Stepping off the stage In your daytime dreams, you can play the role of happy or sad, rich or poor, whole or sick, powerless or weak, yet in truth, you are as God created you; infinite spirit, safe, loved, healed, happy, and whole, and you cannot be anything else. God is the Cause and Creator and you are the effect of the Cause. You will not remember the truth of who you are until you release from the roles you have made up for yourself and others. I like to think of life (in the your daytime dreams) as one where everyone is reading from a script that you wrote for them. You are the writer, producer, director, casting agent, and starring role. You are even in charge of the sound effects. Being your clever and creative self, you created a stage in your life filled with people to act out what you believe to be true in the place of truth. The people you chose to play their roles are so convincing in the roles they play, that you actually forgot that you chose them and the roles they play are not real. In A Course in Miracles, this stage of life is called “the dream” and the roles people are acting out on your stage are called “dream roles”. If you would like to release from pain, lack, sickness, loneliness, and despair, then you will need to step off the stage. In Chapter 29, it says, “Do you believe that truth can be but some illusions? They are dreams because they are not true. the dream, but only on awaking. Could it be some dreams are kept, and others wakened from? The choice is not between which dreams to keep, but only if you want to live in dreams or to awaken from them. Thus it is the miracle does not select some dreams to leave untouched by its beneficence. You cannot dream some dreams and wake from some, for you are either sleeping or awake. And dreaming goes with only one of these.” ACIM Ch.29.IV.1 Positive dreams vs. Negative dreams On the stage of life (i.e., your daytime dreams), you tend to cherish the happy dreams and avoid the painful ones. This stage was designed by your ego to keep you engaged with a combination of both positive and negative experiences, so you will not question the dream or remember the truth of who you are. In fact, your positive dreams will delay your awakening just as much as your negative dreams, because they are more deeply cherished. In Chapter 29, it says, “The dreams you think you like would hold you back as much as those in which the fear is seen. For every dream is but a dream of fear, no matter what the form it seems to take. The fear is seen within, without, or both. Or it can be disguised in pleasant form. But never is it absent from the dream, for fear is the material of dreams, from which they all are made… The thin disguise of pleasure and of joy in which they may be wrapped but slightly veils the heavy lump of fear that is their core.” ACIM Ch.29.IV.2, 3.4 Trouble on the stage While on the stage of your daytime dreams, you forget that other people are playing the roles you assigned to them before, and you get angry when they fail to do what you think they should be doing now. In your mind, you believe that this justifies your attack and judgment. In Chapter 29, it says, “When you are angry, is it not because someone has failed to fill the function you allotted him? And does not this become the "reason" your attack is justified?” ACIM Ch.29.IV.4.1-2
You remain happy and pleased when people on your stage are acting out the roles you think they should, yet if they fail, then you are sad. All the while, they are playing out the dream roles you assigned to them at the beginning (at least until you change your mind or assign them another role). The stage will not reflect a lasting happy dream until you realize that you have been the script writer all along, and you abandon your need to assign roles. You can accomplish this by following the guidance of your Teacher of Peace and choosing to see the truth of yourself and others, in the place of the roles you have assigned. In Chapter 29, it says, “The dreams you think you like are those in which the functions you have given have been filled; the needs which you ascribe to you are met. It does not matter if they be fulfilled or merely wanted. It is the idea that they exist from which the fears arise. Dreams are not wanted more or less. They are desired or not. represent, and should achieve for you. If it succeeds you think you like the dream. If it should fail you think the dream is sad. But whether it succeeds or fails is not its core, but just the flimsy covering.” ACIM Ch.29.IV.4 Dreams will not become happy until you step off the stage If you desire lasting happiness, abundance, and peace, then you must realize that the stage, as designed by your ego, is not intended to fulfill that purpose. Its purpose is distraction and to keep you so preoccupied with the happy and sad scenes on the stage, that you will never question the dream or remember who you are. Lasting happiness and peace are not your ego’s goal. Its goal is to lead you away from happiness, but not so far that you give up trying to get there. Once you relinquish your role as the “dream maker” and you have no interest in assigning roles, the Holy Spirit, your Teacher of Peace, will guide you back to the happiness, peace, and abundance that you abandoned when you “Edged God Out” (ego) and took on the role of creator. While you are in the waking up process, your nightmares will be replaced by gentle happy dreams offered by the Holy Spirit. The figures in your dream will shift from those that attack to those that you can help, and your dreams of sadness will turn into dreams of joy. Your dreams of joy will lead to your awakening. In Chapter 29, it says, “How happy would your dreams become if you were not the one who gave the "proper" role to every figure which the dream contains. No one can fail but your idea of him, and there is no betrayal but of this. The core of dreams the Holy Spirit gives is never one of fear. The coverings may not appear to change, but what they mean has changed because they cover something else. Perceptions are determined by their purpose, in that they seem to be what they are for. A shadow figure who attacks becomes a brother giving you a chance to help, if this becomes the function of the dream. And dreams of sadness thus are turned to joy.” ACIM Ch.29.IV.5
What is your brother for? (read carefully) The Course teaches that you do not know what your brother’s real function is because you have assigned another role for him to play. The Holy Spirit is shining within each and every person, and you will not know your True Self until you are willing to see the light of the Holy Spirit in every person (in the place of the roles you assigned to them). You do not see Him now because your decision to love others is based on whether or not they are fulfilling the roles you have assigned to them. If they do not fulfill the role(s) you assigned, you withhold your love, judge them as guilty or flawed, and withhold your willingness to see them differently. This is a BIG WIN for your ego and results in a further delay of your happiness. In Chapter 29, it says, “What is your brother for? You do not know, because your function is obscure to you. Do not ascribe a role to him that you imagine would bring happiness to you. And do not try to hurt him when he fails to take the part that you assigned to him, in what you dream your life was meant to be. help to give him if you see the function of the dream as He (Holy Spirit) perceives its function, Who can utilize all dreams as means to serve the function given Him. Because He loves the dreamer, not the dream, each dream becomes an offering of love. For at its center is His Love for you, which lights whatever form it takes with love.” ACIM Ch.29.IV.6 You will see the Holy Spirit through your brothers – or not “The Holy Spirit is invisible, but you can see the results of His Presence, and through them (your brothers) you will learn that He is there.” ACIM Ch.12.VII.3.1 You see what you expect, and you expect what you invite “You see what you expect, and you expect what you invite. Your perception is the result of your invitation, coming to you as you sent for it. Whose manifestations would you see? Of whose presence would you be convinced? (Holy Spirit or ego) For you will believe in what you manifest, and as you look out so will you see in. Two ways of looking at the world are in your mind, and your perception will reflect the guidance you have chosen.” ACIM Ch.12.VII.5 When you see me (Christ), it will be because you have invited Him (Holy Spirit) By now, you might be realizing the significance of your willingness to see only the light and truth of each and every person, in the place of roles you assigned to them. Through your willingness to see the light and truth of who they really are, being the Holy Spirit, you will see the Face of Christ unveiled before you and within you. The ego does not find love because that is not what it seeks Your ego will never guide you to love and happiness because that is not what it seeks, and if you try to follow both the Holy Spirit and your ego, you will recognize neither because their goals are opposed. The Holy Spirit’s goal is to lead you to happiness and your ego’s goal is to lead you to pain, loss, and disappointment. With your willingness to see the light and truth in each person (i.e., the Holy Spirit), you are choosing to follow Him and this will lead you back to the happiness that God wills for you. If you would leave even one person behind, then you are declaring your loyalty to your ego, and your Teacher of Peace must wait to wake you up until you change your mind. You will see what you seek “I (Christ) am the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, and when you see me it will be because you have invited Him (Holy Spirit). For He (Holy Spirit) will send you His witnesses (your brothers) if you will but look upon them. Remember always that you see what you seek, for what you seek you will find. The ego finds what it seeks, and only that. It does not find love, for that is not what it is seeking. Yet seeking and finding are the same, and if you seek for two goals you will find them, but you will recognize neither. You will think they are the same because you want both of them. When you project what you do not want, it is because you still want it “I said before that what you project or extend is up to you, but you must do one or the other, for that is a law of mind, and you must look in before you look out. As you look in, you choose the guide for seeing. And then you look out and behold his witnesses. This is why you find what you seek. What you want in yourself you will make manifest, and you will accept it from the world because you put it there by wanting it. When you think you are projecting what you do not want, it is still because you do want it. This leads directly to dissociation, for it represents the acceptance of two goals, each perceived in a different place; separated from each other because you made them different. The mind then sees a divided world outside itself, but not within. This gives it an illusion of integrity, and enables it to believe that it is pursuing one goal. Yet as long as you perceive the world as split, you are not healed. For to be healed is to pursue one goal, because you have accepted only one and want but one.” ACIM Ch.12.VII.7 When you want only love, you will see nothing else “When you want only love you will see nothing else. The contradictory nature of the witnesses you perceive is merely the reflection of your conflicting invitations. You have looked upon your mind and accepted opposition there, having sought it there. But do not then believe that the witnesses for opposition are true, for they attest only to your decision about reality, returning to you the messages you gave them. Love, too, is recognized by its messengers. If you make love manifest, its messengers will come to you because you invited them.” ACIM Ch.12.VII.8
The power of decision is your one remaining freedom as a prisoner of this world The power of decision is your one remaining freedom as a prisoner of this world. You can decide to see it right. What you made of it is not its reality, for its reality is only what you give it. You cannot really give anything but love to anyone or anything, nor can you really receive anything but love from them. If you think you have received anything else, it is because you have looked within and thought you saw the power to give something else within yourself. It was only this decision that determined what you found, for it was the decision for what you sought.” ACIM Ch.12.VII.9
Through the eyes of Christ, only the real world exists “When you have accepted your mission to extend peace you will find peace, for by making it manifest you will see it. Its holy witnesses will surround you because you called upon them, and they will come to you. I have heard your call and I have answered it, but you will not look upon me nor hear the answer that you sought. That is because you do not yet want only that. Yet as I become more real to you, you will learn that you do want only that. And you will see me as you look within, and we will look upon the real world together. Through the eyes of Christ, only the real world exists and only the real world can be seen. As you decide so will you see. And all that you see but witnesses to your decision.” ACIM Ch.12.VII.11 Today, we join together in freeing our brothers from all the roles we have assigned to them. We choose to lay down our scripts, step off the stage, and see only the light and truth within each one of them, such that we will recognize the Vision of Christ within us; our True Self.
