flint Kearsley came down to a close finish in girls track. The event was tied 5 to 5 (with 1 tie) pending our results. When the final event finished, Owosso lost 68-69. Although we wanted to come away with a win, I am not at all upset about the way we competed tonight. We had many girls set PR's today. First year track athlete Katie Clevenger had a spectacular day. She was able to win all four events she competed in, including high jump (4'6"), 100m hurdles (19.59), 300m hurdles (52.56) and the 4x200m relay (1:55.83). Other Owosso athletes that won events included:
Mirranda Libbey - 1600m (6:09.96) and the 4x800m relay (11:26.2) along with teammates Maria Stuart, Brooke Helvie and Daisy York. The 4x100m relay team of Lexi Martenis, Molly Hart, Malyrie Montroy and Lauren Spicer (54.93). The 4x200m relay team of Katie Clevenger, Malyrie Montroy, Lexi Martenis and Kaitlyn Owens (1:55.83). Owosso 59, Waverly 78 - Owosso traveled to Waverly today to compete against the defending division II state champions. Although we had a pretty respectable showing, we came up short in the end with a 59-78 loss. When examining the results, it was truly a tale of two different teams. It is easy to split a track and field event into three different sections: field events, sprints and distance. When you break the meet down today, Owosso was able to come away with 31 of the 32 points from events where individuals ran 800 meters or further. However, in events that went 200m or less, Waverly won 36-1. Owosso managed to get a few points back in the long sprints though (300 hurdles, 400 and 4x400), winning 17-6 . The tie breaker came down to field events, which Waverly won 35-10. From what I have seen so far this season, Waverly has a better team than last year and will have a great opportunity to win another state championship. I wish you good luck Waverly! Individuals finishing in the top three for Owosso include: Kaitlyn Owens – 1st place in the 1600m run (6:44.22), 1st place in the 800m run (2:34.07) and 1st place in the 4x400m relay (4:36.29). Emma Smith – 1st place in the 400m dash (1:09.09), 2nd place in the high jump (4’10”) and 1st place in the 4x400m relay (4:36.29). Mirranda Libbey – 1st place in the 3200m run (14:03.59), 2nd in the 1600m run (6:44.35) and 2nd in the 800m run (2:46.82). Katie Clevenger – 1st place in the 300m hurdles (53.07), 3rd place in the 100m hurdles (19.56) and 1st place in the 4x400m relay (4:36.29). Malyrie Montroy – 2nd place in pole vault (6’6”). Allie Pumford – 2nd place in the 3200m run (15:55.36) and 1st place in the 4x800m run (12:25.84). Braelyn Hill – 3rd place in the 1600m run (7:10.7), 3rd place in the 3200m run (16:54.91) and 1st place in the 4x800m relay (12:25.84). Lauren Spicer – 3rd place in the high jump (4’6”) and 3rd place in the long jump (13’11”). Lexi Martenis – 3rd place in the pole vault (6’0”). Merissa Leftwich – 3rd in shot put (32’8”). Maddie Smith – 3rd place in the 400m dash (1:27.35). McKenna Sovis – 3rd place in the 300m hurdles (59.3). Maria Stuart – 1st place in the 4x400m dash (4:36.29) and 1st place in the 4x800m run (12:25.84). Brooke Helvie – 1st place in the 4x800m run (12:25.84). Great Job girls!
