What do you do at Severn School? I teach 8th grade history, coach Middle School girls lacrosse, encourage service related opportunities in the Middle School, and am the Middle School history department chair.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

It's the people who draw me to Severn. I like the opportunities to interact with students outside of class, particularly doing service-related activities and sports.

What other jobs have you had? I've worked at a variety of experiential and outdoor schools, taught art history at the university level, and ran the museum education outreach program at the Portland Art Museum in Oregon.

When you're not working, what do you like to do? I really like snowboarding, climbing, hiking, and the beach.

What special recognition have you received while with Severn? In her oh-so-humble way, Leslie refrained from answering this question. She has been recognized with the Faculty Appreciation Award in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015. The award is given to the Middle School faculty member who through outstanding involvement, leadership, friendship and moral support, best embodies the spirit

Who had the greatest influence on your career? I'm not so sure that it's a who, I think it's more of a where... I studied abroad at age 15 in Denmark, did a semester in Italy during college, and lived in India for a while.

What's the best advice you’ve been given? Don’t stay still. Leslie started with Severn in 2008 and quickly became an indispensible member of the faculty. She left Severn School after her sophomore year to graduate from Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. Leslie went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in art and art history from Skidmore College in Saratoga, NY, and then earned a master’s in art history from the University of Oregon. The Tuner family has deep Severn roots. Leslie’s brother Kip Turner ‘03 is a world class lacrosse goalie. Brother John Turner taught in the Middle School from 1994 to 2010, and brother Greg is a member of Severn ’s Class of 2000. Parents Leigh and Ellen were greatly involved with the school. Leslie and her husband Chris have three children: Merrick ’26, Raina ’29 and Brigitta.
