25 Years...
and Counting!
T
he Chamber’s very first celebration of small business took place on May 14, 1987. It was held at the Constitution Convention Center at 5th and Minnesota in Kansas City, Kansas, and the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event was Kay Waldo, then president of Kay Waldo and Associates, Inc. (The former mayor provided consulting services in the area of human resource development.) The luncheon was called a “Salute to Small Business” and was the brainchild of The Chamber’s Small Business Council. Council members wanted to shine the spotlight on small business — which they described as the “engine” of the regional economy — and they wanted to honor the locally-owned and managed small business that best typified the spirit of entrepreneurship in Greater Kansas City. The Small Business of the Year Award went to NKHW and Blankenship Distributors in 1987. And a Chamber tradition was born. A lot has changed since 1987, but the basic premise has not: to celebrate the important role of small business and entrepreneurship in our region. The criteria set to determine the Small Business of the Year are essentially the same now as they were 25 years ago: • Growth of the business; • A history of good employee relations; and • Service to the community.
4 • 25th Anniversary Small Business Celebration
The size of the celebration has certainly changed: what started as a oneday luncheon has now morphed into an annual series of events held over the course of three months, beginning with the Candidates’ Showcase at the March Business After Hours, followed by the Small Business Celebration Breakfast, private receptions and get-togethers, and culminating in May with the announcement of the Small Business of the Year. The competition has certainly grown as well. That first year, only a handful of companies were nominated for the Small Business of the Year Award. This year, there were more than 1,500 nominations! In 1994, The Chamber unveiled its new “Mr. K Award” for the Small Business of the Year, honoring the late Ewing M. Kauffman, founder of Marion Laboratories and one of Kansas City’s most storied entrepreneurs. Kauffman had passed away the previous year. At the time, then-Chamber Chair Tom McDonnell (DST) said, “Ewing Kauffman blessed Kansas City with his entrepreneurial largess … and epitomized the criteria we use to determine our Small Business of the Year.” It’s been called the “Mr. K Award” ever since. Engraved on the back of the trophy is this inscription: “This award is named for Ewing M. Kauffman, an entrepreneur who started his own pharmaceutical company, introduced the championship Royals Major League Baseball team to Kansas City and founded one of the nation’s most innovative philanthropies … Mr. Kauffman attributed the success of these enterprises to leadership principles and philosophies that guided his professional relationships: first, that those who produce should share in the rewards; second, that we should treat others as we wish to be treated; and third, that we should give back to the community.”
Kauffman Foundation of Entrepreneurship
Ewing Kauffman started Marion Laboratories in the basement of his Kansas City home, and nurtured his small company and its employees to grow and be competitive on a global scale.
The Life & Legacy of
E
wing Marion Kauffman was born on a farm in Garden City, Missouri, in 1916. His family moved to Kansas City when he was a boy, and he called Kansas City home for the rest of his life. Following his service in the Navy during World War II, Ewing Kauffman began working as a salesman for a pharmaceutical company. In 1950, his innately entrepreneurial spirit led him to start his own pharmaceutical company in the basement of his home. He named his company Marion Laboratories Inc., using his middle name rather than his last name so his customers wouldn’t think he was running a one-man operation. In his first year in business, he had sales of $36,000 and a net profit of $1,000. When he sold his company to Merrell Dow in 1989, it had grown to become a global diversified health care giant with nearly $1 billion in sales and employing 3,400 associates.

Mr. K
Mr. Kauffman brought more to Kansas City than an international business. By establishing the Kansas City Royals in 1968, he brought major league baseball back to his hometown, boosting civic pride and the city’s economy. He made the Royals a model sports franchise and built a spectacular stadium that the team named in his honor near the end of his life. With Mr. K as the team’s owner, the Royals developed young players who won six division titles, two American League pennants, and a World Series championship in 1985. Ewing Kauffman’s most enduring legacy to his community and the world is the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. He established the Foundation with the same sense of opportunity he brought to his business endeavors, and, with the same convictions. Kauffman wanted his foundation to be innovative — to dig deep and get at the roots of issues to fundamentally change outcomes in people’s lives. He
wanted to help young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, get a quality education that would enable them to reach their full potential. He saw building enterprise as one of the most effective ways to realize individual promise and spur the economy. Ewing Kauffman lived life with a daring desire to shape the future and make others’ lives better. He remains a beloved figure, remembered for all that he brought to Kansas City and the nation, and for all that he gave. Today the mission of the Kauffman Foundation is guided by Ewing Kauffman’s belief that the American way of life thrives when our entrepreneurial spirit is unleashed. The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce is proud to present the Mr. K Award each year to an outstanding small business that exemplifies the personal and professional philosophies of Ewing Kauffman.

What impact did winning the Award have on your business? It gave us tremendous credibility in the market and infused us with a confidence in not only our abilities but of our business model. The recognition and energy was a tremendous uplift and to this day the momentum is still felt in our organization and by our executive management team.

What impact did winning the Award have on your business? It was great PR, of course, but most importantly our organization was very proud of our achievement.
What makes Kansas City a great place to start and grow a business? If you open a well-conceived business that operates well and serves a customer need, you don’t have to fight for attention. There are enough new ventures to make KC a vibrant place, but not so many that a good business can get lost.
What advice would you share with other small business owners? Have confidence in what you know, but know what you don’t know. It’s a fine line. Be humble enough to be vigilant about learning new things.

Do you have a memory to share from your time participating in the Small Business Celebration? I remember feeling stunned when they called our name. The firms we were competing against that year were phenomenal, well-known and very successful. I think for many we came out of nowhere. It’s a real tribute to what The Chamber has done through this Award’s program. They really bring recognition to otherwise unknown or publicized businesses.
What advice would you share with other small businesses? Remain diversified in the clients/markets you serve. Our firm was established during the recession of 1974, and endured the recessions of the ‘80s, ‘90s and the beginning of 2000s; what got us through that time and what is getting us through now is our diverse portfolio. If business from one area slows, we can rely on our work in other areas to keep us thriving.
What makes Kansas City a great place to start and grow a business? Kansas City offers a strong environment for entrepreneurs; not only through the support provided by a host of local organization/foundations, but also because the cost of living and cost of doing business is so low compared to the national average.

Do you have a memory to share from your time participating in the Small Business Celebration? I recall sitting next to a Top 10 tech guy whose business had grown dramatically. What impact did winning the Award have on your business? It reaffirmed to us that we were making good business decisions and developing programs that would enable us to scale and grow our operations. Small Business of the Year, 2004 Rick Krska, CEO • Year Established – 1992
What impact did winning the Award have on your business? Without question, the honor of being recognized by The Chamber’s Award has brought increased local interest in our business activities. Recognition of this type brings new interest in your company ranging from potential investors to media to new customers to suppliers… it really impacts every bit of your business.
What advice would you give to other small business owners? In today’s world, where most products and even services are viewed as commodities, the best way to differentiate yourself is still the same – treat people the way you want to be treated. If you do, you probably won’t have much competition.
What makes Kansas City a great place to start and grow a business? I can’t imagine a better place to have started the company than in Kansas City. There is such a sense of entrepreneurial spirit that translates into opportunities for new small businesses to be mentored and supported by other local companies and entrepreneurial organizations.

Small Business of the Year, 2006 Mitch Hoefer, Principal • Year Established – 1996
What impact did winning the Award have on your business? Winning the Award in 2006 was a significant benchmark and fantastic validation of our efforts. It showed us that we were in a fantastic position for the next 10 years and beyond. The support The Chamber gave us helped us gain recognition for the work we had been doing and showcased our work to potential clients.
Do you have a memory to share from your time participating in the Small Business Celebration? “It’s a Jungle Out There” was the theme of our entry, and that seems even more appropriate today. The whole staff took part in turning our office into a jungle with vines, stuffed animals and pith helmets. Even our clients got in the act. It was a blast.
What advice would you share with other small business owners?

Focus on your employees, your culture and your personal relationships with your clients and community. The business growth will follow.

Small Business of the Year, 2007 Phillip Short, CEO Year Established – 2000
What impact did winning the Award have on your business? When we first won the award it was great because we could use it to hire people from outside of K.C. It also was used to promote growth in the company and used to celebrate our success all of the time. The award was the first thing you saw when you walked into the company every day.
Do you have a memory to share from your time participating in the Small Business Celebration? Yes, I told our company that if the judges actually vote based on the four criteria that they provided in the beginning, that there was no way we could lose. Thanks a million for making that happen. You are all the best!
What makes Kansas City a great place to start and grow a business? Midwest values. Be honest and sincere, try and help others including all your associates and vendors. K.C. is a place where you can do that. I am not suggesting that it can’t be done anywhere, but we are known for our midwest values, and it helps tremendously.

Since winning the Award – we have experienced profound growth. Undoubtedly, the exposure and attention we received by winning this Award has played a significant role in that growth. This Award provided us with the confidence that we could grow our company without changing our commitment to excellence – another lesson learned from Mr. K!

Greater Kansas City Chamber of CommerCe Tucker Trotter, Dimensional Innovations Aaron Zack, Sunlighten Photo by Bruce Mathews
When Sunlight Met A New Dimension Small business is widely recognized as the driving force behind the local economy, also representing 90 percent of Chamber membership. As participants in The Chamber’s Small Business Celebration, Aaron Zack of Sunlighten® and Tucker Trotter of Dimensional Innovations made a top notch connection as two of The Chamber’s Top 10 Small Businesses in 2008. Both Aaron and Tucker were looking to share new ideas on how to stay in step with the constant changes occurring in their respective industries. Soon after their initial meeting, Sunlighten contacted Dimensional Innovations to construct the company sign that now lives outside Sunlighten’s newly renovated office. “We established a friendship; now we meet monthly to talk about business. It’s great to have a friend who I can be open with,” said Aaron. In their regular meetings, the pair discuss new business developments and troubleshoot critical issues facing small business entrepreneurs. “It’s always great to get an outsider’s perspective on things and to have someone you can bounce your ideas off of,” added Tucker.
