The lumberjack Each issue of monocle can be traced back to the forests of southern Sweden. Lumberjacks, such as Dennis Olsson, chop timber for Arctic Paper Munkedals, a 146-year-old mill that turns the wood into fsc-certified uncoated paper, which it then ships to our printer in the UK. We appreciate the thoughtful touches that come from working with a small mill: every delivery is accompanied by a handwritten note.

5. People who have helped us
The photographers and illustrators There is a core of photographers who have defined our decade and we asked them to shoot a self-portrait. Felix Brüggemann (above) is based in Berlin, where he shot our early story on the Foreign Ministry; he also shot our recent story on the German news show Tagesschau. The first story that Felix Odell (above, right) shot for us was on furniture designer Carl Malmsten in 2009 – and since then he has covered 38 more. His favourite so far has been a report on Casablanca. Henning Bock (below, right) is based in Berlin and has shot more monocle covers than any other photographer. Kohei Take (below) lives in Tokyo and mentioned that he has shot 318 stories for us. His highlight? A wintery dip in an onsen that left him with frozen hair. And on the right you will see an illustration by Satoshi Hashimoto, the Tokyo illustrator whose humour and warmth have made monocle’s pages come to life.

The drivers This is Hannes Klotzner, who is the man with the wheels when the team are in the Dolomites. But whether it’s Mario in Milan or the man with the fastest Merc in Beirut, during the past decade we have come to rely on the skilled driving services of a fine team who ensure we get the stories and never miss a flight. Well, almost never.
The correspondents One of our original correspondents, Elna Nykänen Andersson has graced the pages of monocle for a decade. A true all-rounder, as Stockholm correspondent she has interviewed presidents, profiled up-and-coming entrepreneurs and written with passion and verve about design, architecture, food and travel. (And as we discovered at one Christmas party, she is also a great pianist.) Swedish readers will also recognise her from their television screens: most mornings she can be seen reading the news on svt. Since her arrival we have grown our correspondent network to more than 30 cities, from where they deliver unique stories for print and radio every day.

The models Many attractive men and women have appeared in our fashion shoots but Yusuke Hirayama is special. He has been appearing on our pages since issue one and his look has helped us carve out a space that is about longevity, not fads.

The hosts It didn’t take long for Hardy’s, a brasserie across the road from Midori House, to become the unofficial monocle bar. It’s been the venue of emotional farewells for long-serving staff, hearty lunches with correspondents and nights of “just the one Aperol spritz” after work that end in the small hours. The reason for Hardy’s success is its owner, Dominique de Bastarrechea, and her sense of style, attention to detail and community spirit. While we have other favourite bars and restaurant spots from Bangkok to Milan, Toronto to Tokyo, Dominique is the host who knows us best.
The interns We have a short, sharp internship programme, which means that we get to meet a lot of people every year who are starting out on their careers. But a good intern is more than just someone who is here to learn: they have a lot to tell us too. And a lot of interns have stayed with us as full-timers. Chiara Rimella, Marie-Sophie Schwarzer, Matt Alagiah, Josh Fehnert, Mikaela Aitken, Jamie Waters: they are all vital names in our company and all started out as interns. So a big thank you to some recent and current interns, many of whom now have great careers with other companies. Here’s to: top floor (l-r): Eugénie Derez, Ilana Hanukov, Eugenia Ellanskaya, Judit Serra Casas, Natasha Celine Gresh, Helena Jerreat, Kate Bullivant, Alexis Sogl, Claire Lancaster and Gal Barnea. Lower floor, back row (l-r): Mike Huynh, Mariya Grinina, Hyuna Lee, Maria Khan, Erin Duffy and Maria Hamer. Lower floor, front row (l-r): Ximena Miñan Vega, Marianna Giusti, Ilse Viveros and Naomi Joseph.
The distributors Good distributors don’t just dump issues on newsstands but have a detailed plan of action and promotion. Commercial and logistics director Valentina Martinetti is behind the plan that gets monocle on focused edicole around Italy (as well as bookshops, restaurants, museums, airports and stations too). Her group, ips-owned Messinter, is the nation’s leader and brings publications from all over the world to about 8,500 newsstands.

The newsstands You can make the best magazine in the world but it will only be a success if you can get it on to a newsstand run by people who love the business. So we salute these impeccable media stars. The readers monocle readers are extraordinary. The support, loyalty and encouragement we have received across the past decade is incredible, with many subscribers being with us since day one. Here’s to four of the best. Brigitte Rethier (top) was born in Ottawa, lives in Frankfurt and has been a subscriber since 2007. Mark Carter (centre, left) is based in Bangkok, where he runs his own design studio and has been to numerous events. He says that monocle has inspired his business for the past decade. Joanne Wilson (centre, right) is another longterm subscriber who also likes our books, and is based in New York. And finally Ricky Elizabeth (bottom) is a London subscriber who has been a great promoter of all we do and is a friendly face at every event.

Monocle 24 voices Our radio hosts and contributors are chosen because they are experts in their field; they are given space and time to explain their views. Many have become regulars, such as Shashank Joshi, Robert Fox and Karen Krizanovich. We’ve also been blessed with fantastic presenters, including Andrew Mueller and Georgina Godwin, whose incisive questions continue to bring the best out of our guests.
