IT’S  IMPORTANT  TO  LEARN  THE  MOST   COMMON  MISTAKES  SO  YOU  CAN  AVOID   THEM  IN  THE  FUTURE.

THE  5  MOST  COMMON   MISTAKES  ARE…

1.  USING  DIGITAL  ZOOM.

WHEN  YOU  ZOOM  IN  YOU  ARE  RUINING  YOUR   PHOTO.     YOU  ARE  ONLY  DIGITALLY  CROPPING  YOUR  PHOTO   AND  DEGRADING  THE  QUALITY.   IF  YOU  MUST  CROP…  DON’T  ZOOM  IN!  CROP  LATER.

WHY?   -‐ -‐ -‐

Zooming  degrades  the  quality  of  your  photo.   Increases  graininess.   You  have  less  opPons  later  when  ediPng.  You  will  most  likely  decide  the   perfect  crop  later  and  you  limit  your  opPons  for  no  reason.

SOLUTION:   -‐  Use  your  feet  you  lazy  fool!     -‐  Get  closer  to  your  subject.  It  will  always  be  a  beUer  quality  if  you  don’t   use  your  digital  zoom.   -‐  OpPonal:  Get  an  aUachable  lens.  I  love  my  Moment  lenses.

2.  USING  A  FILTER  TO  TRY  TO   CORRECT  A  BAD  PHOTO.

DON’T  TRY  TO  SAVE  BAD  PHOTOS.  STOP  TRYING   TO  CORRECT  THEM  THEY  WILL  NEVER  BE  BETTER.     BAD  PHOTOS  NEED  TO  BE  THROWN  AWAY.     YOU  DON’T  WANT  A  BAD  PHOTO  BEING  THE   ONLY  VERSION  OF  A  STORY  THAT  YOU  ARE   TRYING  TO  CONVEY.

SOLUTION:   -‐

Learn  to  take  manual  control  of  your  image  creaPon  process.

-‐

You  need  to  learn  to  shoot  great  photos  from  the  start.

-‐

Envision  the  end  result  of  a  photograph  from  the  start.  Great  photos  are   thought  through.

-‐

Edit  to  recreate  the  emoVon  you  felt  while  shooPng  the  photo.

3.  OUT  OF  FOCUS   IMAGES

ONE  OF  THE  BIGGEST   MISTAKES  IPHONE   PHOTOGRAPHERS  MAKE  IS  TO   LET  YOUR  IPHONE   AUTOFOCUS…  ESPECIALLY  IN   LOW  LIGHT  SETTINGS.     BIG  MISTAKE…

SET  THE  FOCUS   MANUALLY.

SOLUTION:  How  to  set  your  focus  manually.   -‐

Press  on  the  screen  on  top  of  your  focal  point/  subject  to  focus  on  the   right.  Press  the  screen  and  hold  for  2  seconds  to  lock  the  focus.  Once   the  focus  is  locked  it  won’t  keep  autofocusing.

-‐

Most  photos  are  blurry  simply  because  of  autofocus.

-‐

TIP:  Find  a  sPll  subject  to  focus  on  and  then  lock  focus.  If  your  subject  is   moving,  find  another  subject  approximately  the  same  distance  away  from   you  and  lock  the  focus  on  that  “mock  subject”.  Then  you  can  recompose   your  shot  on  your  true  subject  without  having  to  worry  about  autofocus.

4.  UNDER  OR  OVER-‐EXPOSURE    (AUTO-‐EXPOSURE  PROBLEMS)

EXPOSURE  =  BRIGHTNESS WHEN  YOU  ALLOW  YOUR  IPHONE   CAMERA  TO  SIMPLY  AUTO-‐EXPOSE   (ADJUST  THE  BRIGHTNESS),  IT  IS  A   GUESSING  GAME  AS  TO  WHAT  THE   CAMERA  WILL  ADJUST  THE   EXPOSURE  FOR.

SET  THE  EXPOSURE   MANUALLY.

SOLUTION:  How  to  raise  or  lower  your   Exposure  manually.   -‐

Touch  the  screen  on  your  focal  point/  subject.   (A  best  pracPce  would  be  to  press  and  hold  to   lock  the  exposure  and  focus)

-‐

Slide  your  finger  up  or  down  to  brighten  or   darken  the  photo.

5.  NO  FOCAL  POINT

YOU  MAY  SEE  A  BEAUTIFUL  SCENE  WITH   CLOUDS  AND  WAVES  AND  YOU  THINK  IT   LOOKS  AWESOME.  BUT  AS  YOUR  EYE   SETTLES  ON  THE  PICTURE  YOU  REALIZE   THERE  IS  NO  ACTUAL  SUBJECT.  NO   FOCAL  POINT  FOR  YOUR  EYES  TO  REST.

ADD  A  FOCAL  POINT    (SUBJECT)

By  simply  introducing  something  for  the  eyes  to   catch  onto,  changes  the  whole  dynamic  of  an   image.   WaiPng  for  the  right  moment  when  this  bird  flew   by  gives  you  a  much  stronger  composiPon  and   much  beUer  overall  photo.

HAVE  FUN.
