Should your girlfriend also be your best buddy? Yes. That’s the person you’re going to spend the vast majority of your time with, and I feel like all healthy, fun relationships— particularly longterm—are based on a foundation of friendship. All the lust and mystery dissipates after a while, and what’s left is the friendship.
Where do you take a date when you want to impress her? If I want to do something really lovely for my girl, I’ll surprise her with a couple of days in Palm Springs. We order room service and have massages, sit in the sun, and drink a bunch of booze—just totally disconnect. There’s an energy and a pace to that place that feels otherworldly, like everything slows down.

When was the last time you were really scared? Genuinely, when all of that 50 Shades [of Grey] stuff went down. [Editor’s note: He accepted the role of Christian Grey but pulled out of the film two months later.] That really bothered me. I was going against everything I believed I was, and…I’ve just never been in a situation like that, where I’d bitten off more than I could chew. I was scared that it was going to make me feel really bad about myself. I was scared that there would be some negative repercussions for me.

What are you most insecure about? My social anxiety—I hate going to parties, I hate small talk, and I hate socializing with people I don’t know. I feel horribly awkward in those situations and get really nervous. If I have to go to a party, my whole day is ruined worrying about it.

What do you think when you look in the mirror? F--k, you’re getting old, son. But you still look good. [Laughs] —Clint Carter
