Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. INTRODUCTION: The importance of one’s last words is clearly established. How much more so those of Christ.
1. WORDS OF COMPASSION Explanation: while He would have had every “human” right to verbally retaliate against His attackers, Christ’s words were quite the opposite. It was His love that sent Him to the cross (Rom. 5:8), and it was His love that came from His mouth in His final hours.
Love forgives the guilty Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
Love frees the condemned Luke 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
Love faithfully cares for others John 19:26-27 (26) When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! (27) Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
Illustration: Application: Love is selfless to the end! Love is not vindictive or vindicating. Love releases! Love delivers! Transition: Not only were His last words driven by His love for sinners, but they were also 2

2. WORDS OF CONTRITION Explanation: Not in the sense of repentance or regret as the word is often used, but in the sense of humiliation, suffering, and brokenness. Christ’s Words of contrition drive home the reality of His suffering, though God in the flesh. His suffering was real. 1 Corinthians 11:24 “…Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you…”
His suffering was real John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Application: He knows your suffering. He was not exempt from the pain simply because He was God. He knows what you are going through and can give you the grace to go through it.
His separation was real Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Application: God can identify with your being abandoned, rejection, loneliness. No matter what you have gone through, you can’t say that Christ has ever turned His back on you! But He did turn His back on Christ! Romans 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Application: You can trust the One who was willing to suffer so much and be separated from God, for you!
TRANSITION: HIS FINAL WORDS WERE WORDS OF COMPASSION AND CONTRITION, BUT ALSO OF COMPLETION. 6

3. WORDS OF COMPLETION John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. Explanation: Christ came to fulfill the prophecies of the ages. This too was on His mind as He took His last breath.
You can trust Him with your salvation o It is finished! (John 19:30) o There is nothing left for you to do, but embrace by faith what He has already done!
You can trust Him with your translation o Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. o “commend” means to deposit. Your soul is safe with Him!
Application:
I am trusting His promise not my performance I am trusting His preservation not my perseverance I am trusting in His peace not my power
CONCLUSION:
He loves you He was broken for you He accomplished it all for you
