Dear Parents, Welcome back! On behalf of our staff team we hope that you have had a great holiday and summer break with family and friends. It was so lovely to see all the children running into the playground on Wednesday with big smiles – we did notice one or two parent’s running back out with big smiles too! Everyone looked really smart in their uniform and that has set the standard for the year! We look forward to welcoming all the children in Squirrel class on Monday as they take the very first step on their journey through primary school. We also welcome the following children and their families who are new to our school: Madison Cookman, Ellie Southern, Gracie Sherwin, Christopher, Elizabeth and Ethan Moroney, Hakan Cil, Elisha Cardew-Owen, Rhys Owen, Calum Lee, Olivia and Charlotte Scrafton, Harrison Mockford, Supriya Ale, Calan Lewis and Sarah Webb. In addition to new children, we also welcome new staff to our team. A very warm welcome goes to the following staff: Mr Wilkinson who is teaching in Year 2, Miss Pettit who joins us teaching in Year 3, Mr Walkey who will be teaching PE throughout the school on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon and also Ms Phillips who is joining us as a Mobility Learning Mentor however, sadly she will only be at RAF Benson until the half term as her family is relocating to Bristol at short notice. We shall be looking for someone to take over this role; however in the meantime our children and families will be benefiting from her support. I am sure that you will welcome these new staff to our community as you see them around school. In addition to the above, due to a posting to Cornwall, we will sadly be seeing Mrs Vance leave our team just before October half term. Mrs Vance started working with us in September 2008 as the Assistant Cook in the school kitchen and after training for her Teaching Assistant qualification and being successful in interview has done an amazing job in supporting learning with our children. We shall be making a collection to thank Mrs Vance for all of her hard work th and should you wish to contribute, please send an envelope with your donation to the school office by Monday 29 September. Finally, we are very pleased to announce that we have another RAF Benson baby on the way! Mrs Redhead is expecting her second baby and will be starting her maternity leave after Christmas. I am sure you will join me in congratulating Mrs Redhead and her family on this exciting news. I would like to draw your attention to the following: th
1. Welcome Back Meeting Monday 8 September at 5.30pm – everyone is welcome to this meeting to hear about our expectations, new initiatives and where we are sharpening our focus to improve outcomes for your children. Teachers have also prepared presentations to tell you about the exciting things coming up in their class this year. These sessions will be run twice to accommodate parents with more than one child at our school. We will be running a crèche during this time to allowing parents to focus on the information. 2. Parent Governor Vacancies – We have three vacancies at this current time and we ask those who are interested to be nominated for the post. Please do read the criteria in the pack so that if you wish to be nominated you are completely familiar with what the role of a parent governor entails. It is a really rewarding role and should you wish to know more, please do not hesitate to ask. Finally, I am so pleased that yesterday we had two children who visited my office for a Headteacher sticker because they had impressed their teacher so much during the day with their hard work and great learning attitude that they found themselves on Outstanding on the Behaviour for learning ladder in their classroom! Well done to Sam Baker and Leo Allinson! A fabulous start to the year! We hope you have a really lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you back in school on Monday.

If your child is leaving and visiting their new school, parents are required to submit a letter to the school office in advance. As from 1 September 2013 it has become law that NO holiday in term time will be considered as authorised absence in any school. Following discussions with the School Governors, exceptional circumstances for RAF Benson Primary School for the year 2013 – 2014 will include: Lengthy deployment (4 months or more including covering the whole of the summer holiday). Proof of deployment will be required and will be verified with BSW. Serious family emergency. Visiting a school on notification of being posted. Other educational activity e.g. attending a dance exam, attending graduation ceremony of parent. 1 day per academic year for travelling to a family event that is a significant distance away. An ‘Application for Authorised Absence’ form needs to be completed. The form can be obtained from the school office. The completed form must be given to the school office at least 14 days before the date of absence. A brief meeting will be arranged for parents with Mrs Fawdry. Leavers If your child is leaving RAF Benson Community Primary School, please inform the school office as soon as possible by completing a leaver’s form. It is extremely important for us to know when your child is likely to be leaving when we are planning school trips, activities and class lists. Local Event There is a Hot Air Balloon Festival for a charity supported by St. Mary’s Church Cholsey on Saturday 6 September. There will be a BBQ and drinks (on the village playing fields) at 5.00 pm. The forecast is fine! Ten hot air balloons will fly out and other balloons will be tethered. The event is free although donations are welcome. People are welcome to come along to watch the take-off. There will be a Helium balloon race for children.
