Texas Baptist Missions

Meeting the Mission Needs of Texas

Texas is a big state. Its population is growing.

The Texas Baptist Missions Foundation works with individuals and families who want to use their financial resources to help answer the growing mission needs in Texas. Although the Cooperative Program is a vital resource for Texas Baptists, the mission needs of Texas are so great that your help is needed. By working with the Foundation, you can supplement the Cooperative Program or target specific ministries of the BGCT and its churches.

The Foundation partners with donors to develop and support creative and innovative ministries. One hundred percent of every gift goes toward the donor’s chosen project, and the impact of the gift is maximized by the existing resources and expertise of the BGCT.

What it funds CHURCH STARTS The convention plans to facilitate 300 new church starts each year. Since 2000, the BGCT has helped begin over 1,500 new churches among 21 different ethnic groups. The average BGCT contribution needed for a new church start is $20,000, but there are many locations in Texas where a contribution of just $1,500 can start a new church. BORDER/MEXICO MINISTRY The millions of people living along both sides of the Rio Grande have a unique set of needs. There is the need to care for the children in six childcare homes on the border, and there are tremendous opportunities for discipleship training and pastor and lay leader training if materials can be provided. Public health needs–good drinking water, dental hygiene, nutritious food–are all important concerns that need funding in order to support the evangelistic emphases central to this ministry. DISASTER RELIEF In the event of a natural disaster, Texas Baptists are ready to respond immediately to any location in the world. Recently, more than 2000 volunteers have done exactly that, distributing food and water, repairing and building homes and churches and helping others in need. And the Texas Baptist Men provide immediate relief and training in places as diverse as Brazil, Mexico and South Africa. Texas Baptists need to be ready to respond to any disaster at any time, especially because of the unique mission opportunity disaster relief provides. BAPTIST STUDENT MINISTRY Many Texas university Baptist Student Ministry buildings need to be updated or replaced. Newer or remodeled BSM buildings enable Baptist students to reach more students, while providing tomorrow’s Baptist leaders a place to congregate with fellow believers. BSM also needs support to develop new programs and send students on summer and semester missions. OTHER INNOVATIVE MINISTRIES The Foundation partners with many new ministries that promise to introduce people to Christ throughout our state. Cowboy churches are reaching and baptizing people involved in the Western Heritage movement in record numbers, and more of these churches need to be started. With 25% of Texans living in multifamily housing, ministry in apartments is vital to reaching the lost, and dedicated chaplains are needed for this task. Small churches need help with programs to reach and disciple their teenagers, and Foundation funding helps some of these churches hire part-time college students to help with youth ministry. And hunger is an ever-growing problem, but there are many organizations that can help if resources can be found.
